Do hope they replace it for you, does it have a warranty since you only bought it in July? So happy you were there and smelled the smoke and a fire was avoided. Keep us posted as to what takes place, wishing you well.

Dawneda 11-09-2010 10:18 AM

Sorry for your bad experience with your machine. Sure hope they replace it. Glad you are not hurt & are okay.

Jo Mama 11-09-2010 10:35 AM

I'd be freaked out too. It should be covered completely. I bought a Bernina 440 QE 6 months ago or so and after a week the feed dogs got stuck in the down position. Locl dealer talked me through the fix but it was a no-go. Being that is was Friday afternon they didn't want me to be without a machine over the weekend so brought out a new one on his way home from work. Just love this dealer... :-D

Quilting Nana 11-09-2010 10:38 AM

Sure hopes everything comes out OK for you.

Just thought -- perhaps we all should have a back-up mechnical machine in case of computers problems. Think I'll go shopping......

Update:

Back from the dealer (they were GREAT) and exactly as Gina says above, the motherboard had one component that failed. They took it all apart to show me and it is amazing how tiny the piece is- anyway, they will replace the motherboard within a few days and assure me it will be fine. Also got a nice loaner in the meantime!

I did express concern about the same problem happening again, and was told if there was any problem, the machine would be replaced. So I feel confident in trying the replacement motherboard.

AND, when I mentioned that my old Bernina 1010 wasn't working (reason I bought this machine), they said to bring it in when I come to pick up my machine and he will try to fix it free! It would be great to have a backup machine!

Thank you all for support and suggestions- nice to have friends who understand how important a sewing machine can be!

Oh GREAT!! I am glad you will have it fixed. Sounds to me like you have a great Janome Dealer. Did you get any sleep last night??? I would have worried about it.

sahm4605 11-09-2010 11:12 AM

OHHHH!!! I am soooo happy for you. when I read what had happened my first thought was the motherboard was bad and was needing to be replaced. (hubby works with computers for work) I am sooo excited that your dealer is such a nice guy. giving you a loaner while you wait to get yours fixed and fixing your bernina for free. that is just wonderful!!! now lets just hope that he does a wonderful job of fixing everything.

Jo Mama 11-09-2010 11:14 AM

That's great. And to get a loaner is very nice. Glad you are getting the results you needed.

RkayD 11-09-2010 11:23 AM

Oh No!! So sorry for you. I hate being without my babies even when they go for service. Hoping for a speedy recovery and simple fix. =)

sewNso 11-09-2010 11:34 AM

peggi mentioned the janome 6700. i haven't heard of that one. i looked at the 7700 when i took my 6600 in for maintence, and it scared me, just looking at it. but, i did learn a couple more features about my 6600 while i was in the shop. does anyone remember seeing a link of janome owners learning something different about their machine each week? would appreciate it if anyone recalls. ordered the circle hoop for doing applique circle stitches. anyone seen that?

Marvlin 11-09-2010 11:42 AM

Are you the first owner of this machine? If you are the first owner you should be covered under a manufacturers warranty but replacement is up to your dealer as a rule. If you bought this machine from a dealer and not the first owner there should be some kind of warranty, especially since you have only had "her" for four months. I would be very careful about accepting a "fix" without the dealership giving you in writing a stated warranty for this machine. I wish you all the luck in the world with your lovely machine. I finally got my Designer I back after having her in the dealer's shop for nearly a year waiting for parts. I have her home now but this morning the bobbin winding mechanism broke and has locked up my machine again. Goodness, seems like the little darlings pick bad times to "get sick" on us.

kwhite 11-09-2010 11:52 AM

I am so glad you got this fixed without trouble.

sandyo 11-09-2010 01:49 PM

Glad everything is going well. I now have a non computerized backup after all my Pfaff problems. When you sew a lot it is hard to be without a machine.

 Good for you -- I just bought my 5th Janome at the Houston International Quilt show this past weekend -- I have me a collection going on -- lol.

Did a bit of FMQ today, no problems, went to the ironing board for a few minutes, and noticed an icky "hot" smell- wasn't the iron- looked at my machine and the electronic screen was blank. Deep breath, turned it off, then on, and got an E4 error message, which according to the manual indicates a problem with the circuit and to bring it in for service.

I am going to bring it in in the morning- too late to go today- when I talked with them they said they had no idea what could be wrong, but sounds like the electronics are shot. From the smell, I think that is right. The machine is plugged into it's own surge protector, no lighting or power interruptions here....

So I just don't know what to expect tomorrow. The dealer is a well established one with a very good reputation, but I don't know if they will replace this machine or will I be in for a long stretch of ordering parts etc.? And how comfortable would you be with this machine being repaired instead of replaced?

Sorry this is so long, but I guess I am a little freaked out ...thanks for listening!

I had that happen with a monitor at work. It showed scary colors like looking into the bowels of Hell. Talk about freaking out! I ran for help to the only other person then in the office -- an attorney. In spite of attorney jokes (How many attorneys does it take to change a light bulb, etc.) he marched in and unplugged it.

keep us posted on how you make out. hoping for the best for you!

grannypat7925 11-09-2010 03:23 PM

If you bought it new in July, it surely has a warranty and will be fixed or replaced. Good luck. Sorry you are having to go thru this but it will probably work out just fine in the end.

Ann K 11-09-2010 03:45 PM

WOW....I would not go for repairs and this machine is new and for this to happen is a bad sign. Hang in there and push for a new one, free of charge, of course!!!

Good Luck....

I feel so sad for you. My Pfaff had it's motherboard go out last winter. Took 5 months of waiting for the part. Of course the warrenty had run out, so it was $335. that is a lot of fabric I couldn't buy.

jdavis 11-09-2010 04:16 PM

If it is to be repaired, I certainly would expect that it was under warranty, or is that just wishful thinking?

Ladybug 1938 11-09-2010 04:37 PM

Sorry to hear this happened to you, please let us know what you found out..

missionslady 11-09-2010 05:38 PM

So sorry to hear about your misfortune. I suppose that could happen with any brand. As new as it is and still under warranty, I feel sure they would replace it. If not, I would sure request that they do as you bought it in good faith, and sounds like you did everything right. Please keep us posted on what happens!

earthwalker 11-09-2010 05:43 PM

So glad it worked out for you...and you will have a spare in case of future dramas (let's hope you won't need it!). Love it when dealers/suppliers have great after sales service.

knlsmith 11-09-2010 05:50 PM

What a great ending to a scary situation! I love my Janome dealer and my janome machines!! I am sooooo happy for you.

seamstome 11-09-2010 06:16 PM

So in the end are you saying that you had one smoking hot mother(board)???? ;)

Glad it is working out.

Leota 11-09-2010 06:19 PM

If you bought it new in July, it should still be under warranty. They should replace the machine without question.

It is just a freakish thing that happened. My computer hard drive went out in 2 months, been over a year now and no trouble. Many years ago we bought a new car, the starter went out in 2 weeks.

I'm sure that your dealer will take good care of you.

madamekelly 11-09-2010 07:19 PM

I hope you have some kind of warranty on it since it is less than a year old. Sewing machines are never dead in less than a year! I would insist on a new one. Who knows what also 'fried', I would be firm but persistant until they make me happy! You spent a small fortune on that machine, and have a right to own a new machine, not a refurbished, which is what you will have if they 'fix' it. If they insist on fixing it, I would ask for a discount, commensurate with the cost of a refurbished machine. Do your homework tonight before you take it in tomorrow. I would go to the Janome web site, and see what kind of warranty you got with your machine. I would walk into the shop with 'all of my ducks' lined up. I wish you the best! {HUGS} If that happened to my new machine, I would probably have a 'hissy-fit', then get busy!

Hi, I too have Janome machies, three of them. Bought my 8000 back in 1990, it diede in 2004, sent to to the factory 3 times, they never fixed the problem. Son, Jim bought me a 9000 in 2005 , this morning it died. I went ot embroider, it took 2 stitches and died. Will not turn on at all. I also have a Janome Gold. I love them all. But will be lost without my embroider machine. I am 76 and sew almost every day, make quilts for charity.

I just want to welcome you to this site. It really is wonderful, and you will meet a whole family of people who share your love for quilting. I feel so sad about what happened with your machines. I have a 2 Viking machines, an old 940 that is a jewel, and a Rose which does more basic embroidery, but I love it. I also have a 2 yr. old Janome Threadbanger 30 that I take to class, and I like it too. Your 2005 Janome is fairly new to call it quits. Perhaps it can be repaired fairly reasonably. But if it can't, another thought is to consider buying one used. My Viking Rose was a pre-loved machine that I bought when the owner traded up. I've had it for 10 years now without the first problem, and I sew a lot! I bet you make beautiful quilts, and it is wonderful that you make them for Charity. I pray that God will bless you with another machine so that you can continue doing what you love!

so sorry to hear this and you are lucky there was not a fire i cant believe that it is only4 months old and this happened, i would request a new machine telling the dealer that would make you more comfortable than using a machine that had such a problem thinking it could happen again

Hi, thanks for writing. I love to sew always have. I started quilting with my mom when I was five years old. We of course hand quilted. She did have a treadle machine, which I now have. I make quilts for a group who gives them to shelters, World Relief and for people who are homeless. Also make them for an Evangelist in Montana who gives them to kids at CHristmas. I do take time every Wednesday to work at our local food pantry. I have been looking on this site for several years but after reading about the ladies Janome burning decided to join. I love communicating with other quilters.

chiaraquilts, I'm so happy that you have a good dealer. I have to drive 200 miles to have my Janome worked on. I hope he can fix your other machine and then you will have a backup.

Sounds like something that happened to me once....brand new pickup truck; on my way to the drug store for something for my sick son; transmission "went"....less than 900 miles on the vehicle. Luckily I was only about a block from home.
