I would make it they way Dunster suggested.

I once saw a lady demo-ing a quilt like that on Sewing with Nancy. It was called the Cotton Theory. I think her name was Betty Cotton. You could see if it shows up on Nancy's website.

Many years ago, i took a class from Ms Loeb at the Houston Quilt festival learning this technique. You do have to be careful to make all the strips the correct length as she used a sew, flip, then cut which can result in uneven blocks. She did use batting. I would have to dig out the example from my file to see if she used a square of batting or strips. As I said, It has been a Long time........;-)
