Sashing or no?
I am doing a "Brown Bag 1 yd. Challenge" with my guild. I think the fabric in my bag is the ugliest I have seen in a while. My DH came home from work and saw me pawing through my stash for something to go with it. His comment was, "Honey, you aren't going to find anything in your stash to make THAT look good!" I was able to find a purple that works ok. Finding a border was so hard. Thank goodness for the lady at Quiltworks Northwest who helped me out. I never would have thought about auditioning the fabric she found for me. The ugly fabric looks so much better from a distance, so the pics I am going to try to attach make it look better. Trust me! Well, I didn't know what to do to cut it up small enough yet have it still be dynamic so I chose flying geese. Now I can't decide if I like it all in one piece or broken up into 24" blocks of four pinwheels. Note that the mock up I did doesn't have all the cornerstones, so don't hold that against me!

Ugh. I think my pics are now to big. I really liked how easy it was to post pics in the old forum. Well, I am going to have to practice, so when I figure it out, I guess you can give me opinions then. Ugh.

Ok. I got two on there before my editing time expired. So here is one that might be a better shot of the first choice.
I like number one...
I like it without the sashing.
I prefer it without sashing. If size is the issue for whether or not you use sashing, could you not add another border?
I like the version with the sashing. I think it's more restful to the eyes, and with these colors -- that just makes sense to me. If it had been done in shades of red and gold (think autumn colors), then I can imagine it without the sashing and it would remind me of falling leaves.
I think it will be easier to quilt if you have the sashing too, because you can do something cute in the sashing areas that will tie it together with the outer border. Also, I think using the sashing makes your border fabric look intentional -- and not like an afterthought... |
I think I like it better with the sashing. It breaks it up a little bit. I must say tho...it's NOT the ugliest fabric I've ever seen....LOL
I don't see ugly fabric....Just a beautifull quilt......
Which one is the ugly fabric?
I prefer the one with the sashing - it gives more dimension to the quilt and ties it together in a better way. With just the border it looks too separated and disjointed.
I like it with the sashing. I don't think the fabric is ugly. Sometimes it just needs something else with it to perk it up.
i usually go for sashings because i like to see the pattern of the block. however, it looks great without as well. and i don't see an ugly fabric, either.
I would go with the sashing on this one.
I like it with the sashing... very pretty quilt!
I like it with a sashing. ( But if it was my quilt I would put on a darker sashing to bring out the flying geese!) It will still make a great quilt!
I like # 2. It just seems more cohesive with the sashing. I don't think any of it is ugly, just not MY usual colors. What type/colors do you usually prefer that makes you think this is so ugly?
I like the smashing one better, it's less busy and brings out the blocks. Nice quilt.
I like it just fine both ways...what size do you want it?
I like the one WITH the sashing...as it incorporates the border fabric into the design area. Otherwise it just looks like the 3rd fabric (and 3rd color) in the quilt. (I'm not counting the off white background fabric/color)
I LOVE the opportunity to give my opinion on quilt top colors to use or layouts to use to other quilters. Don't you? :o |
I vote for sashing. I also don't see ugly fabric. I think it is quite pretty especially the way you are using it.
I like #2 better but either way it will make a beautiful quilt, where is the ugly part??????????
I vote with sashing!
I like it better with the sashing. Also maybe you could add a thin 1" inner border in the "red" fabric or another coordinating fabric. It looks really nice in the pics.

I like the secondary designs of the no-sashing, but I like the sashing, too.
It looks really good for a brown bag challenge - you've made the ugly fabric look nice - like an ordinary scattered floral print. :) |
I really like the sashing. Don't see anything ugly, just a pretty quilt in the making!
I like the sashing best. Not my colors, but I think it will turn out to be a pretty quilt. Good luck.
Can't see the ugly fabric from here. Nice photography!!
I vote "yes" to the sashing. |

Ok, here is the ugly part! I have already been to two quilt shops and was only able to find the one border fabric that went with it. I have a couple more I could go to, but this mauve is super hard to match. I tried to use a yellow, and even though I found one that matches, it overpowers the top. I haven't even found a green that will work.
I am toying with the idea of muslin sashing vs. the floral one. Don't have a mock up of that one yet. The size I was talking about was the pixel size of my pictures, not of the quilt. It is going to be a big lap size. I don't know if it will be going to a little girl or someone undergoing chemo. |
I like it with the sashing, too
I really like it with the sashing! LOVE the border fabric - excellent choice for the challenge!
with sashing looks good and you will be surprised at what a little creative quilting with a colored thread will do for the challenge fabric.
I like it with the shashing.
:) Where is the ugly fabric? Starting to look good to me. Cast my vote for shashing. BrendaK
Casting a vote for the sashing, your border material is beautiful! And I do not like your challenge material much either.
I like it without the sashing
I prefer the sashing.
I like it without the sashing. It lets the design morph into more than one design. With the sashing in place, it really defines the blocks as one pattern.
Cheers, k |
I like it with the sashing. I agree, while it may be a difficult fabric to work with, I would not call it ugly. At least, not now that you have pieced it into a lovely top! I like the way you cut it up in small pieces - that was good thinking! :P
