Hi to everyone - I am new to the board and have been going through all the wonderful comments. My question is this - I do a lot of applique and have several scissors but none that I just love for the small cuts (sharp points) and that is comfortable for a lengthy period of time. Does anyone have just a good favorite for applique?
Thanks for all your help in advance!
Deb

Hi Deb! No advise here but I want to welcome you to the board !!! :D:D

TonnieLoree 03-31-2011 04:13 PM

Welcome to the board. I do not applique, so I can't offer any help to you there. I'm sure others will chime in here with just the answer you need. Keep posting!

lhavelka 03-31-2011 04:14 PM

I am interested in it too!!!!!

Welcome! Good question. I have a pair of super sharp Fiskars snips with rubbery, spring-loaded handles. Verycomfortable. Only drawback is that they are so sharp as to be a bit dangerous and it's too easily to cut what you don't intend to cut.

jaciqltznok 03-31-2011 04:38 PM

Gingher 3" and Havel's curved

susie-susie-susie 03-31-2011 05:34 PM

I have a pair of Fiskars titanium that are very sharp all the way to the tip. They are small. I also have a small pair that I bought at the LQS but I don't know the name. They are almost like nail scissors.

Thanks for all the information!

jdiane318 03-31-2011 06:27 PM

I agree with the Ginghers's but I also know that Easy Kut makes a spring action scissor with a curved blade for easier cutting and they also have foam grips. Very sharp.

I have a pair of the 4 inch Elan that I use to cut out fusible applique shapes. They're serrated and cut down on edge fraying.

Those Havel's can get into all the right places and being a "squeeze and snip" action scissor, they are super easy on the old hands!

Tilladare 03-31-2011 07:35 PM

Where do you find Havel's? I have yet to run into them, but they sound like something I should look into

A big welcome from East Texas.

raggedyann 03-31-2011 09:16 PM

i like the small elan ones for machine applique...

Painiacs 03-31-2011 09:27 PM

I use embroidery scissors!

quiltbuddy 04-01-2011 03:37 AM

Karen Kay Buckley has the best scissors. They are micro-serrated which means that it grabs the fabric instead of pushing away as you are cutting. Karen is an accomplished applique quilter. I'm not good at computers but she has a blog and online store.

angiecub 04-01-2011 03:39 AM

I have a pair of the small fiskars spring action scissors with very sharp, small tips. I even use them as a seam ripper. Get them at Joann's when they are 50% off or when you have a coupon, and you can get them for under $10.

winia 04-01-2011 04:09 AM

For close work like applique and just intricate cutting, including
ripping out, I have found a manicure scissor with the curved
scissor part is wonderful. It is very, very sharp and can be
put in small spaces to cut thread because the scissor part is
so sharp and small.

I use the 6" micro tip Fiskars. Love them. I have the Gingers also, but don't like as much as heavier and the finger holes don't have any padding and fingers get really sore. I've even put bandaids around the finger holes to soften them up and really didn't work well.

Got a one of her small scissors and they are GREAT! I love the micro serrated edge. I like them so much have considered getting the larger one but her larger scissor one is just too large in my opinion. I sure wish she had a "middle" sized one available.

I have some curved Elan scissors which are particularly good and some Solignen embroidery scissors which do the trick. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of a little pair of scissors that my grandmother gave me - which are the best. I saw ones which looked the same for sale in a scissor shop window about 10years ago and they were $80 then...My gran was not rich, so I imagined she saved for a while to get them for me.

I use these scissors for just about everything!! They belonged to my ex husbands grandmother who passed away in 1983 at the age of 97. So they are well over a 100 years old. They are a matched set from 3 to 6 inches and are super sharp! The leather case is stained and the silk lining is in shreds but nothing wrong with the scissors. You can tell which ones she used most because a lot of the gold detailing on the handles has worn away. The blades say Solingen, Germany on them. I inherited them and her handmade oak quilting frame because I was the only one in the family who quilted.

very old German scissors

I do a lot of applique. The scissors I have for sharp points 4" Kai, Omnigrid and Dovo. The Dovo scissors run about $35 but the other two are about $14 I believe.

Here's the Elan serrated scissors. This is about the best price I've seen for them. <http://www.hancocks-paducah.com/Item--i-E-4>

I ordered some Karen Kay Buckley scissors. The reviews are very good so I thought I'd give them a try.

Welcome from the TX Hill Country - I have a sm. pair of Gingher about 3 1/2" long w/very sharp points that are in a sm. leather case. They were given to me by a quilt guild many years ago when I had to move to another city. I also use them at my quilt frame & really love them - they aren't in the way, & slip quickly back into the little case between uses.

I only joined the board about a week ago & LOVE all the great ideas & tips these wonderful people are always eager to share.

Have a blessed day & may all your quilts be filled w/love.

Welcome Deb. I love to applique and I have a 3 and 1/2 inch Havel, 30140. It has slightly curved points, pink padded plastic on the handles. The points are very sharp and the handles are comfortable to use. Hope this works for you.

quiltinggolfer 04-01-2011 08:07 AM

I have a pair of Cutco applique scissors. They really
feel very nice but are pricey like the Ginges. (Knives are really great too!)

Beth Dishong 04-01-2011 08:28 AM

I have a small pair of Fiskars about 2" sharp clear to the end. They have rubber handles, very comfortable and can be used for long periods of time. I love them.

borntoquilt 04-01-2011 08:32 AM

Haven't read all the posts so I apologize if I am repeating info. Years ago, my needle turn applique teacher had me buy a pair of KAI (Fons & Porter brand) abt 3 1/2" scissors. They are extremely sharp, great control and really good for getting into those inner curves. I paid a whopping $12.00 for them (I thot that was really expensive!) A while back I was @ a Tuesday Morning store (they usually have odd ball sewing supplies really CHEAP!) where I found a pair of KAI scissors just like my others for $2.99. go figure! Ya never know where you're gonna find a bargain! And my motto: "buy it when ya see it! cause it's not gonna be there when u go back for it!" Have fun finding your perfect scissors!

me too - Fiskars scissors are the best for the money. If you want to go all out try Gingher duck bills made esp. for applique.

There is a new pair out by Karen Kay Buckley, it has the micro serated edge. I love my serated edge sissors, it keeps the fabric from slipping.

jad1044 04-01-2011 10:39 AM

I have a small Fiskars scissor that you can lock the handle on - and there is a spring that automatically opens the scissor when unlocked; it is very sharp, a very pointed end and it fits my hand perfectly, more control with it than a normal scissor you have to manually snip with. My hands lock up occasionally so love this one.
