Ruler question
 

In a packet wanting me to buy a magazine, there was a quilt pattern. Within the body, the instructions gave one set of cutting dimensions for Fons and Porter rulers and another set of cutting measurements for other rulers. What's the difference. I consider myself a newbie of one year so this really is puzzling me.

Does it say which specific ruler?

They do have a branded ruler for doing corners and sides for quilts set on point. Is the pattern set that way?

Fons & Porter have become all about marketing, and are known to now do some shifty things. There have been a number of threads on the subject. a 'free' Cd that isn't free at all comes to mind.

It's probably using their "half and quarter" ruler for making half square triangles. Using their ruler you cut the strips the width of the final unfinished HST, i.e., for 4 1/2 HST, cut strips 4 1/2 inches wide. The other option they give is if you make the HSTs the old fashioned way, that is, add 7/8 inch to the unfinished size.

Eleanor Burns did the same thing, explained how to cut using her rulers and again with other brand name rulers. Good thing for them to do.

Correction: adding 7/8 inch to the finished size (4 inch finished, cut 4 7/8 strip). I think I got the same packet - is it the Milky Way free pattern?

Some rulers, triangles come to mind, have one or more tips cut off. The same ruler from a different brand may be pointy. If you are cutting from strip sets, the strips would need to be cut at different widths, or you need to know how to position rulers from different brands.
The reason why the points are cut on some is to allow you to cut squares and triangles from the same strip and/or to make piecing easier to match seams.

im a ruler and gadget junky... In the end most are the same, they figure out the calculations for you already, some allow for skipped steps of other rulers, other have nice grippies, others have points. some have points cut out.. it just depends on if you want to spend the funds on them.. Do what your most comfortable with.. try w/o the specialty ruler and if you ok with that way no need for the ruler. If you looking for speed and accuracy ( which is my case) try the ruler..

Wondering...I bought this ruler (Half & Quarter). I'm thinking that I could also use this ruler for flying geese blocks. What do you think ? Of course, they would prefer me to buy the flying geese ruler, but no need for that.
