Ruler Quilting on a DSM
 

I was thinking of trying the Westalee foot with basic ruler to quilt on my Babylock Jane which is a straight stitch machine with a decent sized harp. Before I drop $55 on the Westalee products, I'd appreciate feedback on how difficult it is to use the ruler from those who have tried. Does it feel really awkward at first? How long is the learning curve?

I have Westalee & Gina Perkes rulers. Wish I had known about Gina's first. Hers are a more practical, useful design in my opinion.

I have the Westalee ruler and beginner ruler kit. I am just now using it on my Halloween wall hanging. The key is to have the no-slip material on the bottom of the ruler and to wear gloves. (I use regular garden gloves where I cut the index finger and thumb out so I have fingers free to grab thread and such.)

You align the ruler to the edge of the foot, support the ruler with one hand and the quilt with the other. Then move the quilt - keeping pressure on the ruler against the foot. It takes just a bit of practice to get the hang of it. Now I even use the ruler to do SID. LOVE IT!

Well, I just ordered the ruler kit. Let's see how this goes!

I'm going to take an all-day class on the Westalee rulers - am so anxious to try it. Learning curve will depend on the individual but I think it will be worth the investment

i love rulers. Not hard just different

I am taking a 7 week class with the Westalee rulers. It's really fun. I've done some ruler work with the basic starter kit too and you can do quite a bit using what comes in that kit.
The main trick is to remember to keep your foot against the ruler. Sounds obvious, but it's easy to start to wander.

What is different about her rulers?

When you get your Westalee foot there is a spacer that they suggest you use to get the correct height for the foot placement. That's a good general guideline but if you find you are getting skipped stitches you may need to lower it slightly.
