I use a fan that I put away from me while sewing, no turbelence, but keeps me cool too.

Jennifer22206 06-30-2011 04:31 AM

I have a ceiling fan and a desk top fan. The desk top fan isn't always on, but when I have to put it on, I use the clip to put it on my ironing board facing me

gmaybee 06-30-2011 04:43 AM

Ceiling fans in all rooms.

sidmona 06-30-2011 04:45 AM

My sewing room is over the garage and faces southeast. I use the central air, a ceiling fan and a stand alone fan. Yes I have some trouble with the air flow from the stand alone but I am forever hot (even in the winter) and I love my breeze.

Same here.,,,,,,,,,,,,A/C and ceiling fans and my back is to the fan

I bought a small clip on fan and clip it to a shelf. It has 3 speeds and the lowest one works great for me. Cools me but doesn't blow anything around.

ceiling fans

valsma 06-30-2011 05:15 AM

I use a free standing fan. Actually it is a table top fan based on like a big wind machine type fan they use for clearing smoke and stuff with the fire dept. Has a good motor and I put it in front of the window across the room to blow toward me. It used to sit on my cutting/sewing table but I got tired of fighting the wind.

Quilter Day-by-Day 06-30-2011 05:49 AM

I use ac but also have a little clip on fan that I use that clips onto my sewing table,I can move it around if need be.

kathyd 06-30-2011 05:55 AM

I have a ceiling fan that runs almost always. When I get too hot, I have a small fan that sits under my sewing desk and blows on my legs. It can keep me pretty comfortable and no fabric or threads flying around!

I have a small tower fan that I put on the floor across the room. It circulates the air, but keeps the breeze below my work surface.

mhansen6 06-30-2011 06:00 AM

I have a ceiling fan that has a mind of it's own. Turns it's self off or on all the time. My sewing machine is right next to a sliding glass door so if I want fresh air I just open it up. We also have AC.

Crickett Sweet 06-30-2011 06:11 AM

I have successfully used my small fan on the floor pointed up at me.

Doreen 06-30-2011 06:28 AM

I have a ceiling fan and a small fan that is usually going when I am sewing. I don't use the overhead lights because it produces heat. I have a 24 Watt stand up light that produces "white light" No problems with threads, I usually sweep my floor when I'm done for the day!

nativetexan 06-30-2011 06:33 AM

my sewing room is in the basement. i have a small fan i turn on at times. i tilt it up a bit where it will move air but not be directly on me. my overhead lights get very hot.

grannypat7925 06-30-2011 06:41 AM

I limit to a ceiling fan. The others frustrate me with the movement of things I am trying to hold still.

If its so hot I'd need a ceiling fan and AC to keep cool, I'd probably not be quilting that day - sharet

greaterexp 06-30-2011 07:18 AM

I'm sewing in the attic now, which gets extremely hot at times. None of the screens there are very snug, and with wasps around, I can't open the windows much. (I get exercise running from them occasionally!) I have a little fan, about 8 inches in diameter, which I aim more at my waist down when I'm sitting at the machine. I adjust it as I move around the room. Having that small fan is a life saver without having everything flying around.

Lady Diana 06-30-2011 07:41 AM

Perhaps a fan at floor level would keep things from flying around. I have ceiling fans here is TX even in the ceilings on the back porch.

In the sewing studio I have a small window ac. I also use a ceiling fan and a rotating fan. I keep both fans on med or low. Yes, it does blow things a little, but it's betten than trying to deal with the sweat drips.

texpat45 06-30-2011 07:52 AM

Ceiling fan on low - 24-7 with the AC set on frigid.

LOL. Bernie, you just gave me a great laugh! *private summers* lol

Boxer mom 06-30-2011 07:57 AM

You might try pointing to the roof or another wall so that it bounces off them first and you don't get the gust of wind but will still keep you cool.

clsurz 06-30-2011 08:26 AM

My living in the deep south where temperatures get into the high 90's and as high as 115 degrees not counting the heat index during the summer all my ceiling fans run 24/7 all year long and air conditioner is set to 75 during summer months.

We don't have four seasons here like some other places and what little of winter we have which is usually from end of November to end of January I still run the ceiling fans and will not have air conditioner on.

It takes care of itself with ceiling fans in every room of the house during cooler weather and for us that is getting down into the 80's or lower.

i also aim at the ceiling while running the a/c at 80 to reduce the humidity (that's the basement).

Grama Lehr 06-30-2011 09:01 AM

Being in CA, we run fans all of the time. I have a ceiling fan in every room of the house. But I only use low and medium speed in my sewing room. Or I also get bits and pieces all over the place.

Not to mention all of the thread trimmings that get blown across the top of the trash can onto the floor.

If you use a fan, is it a ceiling fan or a free-standing fan, and have you came up with any secrets to avoid turbulence at the needle but still get good air movement toward yourself?

ceiling fans help...blowing directly near machine could cause other issues..like lint getting where it don't belong, and moisture too!

EC 06-30-2011 12:40 PM

Fan on the floor, aimed toward me from the side, but not at my machine area.

RobertaMarie 06-30-2011 12:58 PM

I set mine on the floor and let it blow beneath the table level on low. Keeps the air moving but not my sewing. We have central A/C but leave it off unless the temps get really high, then we close off the windows and use the A/C. The fan really does keep the sewing room pleasant.
Stay cool and Sew Happily. ;)

GailG 06-30-2011 01:11 PM

I use the ceiling fan on the low setting. When things get really bad, I run a small occilating (sp?) fan at my feet. Let the thread scraps fall as they may. I just vacuum them up. When the weather is really hot and humid and nothing seems to help, I just bite the bullet and run the AC cooler.

Rosie the "Ripper" 06-30-2011 01:14 PM

Try using a circulating fan. It circulates the air but does not blow air at you. My mother had one years ago and it always kept us cool.

Marilynsue 06-30-2011 03:19 PM

We have central air and also use fans to circulate the air. When my stuff blows around I just put something heavy (scissors or such) and that solves the problem. If it doesn't, I take the time to put things away, and I HATE THAT!

OHSue 06-30-2011 03:25 PM

My husband keeps this place like a refrigerator, I usually have a sweater on when I go to my sewing area in the basement.

tmjennings 06-30-2011 04:11 PM

This summer if you are living in our part of Texas (temperatures 107 to 112) even with central cooling, I use a fan in the room, ceiling fan and a small fan blowing on my sewing machine. Our electric bills are going to be out of sight.

cpfrog 06-30-2011 04:48 PM

I use the ceiling fan even with the windows open to keep air moving.

OKAY... ceiling fans usually have a directional switch... clockwize in summer to direct air flow directly downwards; and counter-clockwize in winter so the air goes outwards and bounces off the walls to re-circulate (ie: the heat). Perhaps switching to "winter" might help???

and as a reminder, you can mark the switch on the fan (with tape or pen, pencil, etc.) W for Winter and S for Summer... (or O for Outwards and D for Down ...or whatever...

Hope this helps your blown-away projects.

Dee 06-30-2011 05:27 PM

I have a window air cond., a big fan facing toward the ceiling and 2 small fans. Not bad on the 3rd floor here in PA.
