I just used my rotating cutting mat for the 1st time. Makes cutting SOOOOOOOOO much faster!

amma 07-02-2010 06:59 AM

One of these are high up on my wish list :D:D:D

ToucanSam 07-02-2010 07:00 AM

I love mine!

dkabasketlady 07-02-2010 07:11 AM

I have the 12" & 17" ones and don't know how I managed before. I even bought them for my DM & DS and they both love their's also!!!

sharon b 07-02-2010 07:15 AM

And what did you cut out  LOL

I want one too ... someday  What size do you have ?

SC 07-02-2010 07:48 AM

I used mine to cut out some squares for a fun & done I'm working on. My mat is only 12" I think. Really wanted a larger one but couldn't afford it. This one will have to do for now but I WILL have a larger one some day!

Marjpf 07-02-2010 07:48 AM

I bought the 17" and agree - what did I do without it?
So what did you cut out?

Ps 150 07-02-2010 07:57 AM

I don't know how quilters lived without them when squaring up blocks! It's the perfect tool to save our backs. I might even investin a second one.

sew_lulu 07-02-2010 07:57 AM

Yeah, it's a must have!

BellaBoo 07-02-2010 08:10 AM

I have large rectangle one I bought years ago at Hancock
Fabrics. I haven't seen a rectangle one since. And the mat is replaceable! Great product. Odd it's no longer available.

sew_southern 07-02-2010 09:01 AM

I just bought a 18X24 a few months ago, it's a good size. Hancocks had there rotary mats for 50% off on a holiday weekend. It was an upgrade from a smaller one that had been used to many times. :)

Beginner64 07-02-2010 09:10 AM

Have 4 or 5 of them, all the way up to 24"x36". Also have one that has a ironing board on the other side. I wouldn't have it any other way.

raptureready 07-02-2010 09:10 AM

They make a bigger rotating rotary mat than 12 1/2"?? I didn't know that. I'll have to look for one. I have the twelve and a half and love it. It's so much easier to spin the whole mat than to have to pick up the fabric and turn it. I love mine.

Shibori 07-02-2010 09:48 AM

Not sure of the brand but don't buy the baby blue colored one from Walmart. The lines are painted on and have already chipped/flaked off after only using it once or twice.

BellaBoo 07-02-2010 09:52 AM

The one I have is in a white rectangle base and the mats sits flush inside it. It's 11 x 17. It's raised off the base about 1/2". It is so easy to turn, it glides like a lazy susan. It's weighted and doesn't tip at the end of the cut. The only name on the base is Amazing Notions by Elna.

cinnya 07-02-2010 10:00 AM

I had a old lazy susan ,glued on one of those rubber shelfliners to keep everything from sliding and topped it with a cuttingmat which I cut to size...TADA
Have been using it for 6 years

SC 07-02-2010 10:02 AM

Mine is a Fiskars. It isn't self-healing like some but I think I'll get my money's worth out of it.

BellaBoo 07-02-2010 10:07 AM

The only rotating mat I've seen at Walmart is the Fiskars yellow one. We use them at guild and they are nice. The local Walmart donated two to our guild.

Laura1557 07-02-2010 10:12 AM

50% off coupons: I may just get one of those this weekend! I can't say I've seen a 17-inch around here, but I have seen 12s.

If you can find the older heavy wooden lazy susans it would work great. Keep an eye out at thrift stores and yard sales. The newer plastic ones will tip at the ends when cutting off center. I tired making one with the plastic turntable. It wasn't sturdy enough.

Yup mine is the wooden one.

shaverg 07-02-2010 03:47 PM

What brand do you recommend. I keep looking at them but the Olfa is so expensive and I would like at least the next size up from the 12". I will use a JoAnns coupon when I decide.

Jingle 07-02-2010 03:58 PM

I bought the 17" on sale and I love it.

Evelynquilts 07-02-2010 04:40 PM

I have 2 and love them both...bought mine at Joanne with coupons...

quilting.addict 07-02-2010 05:02 PM

I have the 12x17, the 18x24, and the 36x58 that covers my whole work table. I don't want to do without any of them!!! I use the small ones upstairs in front of the TV to cut apart HST and square them up. I use the biggest one even to cut fabric for draperies and other sewing projects!
Lucky me, but remember, I bought all of them when they were 50% off.

36 x 59 rotating mat? I've never seen one that big. It would need a lot of room to turn!

UglyCook 07-02-2010 08:41 PM

I really like my 12 inch one, but I was so dumb at first I didn't notice that when I picked it up I had left the base on the table. Everytime I used it there was a hump in the middle and it didn't turn very easily. I was about to give up on it when I saw that other THING sitting over there....duh! Works great now.

debbieumphress 07-02-2010 09:05 PM

My LQS sold her business to another LQS and I bought the cutting matt she used to measure and cut. She had just replaced the older one. So for 40.00 it was mine. She paid 185.00 for it. But now it is under my bed. I want to make a cutting table for it but have to clean out the room and make room for it. I actually thought about cutting it to the size of my cutting table DH made. Shame to do that. Maybe one day it will come out of hiding. LOL I have 4 sizes myself and selfhealing, do not self heal. Maybe it's because I cut out so many kits for charity quilting.
By the way. it is about 36" x 70 or larger. Took up a whole counter like at Joann's only not as long.

sewnsewer2 07-02-2010 09:48 PM

Aren't they wonderful!

ConnieF 07-02-2010 10:31 PM

The Fun and Done patterna are great.
I have a few of the patterns and just got one of the new ones this last week....
The cutting matts and rotary cutters are awsome.
And we ysed to trace from cardboard templates and cut out with scissors.... oh my what changes I have seen through the last 40 years....

I was wondering how you would manage rotating a mat that huge!

All, right, I feel much better now. I was wondering if I've been lost to the quilting world to have missed such an awesome gadget. Sad that they don't exist, though, lol. Probably hard to manage though.

Hehe, that gave me the funniest visual, though!

littlehud 07-03-2010 07:22 PM

I wish I had one. There was a booth at the quilt show that had the bases. The man there made one for his wife and eveyone wanted one too. You put your mat on it and it rotated. I didn't get all the info.

quilting.addict 07-03-2010 07:28 PM

I just looked at this website http://store.quilting-warehouse.com/085317.html and the prices look really decent. Am I right??

UglyCook 07-03-2010 11:19 PM

The 12x12 inch is on sale for $19.99 at Joanns. I guess it depends on what size you are looking for.

smagruder 07-04-2010 03:34 AM

I have two one is 4 X 12 I think and the other is larger 18 X 18 love both of them.

A friend of mine's husband made me one and I do like it. But I was perfectly happy using a regular (8x10) mat and just turned it as I cut. Just seemed to work just as well.

gaillynne 07-04-2010 06:16 AM

They are expensive - but worth it!
