Which rotary cutter do you prefer and why? My favorite is the Martelli ergo, because I can cut for hours and not have pain in my wrists. Just curious to see what others prefer.

Jim's Gem 07-18-2010 03:24 PM

Martelli for me!!!!

QKO 07-18-2010 03:32 PM

Another vote for the Martelli Ergo (left-handed).

Cindy likes the standard Clover better though.

nativetexan 07-18-2010 03:33 PM

I still use my Olfa one.

Bluelady 07-18-2010 03:47 PM

Martelli! Definitely saves my wrist.

cjomomma 07-18-2010 04:34 PM

I have a Martha Stewart cutter and I love it. It's just the right size for my hands, which are not dainty. The only problem is I can't find blades for it.

stefanib123 07-18-2010 05:41 PM

Cjomomma, my Walmart had the MS rotary tools and blades on clearance a little while back. I started to get them since they were so cheap, but I promised myself I'd stop buying stuff just because it on sale, LOL!

If I had known, I would have got them all for you.

Maybe them clearing them out means they may quit making them?

ETA: I'm in Eastern Ky, btw.

franie 07-18-2010 05:42 PM

I dearly love my Gingher! The weight of it and how it fits my hand is a dream come true.

Pam 07-18-2010 05:47 PM

Martelli, but the little plastic part that holds the spring broke off. Now I use a rubber band to hold it open while cutting and closed while not in use. I need to look on line for a replacement. My friend got one on Overstock.com, but I do not remember the price.

justwannaquilt 07-18-2010 05:50 PM

I use a cheapo fiskar, my mom has one of the olfas and I just can't work that thing. lol I think you have to hold it at a really funny angle to get the blade on the fabric.

Lori L 07-18-2010 05:51 PM

I've only used an olfa.....but I like it :)

pojo 07-18-2010 06:03 PM

I have a fiskar too.

I have a olfa too. I forgot about that one it is in the basement.

mms61371 07-18-2010 06:07 PM

My daughter bought me a fiskars. I really like it. It is pink with flowers on it. It works great for me!

bearisgray 07-18-2010 06:07 PM

I bought a Gingher one on e-bay and I don't care for it - the blade seemed to get dull really fast.

I like the olfa ergonomic ones that automatically cover the blade when they are put down.

I wish I had known too. I didn't think about asking anyone to check their WM's for me. What part are you in. I have a sister in Lexington, Ky.

iamjanet 07-19-2010 05:48 AM

Martelli gets my vote.

loves2quilt 07-19-2010 06:17 AM

I love my Ginghers.

CarrieAnne 07-19-2010 06:21 AM

I have only used the Fiskars, I think it works well.

In a little town called Pikeville. That was about a month ago. They may have been clearing them out just because they downsized the Cricut aisle. They did have an entire big aisle with Cricut and Martha Stewart stuff, and now its like a quarter of an aisle, with no MS stuff.

Have you checked Walmart.com?

JEM65 07-19-2010 06:27 AM

Olfa & Fiskars - like them both! I have all different types, small, large, ergonomic, pinking!

QBeth 07-19-2010 08:01 AM

Self closing Olfa rotary cutters are the only ones I use. If someone else comes up with a self closing one, I might give it a try. Too many furry ones to risk them getting cut due to my forgetfulness.

msariano 07-19-2010 08:15 AM

I have always used an Olfa cutter but always have had a problem even with a new blade--it seems I don't apply enough pressure when cutting and always have a few straggly threads which moves the fabric when I cut them a second time. Now that my hands are going bad, I'm going to try another brand.

teacherbailey 07-20-2010 02:36 AM

I love my ancient Olfa, the one I bought the year they came out. I have a newer one with a retractable blade and I use it too, but my favorite is that old Olfa, the first model.

Darlene 07-20-2010 02:39 AM

I have a Clover and I love it.

If you go to the Martelli sight..they will send you a replacement for free! My spring broke and they sent me a new one.

quiltlin 07-20-2010 05:58 AM

I'm a fan of the "old-fashioned" Olfa cutter. I tried the Martelli cutter and didn't like it at all.

gcathie 07-20-2010 06:15 AM

I have the self closing Olfa cutter just love it cause the blade seems to stay sharp a lot longer and is safer...:-)

If you call Martelli they will send you a new spring. I had a little piece of plastic break and they sent it to me.

catrancher 07-20-2010 08:08 AM

I have the Olfa 45mm with the scissors-like grip. I like it better than the retractable blade type because when it's not in use, the blade automatically retracts. You have to do it manually with the other style. I have one made by Gingher (same size) that I don't like at all. I use the Gingher to cut paper. Also, I have one (45 mm again) with a pinking blade that I like for cutting the ends of fabric when I'm going to wash it. I get a lot less raveling that way.

Nanjun 07-20-2010 08:51 AM

I use the Martelli b ut think I need a new blade.

catlover 07-20-2010 09:47 AM

I have all sizes of the Olfa ergonomics. They work well for me. I got a Gingher as a gift. Haven't tried it yet. It looks just like my Olfa only not yellow.

I use a Quilters Rule - about 20 years old with a blue curved handle.

Contact the Martelli Company. They have great customer service and should be able to help you out. When I had some problems with my first Martelli, they replaced it for free because it was a widespread problem that they had re-designed the cutter to eliminate.

I love my Martelli cutters (yes I have more than one) but I also like the Olfa ergos, the ones that you squeeze the handle to expose the blade and it retracts when you let go.

have fun,
Pati, in Phx

Quilting Nana 07-20-2010 12:14 PM

I have a Martelli and like it but I really like my Olfa with the retractable blade better

gale 07-20-2010 12:31 PM

I only use fiskars. I've never heard of the Martelli one but I tried Olfa and returned it.

cmill 07-20-2010 03:01 PM

I have only used a Fiskars cutter with the original blade which I thought I would have had to replace by now, but it is still sharp. I cut out one double wedding ring quilt (gueen sized) and turned the blade over and now have cut out a second double wedding ring quilt (queen sized) with this same blade. I am a new quilter, so not sure how long the blades should last.

Annz 07-20-2010 07:00 PM

I have like 3 Olfas and like them.

barbrdunn 07-20-2010 07:04 PM

I only use the Olfa Ergonomic because the bland only comes out when you press the handle, then automatically retracts...It is really a safety thing.

auntiehenno 07-20-2010 07:24 PM

Have the olfa, but need to purchse a more ergonomic friendly one.

slimfeather 07-20-2010 07:50 PM

I had the same thing happen to my Martelli rotary cutter & I called the company & they told me to send the whole thing back(minus the blade) to them and I would get a replacement. Waiting for my replacement!! It's worth a try.
