I love Bonnie Hunter's website, as mentioned above. Every time I go there I want to make a differnt quilt.. I love scrappy quilts, they are my favorite.

I think the thing that makes scrap quilts too chaotic sometimes is if there isn't a light background, or at least a solid color for your eye to rest on.. if it's all just a jumble of color I find them less pleasing than if there is sashing or a background to give it some peacefulness in the midst of the scramble.

I too am a huge fan of making scrappy log cabins. I seem to have lots of scraps that are 1.5 inches wide, so its suits that type of scrap.
Take a look at the type of scraps , are they long strips, or cut off triangles, squares .. I let the shape of my scraps guide my choice of pattern, so I get the most use .

Oh - thanks. Now I know why I find MOST scrappy quilts chaotic and unappealing. I will keep that in mind if I ever decide to do one myself.

thank you. the squares are 1 inch finished so it takes me a while to get a few blocks done because I'm not very fast. But as was said with nowhere for the eyes to rest, I'm putting a solid border around the outside for something a little more calming than the overwhelming quilt.

I usually turn to a log cabin to use up my scraps. I always use a different setting, sometimes supplementing the log cabin blocks with other types of blocks, but I enjoy not having to think too hard about what pattern to make, how to cut the scraps, etc. I find if I just get started, the scrap pile stays under control, but if I think too long about what to make with them it becomes a chore and I don't get it done.
