No jokes like - sharp ones.
I have purchased enough scissors to have bought a good pair. No more. Fiskars don't last very long. Which brand is sharp from tip to hinge and can be sharpened when they get a little dull? I also need to know about snippers. Threads drive me crazy. A long time ago, women didn't get a new pair a year or even several years. I can't get my scissors to last 3 months. Since I have to order on the internet anyway, which brand will last the longest and cut the best? |
I will be looking forward to see others answers on this thread.
I buy my scissors at Joann's and use the coupon. |
I just keep going to Dollar tree and buying the $1.00 Scissors they work as long as I don;t forget and use them on paper!
|
Love my ginghers. Have had them over 20 years and never had them sharpened!! I have threatened family members if they ever pick them up and especially if they have paper in their hands!!!
|
I agree- ginghers!
|
If you don't want horribly expensive go with Ginghers. Dovo, Bohin, and any scissors made in Solingen Germany are excellent scissors.
|
Okay, I bought Ginghers. ebay had them cheaper than the stores, even with shipping. There is no frustration so heavy as a quilter without sharp scissors. And no furry than their mother if they are caught using them - ever.
I got a lot of mixed up scissor for $15.00 for the kids to use. They had better leave mine alone. |

Good idea.

I bought a package of Fiskars office scissors at Sam's Club and they beat the Fiskars quilting/sewing scissors by a mile. They are still sharp to cut fabric like butter and I use them to cut everything from plastic to cording. I think Fanmore and Clover has the sharpest scissors. Clover scissors are better then Gingher in my opinion. Clover scissors are getting a great reputation.
|
I absolutely love my Ginghers. They are the first expensive pair of scissors I have ever owned, and every time I use them I marvel at how wonderful they are. Okay, so I lead a boring life - they are still great!
|
Ginghers are great but so heavy. I don't use mine that often. I have a couple of pairs of the Fiskers razor edge scissors (with gray handles) and they are great. Both pairs are more than ten years old. I get them sharpened every few years and they are good to go. I couldn't do without them.
|
I have a pair of 5" Ginghers that I use exclusively. Just got them sharpened again. The large Ginghers while sharp are too heavy and with my weak wrists are not a good match - but the little ones.....slicing heaven.
|
I asked the same question recently and hear is the responses I received. I still haven't purchased any for my Website. The budget is tight this month!
I hope this helps... http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-39822-1.htm Harry B. |
I love my Ginghers
|
I have several pair of Ginghers...wouldn't use anything else and don't let anyone cut anything other than fabric with them..actually, I am a BIT picky about anyone else using them. I have had them at least 20 years and never had to have them sharpened. I keep several other pair of scissors available for paper.

I have Ginghers, Kai's, and Havels.
The shears I use most are the Kai Cutlery brand. I've had them for 10+ years and never have had to have them sharpened. The Ginghers are also very good. I have the Havel curved blade Snip-Eze snippers. I use these constantly and absolutely love them. I really believe in investing in good tools. They make all the difference. |
I bought a pair at Hancock's, Mundial brand I think. They were around $30? They're very good, though I hardly ever use them at all! I rely very much on my small Fiskars, so unless I take up sewing and cut a lot of fabric with scissors, I wouldn't spend TOO much.

The 5" Gingher crafts are perfect for many uses. A better fit and very versatile. I do love the Ginghers, but the big ones are heavy! They do have a light weight line, but I don't know anyone who has tried them. |
I have several pair of Ginghers (gifts) and they are very good scissors but too heavy for me. I don't need big scissors for 95% of my quilting so the smaller Clover scissors are perfect. I like Mondial scissors. I really think I have every brand! Kai, Singer, Gingher, Clover, Fiskars, Fons and Porter, Mondial, Fanmore, EZ, Hertiage Cutlery, and some with no brand name. When in doubt get MOM some scissors for her Christmas stocking, seems to be the motto around here.

Harry: All budgets are tight right now. Hang in there, things can only improve. Keep stitchin' Gwyn

I LOVE my Ginghers. I bought my big ones at Hancocks on a half off sale. The little bird looking pair came in a box of sewing things I bought on an auction for $2 !!! Boy was I thrilled at that find. DD and DH know that they don't touch them under any circumstances.

My dear MIL got me a pair of Ginghers almost 20 years ago. Still wonderfully sharp, cut fabric like a hot knife through butter. Love them.
|
Gingher scissors are worth the money and you can get good prices using Joann's coupons or buying on ebay.
|
Years ago (starting early 1960s) I had a pair of Singer brand scissors that were good until they got lost in one of our moves back in the late 70s early 80s. Never had them sharpened at all.
Do they still even do scissors? The ones I like now are the gray handled Fiskars razor edge scissors. Only problem I have with them is people running off with them and not returning them and I can't get anybody to 'fessup'! |
I got a set of Ginghers years ago and they came with a whetstone which is great for touching up the knife edge. I don't think you would ever need to have them sharpened.
My set came with the 8" shears, 4" and the small embroidery scissors. I love the 4" so much I bought another pair recently and I keep one pair by the machine and the other on the ironing board. I think you would love them, but definitely try the different sizes before you buy. :D |
My favorites are my sharp pointed Singer scissors....dropped them once and tried to catch them and speared my finger right on the knuckle.....won't do that again....and my bigger Westcot scissors.
|
I have 2 pair of Ginghers. I had to buy the second pair because the kids and the husband got after the first pair. I also have some fiskars which are fine for some things. The German made ones are so nice.
|
I have 2 pair of Ginghers that I love. I try to keep them out of sight when I'm not using them so they won't be picked up and used for anything but fabric. I got mine from Ebay.
|
I love Ginghers.. but the big ones are too heavy to use much when my hands are acting up.. or will make them flare up. (probably have RA).. I did get a pair years ago of ginghers that had Nylon (I believe that's right) handles and the ginghers blades in them.. they were good.. but the handles would flex some when you cut heavy fabric. I'm still looking for something easier to use that put less stress on the hand joints.
|
I also really like the Elan scissors. They have serrated edges and are fabulous for slippery fabrics. I got them at an LQS.
|
I have a couple of pairs of Henckels scissors in different sizes. They have different qualities too, I have the more expensive ones (well, 50 bucks for scissors is expensive to me, anyway) and wouldn't trade them for the world. I have a pair of Friskars from years ago, but I find that they are stiff and the handle is less comfy... although they DO cut well.

I love my Dovo. They are the sharpest and most comfortable. These are used for applique and hand sewing.
I also have several pair of Fiskars, for paper cutting. They can be sharpened and cut better after sharpened. My four pair of Ginger scissors seldon get used after using Dovo. |
Prehaps I am an exception, but I have had the same pair of Fiskars from when they first came out, I think that was over thirty years ago and the last time I used them about ten years ago they were still sharp. When I began quilting, I dug out my little Fiskars embroidery scissors from well over 25 years ago and they are still amazingly sharp. Our Extension Agent borrowed them a couple of weeks ago and was surprised at how sharp they were.
I once stopped dating a guy because he was going to use my sewing scissors on paper. Fiskars are the only scissors I ever use or have used for the past 30 or so years. I have never had to have a pair sharpened. I bought my first pair when I was making all my own clothes and of course they did cut through patterns, but I still have that first pair. When I bought them they were rather pricey for my budget, but in retrospect they were well worth the price. |
I bought a pair of Kai shears and small thread snips and wouldn't trade them for anything. I love them!
|
wow, gwen, what are you cutting??? my fiskar's (8" and 4" snips) have lasted my about 5 years now, i couldn't function without them and they have held up well. I have one pair of the small 4" ones which my dog got ahold of and chewed the 'rubber' handles, they still cut just fine, hate to get rid of them but the handles aren't so great to hold anymore...
fiskars are guaranteed, if you got (lemons) i would contact them, they really should last you years of good fabric cutting. |

I have a ginghers which I have used for years without sharpening. I also have a pair of Clover scissors that have a cover - perfect for classes and traveling. I got those on the Real Women Quilt website.
