Sashing assistance needed

I found these hand-pieced blocks in my church's quilting group's stash today. I find them beautiful and offered to put the quilt top together for our quilting group to hand quilt. I thought perhaps something to match the centers which are cheddarish. Suggestions?

Not sure I have the pic in the correct size.

loisf 03-19-2015 06:37 PM

We all have our own opinions, but I think the darkest color in the pinwheels, navy blue (I believe), would be a good sashing color. It would really set the blocks off. Maybe you could use a cheddar cornerstone in the sashing. Just my thoughts. I think it will be a very pretty quilt. It's nice of you to volunteer to finish the project.

Nammie to 7 03-19-2015 06:47 PM

Looks pretty like it is -- you really don't need sashing unless you want to make it bigger.

DonnaPBradshaw 03-19-2015 07:48 PM

I wouldn't add sashing if it was mine to do. The blocks are fine the way they are. I would put a couple of borders on it though.

masufa 03-19-2015 08:01 PM

If it is big enough now I wouldn't add sashing I like it this way.

Peckish 03-19-2015 09:15 PM

Count me as a no-sash vote, also. I think they're beautiful the way they are.

Barb_MO 03-19-2015 09:42 PM

Count me in on the No Sashing vote. I would only add a dark outer border, navy, drk gray or black.

notmorecraft 03-19-2015 11:30 PM

I wouldn't add dashing, but I would add two borders a narrow dark one and the a broader one in of the brights, I think this would make it pop. X

ykreeves 03-20-2015 02:45 AM

No, just add borders...very pretty as is!

NJ Quilter 03-20-2015 03:55 AM

Another vote for no sashing. It's lovely. Someone really did a lot of amazing work to hand piece all of those blocks. Nice plan to hand quilt it as well.

GingerK 03-20-2015 04:09 AM

I'm with Liosf. Narrow dark sashing with yellow cornerstones. Unless you can contact the block maker and get more of the same fabrics for borders. I think the different fabric would be less noticeable in sashing. That would also make it big enough that you wouldn't need borders.

Include me to with the no sash vote. They are beautiful blocks as is. Don't want to distract and so difficult to match the background fabric. Let these blocks SING as is!!

grandmary 03-20-2015 05:33 AM

What if you laid the blocks on a piece of dark fabric and "auditioned" what it would look like with sashing? That way you could try out different colors and see what looks best. The blocks are beautiful and I think a thinner sashing would showcase them better.

mckwilter 03-20-2015 06:07 AM

Add me to the no-sashing group. I agree with the 2-borders suggestion. If you want to add a bit of the cheddar, you could do cornerstones in the borders.

Homespun 03-20-2015 06:13 AM

Beautiful blocks. No sashing gets my vote!

Bug Lady 03-20-2015 06:18 AM

I also vote for no sashing but would consider as others have described--very narrow first boarder and then a slightly wider boarder in the darks. BUT, the older era such as this block describes did not use boarder and so you may not want to add boarders. It is a real beauty. Thanks for showing this.

No sashing for me. too. and especially not dark so close to the "neat colored things". It would crowd them and take away from them.

Boston1954 03-20-2015 12:38 PM

If you are bent on sashing, something dark would be good to cut down on the continuous white.

sewingsuz 03-20-2015 01:14 PM

Another vote for no sashing. the quilt is very pretty.

MadQuilter 03-20-2015 01:21 PM

One more voice for no sashing. It is pretty and colorful as is.

PenniF 03-20-2015 02:32 PM

I agree with the no sashing crowd.....it was my first reaction when i looked at the picture.

QuiltE 03-20-2015 04:02 PM

What a great find!

I'm not quite in the no sashing crowd ................ Those pinwheels would show themselves off so much nicer with some space between them.

So, I would look for a plain fabric to match/coordinate with the background fabric already used and either sash it with that or do alternate blocks of that plain fabric.

Your quilt will get larger .... or you could have two smaller quilts!

I am also for no sashing as the look of this top as is is very clean and sweet. Sashing breaks up/separates blocks and is not always the best plan for every quilt. In this case it will change the soft sweet feeling of the blocks, in my opinion.

no sashing, just borders vote, i'd separate the like ones though.

I agree with this opinion!

quiltorelse 03-20-2015 07:53 PM

What a find! I agree, no sashing. Like the idea of 2 borders.

shy 03-21-2015 04:47 AM

I vote for sewing the blocks as they are..then I would put a couple or 3 colored 3 inch borders..I would not go real dark..that would be too stark against the white..I think it would take away from the blocks to do it the other way

I agree with this person. Great quilt blocks

quiltlin 03-21-2015 06:13 AM

No sashing and I'd bind it in some shade of yellow.

carolynjo 03-21-2015 08:04 AM

One more vote for no sashing. If you were to try to use the cheddar color, I think it would detract from the overall design. I agree that a frame of darker colors would make a great border. Ultimately, though, it is your decision. Enjoy the journey.

trolleystation 03-21-2015 09:25 AM

No sashing, just borders, IMHO.

BettyGee 03-21-2015 09:37 AM

Don't change it, just add a border and quilt it. It is absolutely gorgeous.

momsbusy 03-21-2015 10:12 AM

I would skip the sashing. I think that it would detract from the blocks and their sense of movement. A small border and then a larger one would be nice, but they're not really necessary unless you're trying to increase the size.

quiltingbuddy 03-21-2015 11:39 AM

I guess I'm in the minority but I like the idea of a thin, dark sashing in between the blocks but I also like the idea of a narrow border and then a larger darker border on the outside. Would that make it too big? It's a really darling quilt! Hope you enjoy participating in this group effort! I sort of miss having a group who collaborates on quilts.

annette1952 03-21-2015 01:11 PM

Beautiful! No sashing for me either. Does need borders though. Either 1 or 2 of them in different widths

yngldy 03-21-2015 01:40 PM

Why not find a white that is close for the sashing and use the cheddar (or any color) for the cornerstones and binding?

Sweet quilt blocks.

mimi=17 03-21-2015 08:05 PM

It is perfect with out sashing.

earthwalker 03-21-2015 08:31 PM

I'm with the no sashing and a couple of borders brigade. They are pretty blocks.

I agree with all of the no sashing posts. Very Beautiful as is. If you want it larger add various widths of a few borders. Please post pictures when finished.
