Scissors recommendation please~

Do you have a brand of scissors that you love? If so which ones? I haven't purchased a pair in many, many years and was wondering what is good out there!

TIA-

I love Ginghers...I have a couple of pairs... bent shears and curved embroidery. They keep their edge longer than most and they can be resharpened when necessary. I have another pair that I got for Christmas my first year in high school..many, many years ago and they are still in very good shape. I also use Fiskars because I have tendonitis in my thumbs and I like the spring action of them if I'm doing a lot of fashion sewing. If cutting straight lines for blocks, I use my rotary cutter.

gailinva 02-14-2012 05:13 AM

For applique and other hand sewing I love my Ginghers (4" with leather sheath). My pair is about 15 years old and have never had them sharpened. I don't like the larger all metal scissors as they tend to be heavy, My fave larger scissors are the Fiskars soft touch, makes cutting very easy (I have many pairs of large scissors, but I always grab these). Get the best you can afford, they will last forever. And ONLY use them for fabric.

kateyb 02-14-2012 05:18 AM

I think Gingers. My husband bought me a set 30 years ago and they are still great.

gingerd 02-14-2012 05:20 AM

I do have the small snip Gingher's. I like those. I haven't looked at their larger scissors. Maybe I'll start there and see what they offer.

Thanks much!

Absolutely LOVE Karen Kay Buckley's Perfect Scissors! Slightly serrated edges grip fabric. Flexible handles. Available in two sizes from her website or Google to find elsewhere....some LQSs have them also.

annthreecats 02-14-2012 05:37 AM

I have one pair of Ginghers. They have animal print handles (I bought them after I acquired my two kitties) and they are wonderful. I only use them once in a while because they are so pretty. I like to just look at them. Mostly I also have several pair of Fiskars that I use regularly.

knlsmith 02-14-2012 05:40 AM

Ginghers. And you can get them on sale eith coupons at Joanns.

booklady1952 02-14-2012 06:06 AM

Diitto on the Ginghers. They're well worth in investment. I've even been pleased after having my shears sharpened several times.

CarrieC 02-14-2012 06:09 AM

WHEW - I'm relieved to see that just about everyone else has what I have. Ginghers and and Fiskars. I love my Ginghers and they are one of my most prized tools. My Fiskars are good work horses too.

Do wait for a Joann's coupon OR when the scissors go on sale. You can pick them up for a reasonable price!

I also have the 4" Ginghers with the leather sheath and the Soft Touch Fiskars. Love them both. I use surgical snips for cutting threads and ripping seams.

Mazda 02-14-2012 06:25 AM

Mine are Ginghers.

Scissor Queen 02-14-2012 08:14 AM

Ginghers, Elan, Bohin, and anything Solingen. Mundial and Fiskars are okay if that's all you can get. They're sharp but dull faster than the higher quality scissors.

BellaBoo 02-14-2012 08:34 AM

I have a lot of scissors, all brands. The more scissors I have the longer each one stays newer and sharp. I just bought a new pair that are very good. Karen Kay Buckley 7-1/2-Inch Perfect Scissors. I have a pair of Dovo
Solingen that I want to be buried with! I put a pair of Gingher scissors in the desk drawer and in the kitchen. No one bothers to find the good scissors in my sewing room any more. LOL.

irishrose 02-14-2012 08:43 AM

Gingher lightweight scissors. Black plastic that cut better than regular Ginghers for me. In the $20 range at JoAnn's so they are $12 with a coupon.

dunster 02-14-2012 08:53 AM

Kai scissors are wonderful, and less expensive than some of the other brands. I bought a bunch of different types online, soon after I started quilting, on the recommendation of several friends who loved theirs. Recently I have seen them at several quilt shows.

Ginghers!!! I still use the pair I was given 25 years ago and they are the best. The 8" ones are what I have. You can find some great deals on ebay.

Christine George 02-14-2012 10:11 AM

And I'm the cheapskate of the bunch. Walmart sells scissors in packages of 2. One for the kitchen and one for the sewing room. I do, however, spend money on rotary blades. I guess we all have our priorities.

nativetexan 02-14-2012 10:21 AM

yep, my orange handled Ginghers are great. had them for years!!!

gingerd 02-14-2012 10:29 AM

Thanks ladies!! I'll watch for a JoAnn's coupon and see what they have.

Ginger

butterfly48 02-14-2012 11:14 AM

I like my KAI the best, you can order off th.e lnternet. I have the ginger but they are too heavy

BellaBoo 02-14-2012 11:28 AM

Hancock's Fabric use to have the KAI scissors. When they closed shop here and had the going out of business sale I bought a package set of small kai scissors. They are good scissors especially for detail cuts. I bought the Gingher and mondial scissors sets there too on the last day of the sale for 90% off! The owner was so mad at Hancock's he was practically giving notions away. The fabric that was not sold had to doused with black oil so no one could use it. That was Hancock's Fabric rule. How terrible to know the company would rather ruin the fabric instead of donating. May have been less of a tax deduction but so much more decent. I think about the hundreds of bolts being ruined whenever I go in one of the stores now.

I love Havel's.

annies-best 02-14-2012 11:39 AM

WOW so many recommendations for Ginghers i will have to try them i have a whole drawer full of dull scissors. I have several friskars but they have dulled over the years they use to say free sharpning for life I checked the web site and they don't do that any longer.
thanks for the thread

luvTooQuilt 02-14-2012 11:47 AM

Im a Gingher gal... and I use my fiskars for cutting paper, Insulbrite and Fusible- 2 different brands-that way i dont use my good scissors

fairydawn 02-14-2012 01:17 PM

Have 4 different types of Ginghers and love them all. Use Joann coupon to save!

erstan947 02-14-2012 01:19 PM

I have used Ginghers for years. I recently got 3 styles of Kai brand. I love them. Can be found at www.kaiscissors.com

SuzanneG 02-14-2012 01:33 PM

Other than my little scissors (which are shaped like a crane) that I keep by my machine, I rarely use scissors in my quilt room, so I'm not motivated to buy an expensive pair. So I have a good, but not terribly pricey pair of 8" Fiskars that I use only for fabric and they've stayed sharp and done a great job for over 5 years now without needing sharpened. I don't know what the brand is on the little pair, but they were a gift from my mom when I started quilting, so they are priceless to me. :)

caspharm 02-14-2012 01:47 PM

I have mainly Ginghers, a couple of Clovers, some Dovo (for applique), and some Fiskars for paper. I also have some Havels and a pair of Kais.

117becca 02-14-2012 02:59 PM

I'm also a Gingher gal!! I've had mine for a very long time. The last time I was at a quilt show, they had scissor sharpening and I had them done. Hard to find someone to sharpen scissors well!

lfletcher 02-15-2012 05:22 AM

I have Gingher and Kai scissors and actually like them both, but if I have to pick a favorite, I would go with Kai.

Fabriclovr 02-15-2012 05:26 AM

gingher! All the rest are crap! My rotary cutter is even a gingher!

Quilt-Till-U-Wilt 02-15-2012 05:34 AM

Fiskars for my large scissors and Ginghers for my small hand sewing scissors.

dd 02-15-2012 05:37 AM

I really like my Fiskars with the spring action but I also have pair that my father bought in the hardware section at Walmart. They are a little heavier but they are great. They are Rubbermaid and have a little seration. They are great for cutting thin fabric that wants to run away or heavier fabric. I was just happy that my father thought of me for once.

gingerd 02-15-2012 05:59 AM

Gosh ladies.......choices, choices......it's like being in an ice cream store!!

SUZAG 02-15-2012 06:51 AM

My favorite go to scissors are made by Fiskers and I don't think you will find them in the fabric store...I found them in the lawn and garden department of Home Depot. They have a serrated blade with the traditional orange Fiskers handle and they cut like butter...

psychonurse 02-16-2012 04:29 AM

I have had my Ginghers, several pairs, more than 15 yrs and have not had them sharpened. When that time comes, I will send them back to the office to do so. I also have a left handed gingher rotary cutter.
I do own a pair of Fiskars sissors, left handed, that I use reguarly.
Love them all.

grann of 6 02-16-2012 04:38 AM

Well, unlike everyone else, I have the Fiskars Titanium blade scissors (or shears) with the spring handle. I have arthritis in my wrist and hand and find I can't use a regular scissors any more. I get terrible cramps in my fingers The Fiskars have a hand hole instead of thumb and finger holes. My wrist doesn't bend so I find the angle of these is perfect for my hand. We all have to find what works for us.

Anna O 02-16-2012 04:39 AM

I've "wasted" a lot of money on a lot of brands. Gingher is the only way to go!

simpsonfs 02-16-2012 05:15 AM

I bought a pair of KAI scissors from the Houston Quilt show a couple of years ago....wonderful....could get left handed ones. They have a line of scissors... a little pricy....but wonderful.
