We did a dark and light scrappy quilt in a group I used to meet up with once a week. No one else liked their blocks so they gave them all to me. I put them all together and I love the quilt. I made a red and white border for it.

I think if you don't want to do just dark/light you can sort your scraps into color families. I am going to do the mystery quilt after Christmas like that... Have fun and show us what you end up with! :wink: :wink: :wink:

Scrappy quilts are so much fun.. You never know until you finish just what you'll have. Don't be afraid.. Just sew and enjoy the "no thought" time.. The only rule I used was I didn't use a piece that was like the last piece, and I didn't use a piece that was so close is color or scale that you couldn't tell there were two pieces of fabric..

Besides that, it's your quilt.. If you pull a piece you really don't like, toss it back.. and say, oops.. blew that one! then grab again! But don't worry about clashes, they look great in the end and give a quilt some life and joy!

Scrappy Quilts are also my favorite to make. It makes you really think about ladies years ago that set out to make quilts for there family, there were only so many pieces of fabric at a time and the color options weren't an option most if the time they just used or reused what they had. Also the time it took fir the construction of a quilt in those times, I'm sure it sometimes took years. Well enough of that I also do the pile method I think this makes it really fun constructing a quilt the truly ugly pieces always seem to just set of all the other beautiful fabric in the end!

I've made lots of scrap quilts but they all have a planed look, My avitar is one of my favorite, I'm thinking of making another one in blues and lavenders hues.

I think after the holidays I'm going to try Sue Fish's tutorial on using adding machine tape. It will give me just enough control to do my first scrappy quilt. Maybe I'll be more daring on my next one. Thanks everyone for all your ideas and help. Can't wait to get started .

I've done two 1,000 pyramid quilts as scrappies. They both came out really nice. After Christmas, I will be starting on one for a granddaughter that has black, red and gold. I just take what I get unless it matches the previous triangle that I pulled out. Just try it.

it's amazing how it all comes together. My aunt made a quilt that is "scrappy" in nature. It is a print/solid/print/solid.

I make a lot of scrappy quilts using a controlled color way.That means to use all shades of colors you want,plus a few zingers to make it glow.These string quilts have a basic color to bring it together,one with black center strip...the other gold.I've also used the paper bag method & I prefer sewing a light or dark to each other.
