I save everything. If it's 1" or larger it gets cut into strips and squares. My friend made a small log cabin border with 1" strips and it's so cute, so I want to do that someday for a wall hanging. Anything smaller than 1 gets tossed into a basket that sits on the floor by my cutting table and someday, when I have enough, I'll stuff a dog bed or something with them and give it to one of my dog owner friends. I also save bits of batting in this basket too. I hate to waste anything!

make a postage stamp quilt...After that size, I discard them...or cut them for birds to make nest..

I am almost afraid to say what I did last year(before I knew people wanted them)
For years I kept EVERYTHING, and last spring When I was off work because of necksurgery, I decided to organize my closet. I threw away 3 kitchensize trashbag full   of scraps, some as big as 10/10. I cant believe I admitted that :D |

there is an active winter square swap right now for 1 1/2" squares.. so maybe you want to sign up? It is a great size to put one through a challenge.. I love to make little pinwheel blocks out of 1 1/2" blocks as of late.. i am nuts!
|
Now aren't you glad you asked the question.
|
When I am in the piecing mood, I use scraps that size. Usually in making Pot Holders. Anything else would go too slow.
|
Please, explain a crumb quilt. I cannot envision it.

Never too small to use - have a look at Susan Carlson's website:
http://www.susancarlson.com/Welcome.html |
I'm making a postage stamp quilt right now that requires 1 1/2" pieces. I'm cheating a bit right now because I'm cutting 1 1/2" strips and sewing them together, then slicing them.
I don't have all the 4,000+ pieces already so I'm just sewing as I go, as sort of a "leader and ender" project. I also figure I can buy charm packs and get 9 pieces out of each charm. |

Strips of 3 inches or less are great for phone book quilts.
|
I keep the small stuff, just throw it all in a plastic bin and when I want to make a scrappy quit or a PP project with small pcs. I pull it out. It amazes me when I make an entire quilt of that stuff and don't even put a dent in it.

I try really hard to throw things smaller than this away, but I've found a little container to save them. Can't seem to through away even bits.

untill I joined this group I was not aware you could do some much with a little piece of material.. Now I save it ALL.... So many awesome ideas.
|
I save every single scrap unless it is way too narrow. If it's small, I still save it.

thank you
I think that is what my Gram called crazy quilts - she just kept adding fabrics until it was beautiful. We could see our old clothes, aprons, etc. They were the best quilts. None remain because they were used on our beds every night. I have one that is in shreds, my son will probably put it in the trash. |
I've been saving everything lately.
|
Being the anal retentive person that I am, I've spent the last couple of days 'organizing' my scraps (meaning cutting them into squares/rectangles) The smallest dimension I have is 1 1/2 inches. Whatever's smaller, it gets pitched

what is a "crumb quilt"? |
I make minis from 1"squares, If you don't use that size ,send them on. Those of us that make use of those oh so tiny pieces love to recieve them.
|
Depends on how small of stuff you like to work on. I won't save anything smaller than 2 1/2 inches wide.

Thank you, Scrap Happy. Wouldn't you know, this is something I've been doing for years. The first quilt I made by this method was for my daughter as she went away to college. She is now 53 years old.l Will wonders never cease?

I would suggest going to Bonnie Hunter's web site, Custom Quilting.com and checking out her scrap saver's system. See if it is anything you could use. I think it would be great if a person took the time to get it going. That's been my problem, I don't take the time to do it. But it sounds great. :-D

An old saying applies here. Scraps are in the eye of the beholder, a scrap to you may not be a scrap to me :)

What is a crumb quilt. I don't have the heart to throw scraps away unless it is to ragged with strings. I would love to start using them. Thanks
