Living in AZ I agree it's been very hot this year. I use a ceiling fan and only occassionally does it blow he thread across the trash can instead of in it but don't have any suggestions for the rest of your problem.Sorry :-(

We have ceiling fans in all the rooms. My machine has a self threading needle. I always keep a hanging bag on my table for scraps of fabric and thread. So there isn't that much mess.

I have a ceiling fan and adjust it to pull the air up instead of down onto my projects. Works great and I can have the fan on the high setting without blowing every little piece of anything around. Yes, I turned the fan on and the pieces I had laid out for my quilt blew in all directions - learned the hard way. Now I immediately switch it to draw the air up!

Ceiling Fan

My fan is behind me when I'm at the sewing machine, so doesn't affect my sewing.

I have central air but also have ceiling fans in every room but I sometimes get warm while at my sewing machine - I just purchased a red Vornado - (I like red) and keep it next to my machine - so far I haven't noticed any thread problems

[quote=ThayerRags]I know that not everyone uses a fan to help cool themselves while sewing, but my wife and I don’t run the AC down very low, and use free-standing fans to circulate the air instead. This Spring has been extremely hot here and we've used the fans quite a bit. Every once in a while, I find myself “fighting the wind” when handling my thread or fabric at my needle.

I have a double fan in the top of my double hung window

Gotta love my ceiling fans! No problem sewing.

I set the dial to exaust it takes the hot air out, and hardly disterbs anything. |
We have central air conditioning, and I love it and am very thankful that we have it, and so is my hubby after working in the hot sun in heavy welders coveralls all day.

Since we do not have air, I use a pedestal fan at the doorway to cool me when I iron, But I use a hassock fan under my sewing table by my foot pedal - I am cooled and my fabrics are not blown around.

My inlaws relatives do not have AC as they live in the north but the last few years the summers have been very hot there. The last time we visited my Sis in law, DH bought a window unit to put in the bedroom so we could sleep. She bears the heat as wearing a badge. There just isn't any way to be comfortable in a hot house. We aren't going there this year. Just too miserable in the hot house.

If you use a fan, is it a ceiling fan or a free-standing fan, and have you came up with any secrets to avoid turbulence at the needle but still get good air movement toward yourself? CD in Oklahoma |
We use a ceiling fan, but keep the machine away from directly under it. Also, cannot set it higher than medium speed. If I could have my choices, it would be one of those desk or floor fans than circle the air around without disturbing papers, etc. We bought 4 of those for my son when he was in Afghanistan and they work great. They come in different sizes.

Ceiling fans would be your best bet, they don't disturb your creativeness.

Thanks for all of the comments and suggestions.
It’s been so hot here in southwestern Oklahoma that we have to run fans both at our home sewing station and the ones at the shop. Our AC is overwhelmed with the number of consecutive days in triple digits (40-some now, I think). One evening, it was still 101 degrees on the 10 o’clock TV News weather map even. Once I get my fabric under the presser foot, I’m good. It’s the “keeping everything from running away” while trying to get it to the presser foot that’s the tough part. LOL! CD in Oklahoma |
I have a tall fan on the floor that moves from side to side. It hits my side/back and it does make my fabric ripple a little bit...I just hold it down... I don't sew a ton in the warm weather because of all the gardening and farming we do. I sew mostly in the cool weather.

I place a tabletop fan UNDER my sewing table; it helps me stay cool and doesn't blow my pieces around.

We have AC, ceiling fans and floors fans...and use them all, as needed! I like the idea of a floor fan under the sewing machine table!!
|
My sewing room is actually in a southwest facing sunroom. Not the greatest place to be in the summer! I sew mostly in the evenings when the sun finally goes down and it cools off. I've got a fan out there, but mostly I just open up all the sliders for cool air!
