I have had my Singer scissors for years, since high school sewing classes in the 60's also Gingher are good.

I have a set of Dovo scissors which belonged to my grandmother. She passed away in 1983 in her middle 90's. The ones that she used most have all the gold worn off the handles. But they have never been sharpened and still cut like they were brand new. My large scissors are Ginghers but are lightweight...the heavy ones hurt my hands.

foxxigrani 04-05-2010 05:29 AM

I would love to have a pair of Ginghers, but I bought a pair of Fiskers about 30 yrs ago when I bought my machine, have used them for everything that I have done. Granted I am not a sewer, but I have never had them sharpened and did do some sewing yrs ago. Now of course all quilting so you don't use scissors much.

I just go down when they get dull and buy the cheapy ones and Joanns. I have them all over the house on those things you can put around your neck so when I sew they are right there. I do have a pair of finger nail scissors that I love, now they are sharp, but got them for free and use them also for Applique. I see a lot agree with me, good luck.

GINGHER is the way to go - You'll have it forever! Just don't cut paper!! Happy Cutting!!

I am a Fiskars Girl---I have the soft touch handle ones and I love them. They are sharp, and very easy on my hands. I love that I can get my whole hand inside the handles. I have 3 pair, one for the ironing board, one at the cutting table and one at my sewing desk. I bought the sharpener for them and have only had to use it once on each one.

about 25 years ago I bought a pair of Ginghers - back then for a purchase like that I had to save a bit and I was so thrilled with them, later that day I came downstairs to find my 2 children had taken them out of the box and were cutting an aluminum can with them. I thought they would be ruined before I even had a chance to use them but to my surprise they were fine and I have been using them ever since. I've had them sharpened once and they still cut like new. My nippers are Mundial and they are great

OMG, Katie...an aluminum can?? What would have possessed them to try that? Wow, I practically killed my kids when they used my good scissors to cut paper. LOL

Thread Lady 04-05-2010 06:37 AM

I've used the Ginghers for years and have had them sharpened only rarely. Recently I won a "bag of goodies" at quilt guild which included a pair of scissors from Fons & Porter. I was skeptical, but I really like them and they cut all the way to the tip and more easily than the Ginghers! There was also a Fons & Porter rotary cutter in the bag which I am also really enjoying. It is the type that the blade comes out when you press down on it so there is no "opening and closing" of a guard to protect the blade and the user.

memephyl 04-05-2010 06:53 AM

I like my Mundial, bought a set of three 20 years ago and still use them. The screw fell out of one pair and I notified the company, to see if they would replace screw, but they sent a whole new pair instead. Wonderful to deal with. I had Fiskars and I agree they don't last and Ginghars are too heavy for me.

Janette 04-05-2010 07:05 AM

Plus, if you buy Ginghers you can send them back for sharpening. It used to cost $15. Don't take them to Jo-Anns to the "scissor man." They'll be ruined. I've had mine at least 20 years and they're still great scissors, especially for left-handers.

HIBISCUS 04-05-2010 07:25 AM

I love my Ginghers, but I love my Fiskars, too. I was fortunate to inherit a batch of scissors from a friend that died a couple years ago, and have 2 of many sizes of Ginghers from tiny embroidery to dressmaking shears, but also the Fiskars he used, along with a Fiskars sharpener! So I can use both for whatever I'm doing and almost always get a nice clean cut. Lucky me!!!

Actually, I have read that you can do a quick sharpening of scissors by folding aluminum foil several times and cutting through it. I might try this on a pair I don't really care for to see if it works before using it on my favorite pair.

bstanbro 04-05-2010 07:39 AM

No question. Ginghers. I have some large scissors for cutting fabric, small ones for cutting thread, and a sort of "nipper" that my mother gave me more than 40 years ago. They are still sharp as can be.

flflower 04-05-2010 07:56 AM

i love my ginghers

jamsbuying 04-05-2010 07:57 AM

Love my Ginghers!!! And, I've bought Ginghers as gifts. Great scissors.

Quilt4u 04-05-2010 07:58 AM

Ginghers for me.

sylvia77 04-05-2010 08:05 AM

I have a pair of Fiskars for paper cutting and for fabric, nothing beats my Ginghers!

foxxigrani 04-05-2010 08:08 AM

I also heard to do that for my rotary cutter, as far as I know didn't help much, but then thought it was because I didn't hold my mouth right. lol

Chay 04-05-2010 08:57 AM

I love my Ginghers. I just found out via the Ginghers website they will sharpen them for $7.50, no shipping charge. I have a little burr on mine and intend to send them in. As for snips, these are fantastic:

http://www.voguefabricsstore.com/sto...ps-p-3117.html

They are unbelievably sharp and they cost $1.49!!!!

dlf0122quilting 04-05-2010 09:28 AM

I like the Ginghers that my MIL left me when she passed away but I must say that for me they are a little heavy. I do a lot of applique and for me, there is nothing like the Omnigrid (yellow cushioned handles) which are made by Kai or the actual Kai scissors. They stay sharp the longest and have a nice sharp point to the end for those nice tiny pieces. They have a very fine seration to them so they stay sharp forever.

billsgirl 04-05-2010 12:01 PM

I bought a set of Mundials. They have a soft cushion grip and are a delight to use! I bought them in 2000 and they still are as sharp as ever!

I recently bought 2 pairs of Clover shears. I had never heard of then until a friend said she could get them for $22.00 a pair. So I picked up 2 pair. So far I really like them. They are sharp and very light weight! I have had a pair of Ginghers for over 20 years, they are still very sharp and wonderful. The only thing I don't care for is how heavy my Ginghers are. I have Gingher, snips, pinking shears, embroidery scissors, and shears. They are great scissors. Time will tell how my Clover ones will be.

ejudy 04-05-2010 12:28 PM

I love my Ghingers. We can get them for half price thru the Extension Office, so it makes them affordable.

Troutbabe 04-05-2010 12:44 PM

I like my ginghers best, too, but have Fiscars also. They sell a little round-thing-with-ceramic-stick for sharpening Fiscars, and that helps. Also helps that my local, small town-and-has-everything hardware store has someone who picks up and delivers on sharpening saws, knives, scissors, etc. He did a really good job.

Also - I read about a woman who had an AWFUL time keeping her family out of her good sewing shears. Yelling and screaming didn't help. after all, the scissors were there by her machine, in a convenient and consistent location! SO she put her good shears in a drawer and filled the canisters with the cheap ones. Hey! The family didn't know the difference, but she did! Great idea!

SandraD 04-05-2010 01:00 PM

I tie a strip of material around the handle of mine so my family knows (and me too sometimes) that they are for fabric only - not paper!

Carol's Quilts 04-05-2010 01:37 PM

I also love my Ginghers - I have two different sizes of shears, also the pinking shears and the embroidery scissors. They are great. Also, as someone else said, any scissors made in Solingen, Germany are wonderful. I'm going to have to try the lighter-weight Clover scissors so many posters have mentioned.

Anna O 04-05-2010 02:00 PM

Ginghers are my all time favorite and I probably all of them. I like the lightweight ones the best.

Sorry for the duplicate. I hit send twice by accident.

I've had Fiskar's Soft Touch since they came out, they are the only ones I can use because of arthritis in my hands. I know I've had them ten years or more and they are still very sharp. Have never touched a piece of paper though.

I have another pair of Fiskar's, got in 1983, came with their own sharpener. I guess I run them through it once every couple of years and I even use these to cut paper. I also have the Fiskars pinking shears but they are not a favorite of mine, they will cut two layers of cotton but bind up on any more. I wouldn't recommend them.

I use the Fiskars sharpener on other less expensive shears and scissors around the house. Seems to do the trick on most of them.

I love my Ginghers, I have 3 different sizes. The 8 inch are heavy but they have been sharp for 8 years of usage.

Since I have to order on the internet anyway, which brand will last the longest and cut the best?

I have many pairs of Fiskars - spring ones with the soft handle are my favorite. I stock up with coupons and when they are on sale. My Ginghers are much too heavy. You will need a sharp pair of curved scissors - good for cutting threads without cutting the fabric - I use them while hand quilting. I recently bought a pair of scissors bonded with titanium - they are very sharp and work very well. Whatever you choose, make sure they are the "right fit" for you. Good luck.

pflum1 04-05-2010 03:42 PM

I like Professor KIA scissors. They stay sharp and last forever. I have several pairs of Gingher and they are nice, but nothing like the KIA. You can order them on-line.

martha jo 04-05-2010 03:46 PM

I have every size of Ginghers including the clippers and love them. Mine are from the 70's and 80's and were made in Germany. I have noticed some lately made in other countries, don't know if they are as good or not.

Merrilin 04-05-2010 03:53 PM

I have 2 pair of Fiskars that i have had for 15 yrs. And I just barely sent them to be sharped. I don't buy any other kind

galvestonangel 04-05-2010 04:07 PM

I have several gingher, including a light weight pair, and I have been happy with them. I was just given a pair of small Clover scissors with a serrated edge and I love them. I love the serrated edge so much, I found a dressmaker size Gingher with the serrated edge. You can not see the serrated edge but you can feel it. It grips the fabric so it does not shift on you.

suedonnie 04-05-2010 04:26 PM

I have had no problem with ginghers. Had them sharpened 1 time since I purchased them 15 years ago. And the only reason I had them sharpened then was I was in a class at the dealers and since I had my scissers I figured why not! that was 6 years ago.

NewYearsOld 04-05-2010 04:45 PM

I have had my Ginghers since 7th grade Home-Ec. That has been 39 years ago. :) I love my Ginghers, and they have only been sharpened 2, maybe 3 times. That is all I have ever had and ever needed! Believe me, I have used them a lot!

Love my Ginghers. I have four pair, 1 pair of pinking shears and a small pair. But, like many of you have said, at times they are too heavy when my hands are aching. I need to gear towards those with springs that pop back open in order to save my thumb. At WalMart I have purchased a small grey pair with orange in the finger/thumb slots for under $7 made of titanium. My friends tell me they hold their edge really well. I also like Snip Eze Embroidery Snips. At JoAnn Fabrics they run about $18 but at my local Bernina store they are about $10. They are very light weight and spring loaded. Only should be used on threads though. I have found that I can get really close to where I want to snip the thread. Linda
