Scrappy pattern
I have a new little grandson and I want to make a scrappy quilt that is not a childish pattern. I am elderly and I won't be around when he is an adult and I want him to have a quilt to remember me by. I want an adult pattern. I have many quilts in my home but I want to make one especially for him as I have done for all my other grandchildren. I appreciate any and all suggestions.
|
Why not choose your favorite pattern and use masculine colors of scraps?
|
Have you look on Bonnie Hunter's website for scrappy quilt??

My process when I can't decide what to do is look at every single book I have, go to the library for more, visit Pinterest and find things that appeal to me.
What kinds of quilts do you like to make? What is your very favorite quilt that you've ever made? Make another of those! You are so sweet. Good luck. |
If you are aiming to make him a quilt he will appreciate as an adult, then gearing it to his current interests, likes, etc. won't work, as those will most likely change, and it will then not be appropriate for him as an adult. Since it's impossible to predict what he will like as an adult, then I agree with the other suggestions. Make the pattern one you like and think most men would like, too. Personalize either the front or the back of the quilt with his and your names and the date you finish the quilt. He will probably love that you made it in advance just for him and cherish it no matter what he thinks of the specific pattern or colors.

When in doubt I make a Double Irish Chain!

You could make a scrappy Jacob's Ladder. I made this for a man and used warm toned fabric scraps.
|
I used Creative Grid ruler to make the Cat's Cradle. I made it very scrappy and worked up quickly. Will show a picture when I get it back from the long arm quilter.

Bonnie's quilts from recycled men's shirts would be a good choice. The fabrics would be very manly yet also appropriate for a young boy. Even better if you happen to have shirts from family members to include in the quilt.

Gorgeous quilt, JenniePenny!

Imagine you are making a quilt for his grandad or dad. Patterns they would like.

I started a scrappy star quilt as a Leader/Enders project that I saw here on the QB...it may be a BH pattern.
|
When in doubt, I make star quilts - Ohio Star or Sawtoothed Star. Maybe bright batiks on a black background? My son (age 34) still has his baby quilt which was just a rainbow of half-square triangles.

Square or Rectangle Blocks are more masculine than any blocks made with Curves or circles.. So are Stripes or Triangles and Plaids.... Flying Geese, would make a Great Quilt too. You could make them any size ... Shades of Darker Blues, rusts, brick and Brown, Taupe. and Beige, darker Greens like Forest or even a Sage Green, No Flowers in the prints. Maybe a few Creams or Golds to lighten it up. I don't care for Blacks and Grays...unless its a Amish Style Quilt. Hope this helps...Can't wait to see finished Quilt.. What a Labor of Love as a Keepsake..

A few years ago I made a bento box in browns that might fit your dilemma. You could make a log cabin in blues or browns too! Good luck dear. I'll be facing the same issue soon. Initially I made a map of the US with each state in different fabric, but the mama didn't like it. So, I'm going to keep it and hang it on a wall! Maybe even have it up for the baby shower that will be at my home in a few weeks!

I understand your question. I make baby quilts for nieces and nephews children with the same idea in mind. I make any pattern I want and use any color pattern I want. Who says that a baby quilt must be in pastels and be covered with little baby animals? Well, it can be but it there is no rule that says it must! I have made quilts that are turquoise, colors of the brown, orange, yellow pallet and others that are black/white/red. Some times the moms ask for a color choice but most just do not. Bottom line, give the beautiful gift that you wish. I like the idea of choosing a favorite pattern and bless this little one with a warm snuggle from you.
I am particular to half-square triangles, light and dark in the barn raising arrangement. HST makes a good use of scraps and can be arranged is just so many different ways! Have fun and snuggle this little boy with your quilt and get a picture of you, child and quilt together. It may be a memory maker! |

My boys like quilts with triangles or stars like the Ohio Star. The 4,5 and 6 th picture are tops made for donation and were made with Bonnie Hunter patterns.
http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/free-patterns.html I really like this pattern- http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2005/06/strip-twist.html The hedge Hog quilt I just made for my now 18 month old grandson. All the quilts posted are owned by males. No. 3 and No. 7 I made for my sons when they were little boys and they are now 16 and 14. The no. 1 quilt is owned by my 27 yr old son. |

One more that was donated US Army.

So many beautiful quilts, AnnaQuilts! The first three are my favorites. The hedgehog is adorable!

My paternal grandmother made scrappy quilts for every one of her 8 children. She did not have money to buy fabric, so everything she made was scrappy. The distinguishing design was that every quilt used blocks that pieced in the first letter of the first name. I still have my dad's quilt. I guess I have wondered if she named her kids with easy letters to piece. Three were N's. My dad's was H. The others were M,V,F, L (seems unlikely so many easy-to-piece letters would be happenstance). At any rate, I love her concept.
|
I really like the idea of QuiltsRfun about trying to use fabrics from a family member. Also, I agree with the other members as to use your favorite or easy pattern and use manly fabrics. Good Luck and I am sure your grandson will treasure the quilt you make whatever it is.
|
Wow. So beautiful. I will look up this pattern. Thank you so much.
|
My husband and I both have several quilts that were pieced by our grandmothers. All are scrappy, using simple blocks, and each is loved. My favorite scraps are the plaid and striped shirting fabrics from the 40s and 50s.
I love the idea posted above of making a scrappy quilt block pattern from the first letter of the child's name. To me, that is more timeless than the whole name. |
I really enjoy reading everyone's responses. some great ideas here. I will check later on to see if there are more ideas posted.
|
So beautiful.

I made this one for my adult son. It is done in flannel but doesn't need to be. It was fun and easy and the rectangles presented many opportunities for different quilting designs.
|
Everyone posted great ideas, & the quilts shown are beautiful! Any one of them would make a wonderful quilt for your new grandson. And I know he will cherish it, knowing that it was made by grandma with love.
|
that's a beautiful quilt.. love what you have done.
|
I see so many beautiful quilts and ideas given here- for a young child, I agree there's no way of knowing his interests coming into this life. What I do when I question what I need to make for a certain person...I pray...then I start cutting out...each quilt is unique and made specifically for that person. I hope you post pics when you decide what design this special new little one will have.
|
These are wonderful colors for a male - so bold, yet simple to look at. I'm not all dizzy with this one. Great job!
|
I think the idea of shirts from brothers, father, grandfather and uncles as well as dad would be a great idea.
|
I would just pick out scraps of 'man' colors, choose a scrappy pattern I like and make him a quilt.
Fortunately for me I make mostly Great Granddaughters quilts these days. We have three and one Great Grandson, his Mom doesn't like quilts, he only has one. I have a Granddaughter in law that loves my quilts and will take any color and any pattern I give her or make her. So that is easy. I am in the process of making a quilt for their queen size camper bed, I am hoping that is the last big one I make. |
