Will the quilt police come after me if I just pick whatever blocks I want to learn for a sampler quilt?

Thought I'd just start down the list at quilterscache making whatever 12" blocks tickle my fancy and look challenging. Then just try different layouts until I like it.

The quilt would be king size so I'd need quite a few blocks!

DebraK 09-19-2010 07:30 AM

That is how I would do it.

Sewflower 09-19-2010 08:42 AM

Quilting is like eating. You pick what u like not what everyone thinks u should eat. Just make sure your finished blocks r the same size and your good to go

pookie ookie 09-19-2010 08:51 AM

Let them just try to come for you. It's a wonderful idea. We've got your back (I also knit and have very long needles at the ready).

littlehud 09-19-2010 09:02 AM

I don't see any problem with that. Isn't that what a sampler quilt should be? I say go for it.

Harmony 09-19-2010 09:06 AM

Your quilt--YOU get to choose! Good luck on your project--we want to see pics when you're done!

No quilt police here. Hymmmmmmm? WEll maybe. I usually ignore the flashing lights and keep on quilting.

DebsShelties 09-19-2010 09:10 AM

If they do tell them to come talk to me! I will sic my GUARD shelties on them!
Samplers are fun to do, gives you a variety of blocks to learn.

ann clare 09-19-2010 09:13 AM

No quilt police. The choice is all yours. Enjoy.

Pssst! The Quilt Police don't exist. Should you encounter one of the imposters, just keep on doing what you were doing, the way you were doing it!

Why couldn't you pick whatever blocks you wanted to do. It is your quilt and you can do whatever you please.

I remember way back in the 80s, someone told me , "A little bit of yellow goes a very long way." Well, my favorite color is yellow and a "little bit" is not nearly enough! Just look at my avatar.

Good luck with your project and do it your way!

Pam B 09-19-2010 10:11 AM

It is your quilt...do whatever you wish. As long as you are happy with it, it is nobody else's business.

That's EXACTLY how I started and finished my sampler quilt, I made about 20 blocks in the end, as my skills improved I found I went 'off' some of my first attempts, I didn't think any further than each block at a time, so I was never daunted!!

Here's a picture of the finished quilt, no pattern used and still on my bed after two years!!

kathyd 09-19-2010 10:42 AM

Sew what you like and forget the police.
Since it is a sampler and you sound like you are new to this I would suggest starting with blocks without a lot of pieces and work your way to the more difficult ones. (quilterscache marks them according to difficulty)
Do you have colors picked out? Sometimes a sampler is different blocks with coordinating fabrics but can also be the same block with different fabrics. With yours going to be king-size don't forget to allow for sashing which can also help if the block sizes are slightly different.
Good luck. Have fun and remember the board loves to see pics and we also love to offer advice!

Pardon me if I'm wrong, but isn't that what the famous Jane Stickle quilt is all about? She used every pattern known to womankind. And it's now held up to us as the true ultimate in quilt making.

So, I say go for it girl! Use your own talents to make a new design for your self or family and friends. Share it with us when you get it going well.

Your Quilt, Your Choice :D:D:D

Butterflyblue 09-19-2010 01:00 PM

That's what I decided to do for my first bed-size quilt. I haven't finished it, but I really enjoyed trying all the different blocks and learning new skills.

Quiltforme 09-19-2010 02:12 PM

From my understanding a sampler quilt is done out ofneed to record blocks that an aging quilter wanted to save. She would quilt up her best and favorite hence the sampler quilt. So in todays language you can make it whatever you want becuase you are the quilter and noone else. (not that your aging :)) Jade

tooMuchFabric 09-19-2010 02:15 PM

That's what a sample is, one of these, one of those, maybe 2 of that........
Go for it and post pics!!

My only suggestion is to use the same shades for the backgrounds of the different blocks so they will go together without clashing.

Exactly! This is supposed to be fun. There are no "wrong decisions", just "creative thinking". Have fun!

Thanks all of you for your wonderful comments, I am very proud of it, it took two years in the making, but I played with lots of other projects at the same time too!!

here'is a link or two about it:

I quilted it all on my Janome 9000, did it in two halves!!

There are lots of pictures posted through the whole topics if you want to see close ups

CompulsiveQuilter 09-20-2010 02:36 AM

Just choose fabrics that coordinate and can be used (in whatever proportion) with the combo of blocks.

steelecg 09-20-2010 03:31 AM

why not -it's your quilt and great way to learn something new

501quiltblocks 09-20-2010 04:18 AM

If the quilt police come after you, they should check with me first. I'm working my way through the book '501 Rotary-Cut Quilt Blocks' by Judy Hopkins (hence my username and blog). I've done 87 12" squares so far. It's a great way to hone your skills! I use the squares to make lap quilts, practice quilting, whatever. Have fun and don't worry about it. There are no rules. Use your creative juices and enjoy the journey!

sjhughson 09-20-2010 04:29 AM

Great Idea! Show us when you are done.

CorgiNole 09-20-2010 04:31 AM

This is supposed to be a fun hobby. I think that a sampler of whatever strikes your fancy would be wonderful.

Have fun! Cheers, K

mpeters1200 09-20-2010 04:41 AM

You must have rogue policemen where you are!

Quilting is supposed to be fun. What I like about samplers versus regular quilts is that I learned a new technique for each block. I was never concerned about making my first queen and how it was going or anything else that could have made me nervous. I learned so much that I might even be an advanced beginner now! At least I no longer refuse to make a pattern just because it has triangles in it. It's not that I was scared of them, I just don't like them.

Here are my two samplers. Both came directly from quilter's cache, also based on level of difficulty. The way she explains them though, the directions are great. There are some 3 and 4 pin difficulties in mine!

Sure cure:

Stand before your bathroom mirror.
Look yourself in the eye.
Repeat after me 10 times:
"There ARE no quilt police."
"There ARE no quilt police."
"There ARE no quilt police."
Now, stick your tongue out and go, "Pppfffftttt!"
You will be redeemed of all thoughts and fears of supposed-to's", what if's, may-I-shouldn't's, and the fear of non-existent quilt police.
Smile knowingly.

Hugs!

sampler quilts are absolutely stunning! My very first quilt was a sampler one - and was surprised at how well it turned out!
