Rowenta vs Oliso

I need to replace my iron and am torn between the Rowenta and Oliso. Does anyone have any suggestions .,, pro or con?

dunster 06-04-2015 12:42 PM

I will never buy another Rowenta after the shoddy, rude service experience I had with the last one. I don't know anything about Oliso. My current iron is a Reliable Digital Velocity V100 - terrible name, but it produces the best steam of any iron I've ever owned, and it's made so that it can't leak. You can also put it in a mode so that it doesn't automatically shut itself off. I really like it.

ManiacQuilter2 06-04-2015 12:45 PM

I love my Rowenta. Purchased it at Costco. No spitting and it heats up faster than my previous Rowenta did. Good Luck in your search.

NJ Quilter 06-04-2015 12:49 PM

I've had several Rowentas. Have either worn them out or broken due to repeated droppage. No leaking issues or any other issues with them. No experience with Olisio.

ekuw 06-04-2015 01:59 PM

Last iron I had was a Rowenta-never did heat up properly right from the start. I am convinced that now that they are made in China, they are all the same. They are not made to last, so I figure I'll buy a decent mid-priced iron and when it goes it goes. I am using a T-Fal iron now, it leaks a bit, but it steams super well.

My newest iron is a Rowenta and I love it. This one is actually made in Germany - not sure if that makes a difference. I think they are not all made there???? I had an Oliso for about one year and it died - won't get another.

nativetexan 06-04-2015 04:10 PM

many quilters here have complained about Rowenta irons catching fire. I had one for years and loved it until I plugged it into a power strip outside my sewing room. I wanted to iron on some fusible batting and my power strip blew out. Scared me! tossed away the strip and iron!!

Latrinka 06-04-2015 04:30 PM

I don't know about either of those brands, but I recently got a Hamilton Beach at Big Lots for 25 dollars, and I love it. I call it my Cadillac of irons, because I think it's the nicest iron I've ever had, and I've been through a few! Have already dropped on floor once, no damage done!

I too have the one made in Germany and I love it. Have had it a few years now and don't have
any complaints. You are right about all of them not being made there.

Dolphyngyrl 06-04-2015 04:54 PM

I have both. Both leak. The oliso is the newest and leaked from the start. I have had the rowenta about 8 years It still works I can just no longer use water as it leaks too bad. It heats up hotter and faster than my oliso. I wanted to try the oliso but part of me just wishes I got a new rowenta. Either way both brands get mixed reviews which makes it hard to choose

sewbeadit 06-04-2015 05:24 PM

I won't have another Rowenta, they couldn't give me a new one. Had way too many problems. I now use a black and decker 25.oo one that works fine, I use it without steam.

QuiltnLady1 06-04-2015 05:33 PM

I had a Rowenta start to smoke (set off the smoke detector) -- bought a Panasonic with the titanium sole plate and like it a lot. Our shop had an Oliso and the front post quit going all the way back in and it would catch the edge of fabric when we tried to use it so I stayed away from the Oliso.

Shelby 06-04-2015 05:40 PM

I won't have another Rowenta either, too many problems. I just got a Hamilton Beach Durathon Digital, I really like it. I like a heavy iron, and this is it!

cashs_mom 06-04-2015 05:46 PM

I just replaced my Laurastar Steam Generator with an Oliso this year. It was a bit of an adjustment at first getting used to using an iron instead of a steam generator, but now I really like the Oliso. I got mine at Bed, Bath & Beyond. With the 20% off coupon and my gift cards, it was free!

My Rowenta was made in Germany. Had it for years and love it.

ctrysass2012 06-04-2015 08:09 PM

Have always stayed away from the Rowenta because of the reviews. My husband got an Oliso for me for Christmas 1 year & I liked it until the feet went screwy. They started popping in & out all the time. Ironing, setting or standing on end.
Very difficult to press anything. Went back to the GE I've had since 1978. It squeals if I use steam because it has been dropped a few times but still gets very hot so it is a dry iron. Spray bottle or Best Press for steam. Old must be good! :)

nanacc 06-04-2015 09:39 PM

After fighting many others (including Rowenta), I bought a T-fal at WalMart (about $35) and have had no issues with it. It steams very well without leaks. A friend had the Oliso and had the same problems as ctrysass2012.

Ariannaquilts 06-05-2015 03:01 AM

I have had my Oliso for years and absolutely love it. I have never had a problem with leaks! The only thing that is or rather can be a problem is that when you are accustomed to the iron coming up off your item that your ironing and you use a different iron you tend to forget about the independent coming up and could burn something, oops! Mostly I stick to using my Oliso for this very reason.

paoberle 06-05-2015 03:10 AM

I have had a Rowenta for years and love it.

sandy l 06-05-2015 03:39 AM

I have a Continental dry iron, no steam, no auto-shut off, and it's heavy. Really like it. I use to have Rowentas until I started having steam leaking problems too. Tried several other brands, never the Oliso tho. Found the Continental at Vermont Trading Co., but could probably find it somewhere else.

Hcim55 06-05-2015 03:51 AM

I own both...like both...however...so far I really like the features of the oliso the best. I really like being able to just let go of iron and no need to set up on end. One side note.....doesn't bother me...but I took my oliso to a quilt retreat and the noise that the feet make were a little annoying to those who were not using it.

gigi712 06-05-2015 06:48 AM

I have both, too. I use the Oliso for steam. I've had my Rowenta for a thousand years, it's made in Germany and had many drop tests, thus it doesn't steam anymore....... wonder why? lol The Rowenta gets much hotter than the Oliso which I love for ironing starched pieces.

Onebyone 06-05-2015 06:50 AM

No Rowenta for me because of horrible customer service. None of my money will ever go in their pockets again. My guild had the Olisos and I like using them but one has started to leak. The best iron I have used is the Reliable brand. My DD borrowed it and I will probably not get that one back. Right now I'm using a Classic Black and Decker and several $6 irons from Walmart. I use the cheap irons for fusibles and gluing.

Lori S 06-05-2015 09:15 AM

I will not buy another Rowenta. The first one died by heating up past anything temperature I had ever seen... It melted the cotton poly thread on blocks I was piecing... it was beyond white hot. I foolishly thought it was a fluke and purchased another as I loved the amount of steam... after about 1 1/2 years it did the same thing. So In five years I had spent over $240.00 on top of the line irons.... NOT a good investment. I have wondered about the Oliso but after being literally burned in the past ... I doubt I will invest in another expensive iron.

Maureen NJ 06-05-2015 12:53 PM

I had an expensive Rowenta and it leaked. I picked up a refurbished Rowenta for $25 at an outlet mall about 5 years ago. Just used distilled water in it and emptied it after use (or after a day of quilting) and only recently has it started to leak. It is not bad enough to replace. Now I just wish I could remember where I got it.

Weezy Rider 06-05-2015 01:20 PM

Leaky Rowenta, bought a Reliable. The Oliso won't work. I have a strangely sized ironing board with a heavy tray for the iron. No room to leave an iron flat.

JulieW8 06-05-2015 02:33 PM

I recently bought a Rowenta at BB&B and I'm happy with it so far. I considered the Oliso but when I saw all the reviews about it leaking, I decided it wasn't worth the money. Even if the Rowenta leaks (many reviews for that as well), it cost me less than half what I would've paid for an Oliso.

suern3 06-05-2015 03:00 PM

I bought a Shark at Walmart last year for about $40. to replace an iron I had for quite a few years which kind of just quit. I don't remember the brand but it was common, nothing expensive. I brought home a couple other brands before and returned them before I tried this Shark. I like a heavier iron and this one is just right. It has a burst of steam and a water spray and I use both. No leaking, the instructions do say to be sure to let it heat up the water before using to prevent leaking. It also has the dreaded automatic shut-off, but actually doesn't take long at all to heat back up for pressing seams. Sorry, this doesn't answer your original question, just my 2 cents:) I've never really felt compelled to spend lots of dollars on an iron and actually can't relate to it.

Ps 150 06-05-2015 08:01 PM

After having two Olisos and they both died inside of a year, I won't get another one. Their warranties aren't worth the paper they're printed on and their customer service was anything but helpful. Since then, I've bought two Rowentas and they're both great. I don't have leaking issues and they both have great steam.

Cybrarian 06-05-2015 08:43 PM

I have also had my Oliso for years- no problems, I love it. However, no matter what brand it seems there are as many who have problems as those who have a great experience- so my advice is whatever brand you purchase make sure you buy it from a reputable vendor with a good return policy & keep the box & the receipt!

jmoore 06-06-2015 03:00 AM

I purchased a Rowenta a few months ago but it is still in the box, not because I had any issues with it but I don't want my husband using it to iron his clothes (for the price I paid). I, in turn, use his Black & Decker which is great for pressing blocks and small projects. If I ever need another iron, I will probably stick to B&D. : p

radarxa 06-06-2015 03:07 AM

My first Rowenta shorted out and became a mini flame thrower for a few seconds while it scorched its cord. My husband gifted me with a new one shortly after and within two months the handle broke. Done with Rowentas!

grann of 6 06-06-2015 04:48 AM

I had a Rowenta Steam Generator several years ago that started leaking and spitting. When I wrote Rowenta about this problem, they replied that Rowenta irons will work fine if you use them every day, but otherwise will leak and spit. So needless to say, I am not impressed with their service. Know nothing about the Oliso, and I had a Shark that I loved, till it caught fire while I was using it. Now I buy B&Ds and throw them out if they fail. I would never buy an expensive iron (more than $30) again.

On another board someone posted about the Panasonic/titanium sole plate. They said any gunk that gets on it cleans right off. I've thought about getting one since anything I get seems to collect gunk pretty much overnight.
I've had 2 Rowenta and neither one worked well - lots of sputtering and spitting or no steam at all!
Currently I have a cheapy with a teflon sole plate. Gunk does not come but it doesn't leak!

#1piecemaker 06-06-2015 05:05 AM

I'm not familiar with either of these irons. I usually just go to Walmart and buy the cheapest one available. So far I haven't had ay problems.

EmiliasNana 06-06-2015 05:23 AM

Had a Rowenta.............leaked. Bought a Reliable..............it died after three years; never leaked, just quit heating..................Bought a Black and Decker for $29, so will just replace it when it dies with another BD. Tired of spending big bucks for shody products.

MarthaT 06-06-2015 05:25 AM

I had a Rowenta years ago and LOVED it until the thermostat went out. Bought another one and it was a whole different iron and, yes, it leaked. After reading much discussion on this board, I went to the local Freds store and just picked up a cheap one. I chose is strictly because it had the longest time before it automatically shut off. It is a Sunbeam. I paid about $25 for it and it works great. I'll never spend $80 on another iron.

hray 06-06-2015 05:36 AM

Bought a blue Oliso on a Black Friday sale last year; it took some getting used to, since I used to leave the iron on a seam while I readied the next patch to be ironed...probably a bad habit anyway!

The Oliso heats up very quickly, even after the automatic shutoff. No leaks yet (nearly a year old.) And on sale, much less $$ than the Rowentas.

Fizzle 06-06-2015 05:36 AM

Had my Rowenta for years. Loved it. Always worked great. Got hot. Adjustable temps. Started getting gummy (fusible stuff :(.) replaced it with the Oliso (because of watching Jenny tutorials). It is great. I like it because of the lift but it is an adjustment. Takes some time to get used to. But I have not had any troubles with it. They are $$$ but I got mine marked way down at Joanns. Older model maybe? It is blue. Would love pink or yellow but money does dictate sometimes. So far it is worth it. Boy, irons are expensive!

Maire 06-06-2015 06:13 AM

I've had Rowenta, biggest problem was leakage and one that suddenly died. I keep the leaking one for use as a dry iron.
I now have an Oliso, and love it. I did have a problem and was extremely impressed with their customer service!! Excellent, best customer service I ever experienced with any company. Fast & efficient, no hassle, replaced my iron immediately. Love my Oliso, would buy again.
