Rotary Cutter Injury Protection
 

A little over a year ago, I cut a nice slice into the end of my index finger with my rotary cutter. I went to the doctor for stitches, which he told me weren't going to help. He gave me a tentanus shot, sent me home with a bandage, and told me I would have been better off if I had cut the flesh completely off. It took forever to heal and I have a really nice scar for my efforts. I admonished myself and vowed to be more careful. Well, that didn't work. I sliced the end of my OTHER index finger completely off yesterday.

So as I sit here with my finger pounding away in pain, I'm wondering if I can buy chain-mail gloves to protect myself in the future. What do other folks do? Obviously "being very careful" didn't work out for me so I need to so something else.

Fon's and Porter sell a glove for that purpose, I have never used it but have heard it is good. After reading what you did I think I will buy some as I am always doing things like that to myself.

OOOOH! OUCH! I am SO sorry that happened! No solutions for you except that there are some sort of "almost" chain-mail gloves out there, but I don't know what they're called. I'm sure someone on the Board can give you the name.
I have to make a conscious effort to stay out of my rotary cutter's "line of fire" or I surely would do the same thing! The worst thing I've done so far is sew my finger-on the longarm! That hurt, too! Good luck.

Yes, I'm sure Fons and Porter has them. In each episode I've seen, whoever
is using the rotary cutter takes the time to put on and then remove the glove. I've kind of laughed at it, just because it has seemed so "unnecessary".... guess you've proved that I'm wrong!

You might also check food service places if you have them nearby. Most commercial kitchens have similar gloves for those who use slicers and do other cutting. Or if you know someone in that industry they might be able to help you.

I cut down the side of my forefinger about three years ago and had 8 stitches. There was a quilt shop at a show a couple months later that was selling some sort of guard that went on the ruler. My aunt was determined I needed it but I held out. I am very careful now and have not cut my fingers while moving but have managed to touch my knuckle to the blade a couple of times recently.

i am positive there is some sort of protective handwear. You just need to try some and see what works best for you.

OMG! I'm so sorry to hear that you cut yourself so badly! I hope you heal quickly. It's not something I've done or even thought about before, but you sure brought it to my attention. I think I'll get gloves, now.
