OBW is Wonderful ... until you have to decide where to put each of those hexes!!
Friday was my OBW course day. Yea, to great progress at the course. It was all so much more simpler than when you read the book! Hexes sew up fast ... and I have them all done now. Although am considering making more for a larger quilt than first planned. However, the REAL work begins now, in determining where to put them for the final verdict!!! The Virgin Fabric Completed at the Course Oh dear ... now how does one decided where every one of those hexes should be placed??????? |
That is lovely fabric for a OBW. I only have the OBW Cubed book but in that one she does offer suggestions on placement.
With yours I think I would group by color value for the most striking display of hexes. Try looking at the value of the hex only and go from darkest in one corner graduating to lightest in the opposite corner. The fabric seems to be lending itself to that. |
I'm thinking for Round Two ... that I should start with the darker ones in a corner and then fan out into the other colours, ending with the lightest over in the diagonally opposite corner.
Thoughts? Feedback? All are most welcome! |
I haven't done one but I remember that gorgeous fabric and love what you're doing!!!!!!!!!! :D:D

Re your suggestion of colour value ... how much attention do you think I should place towards the actual grouping of the colours? Thanks for the help! |

I agree with you, placing the blocks is the hardest part. I would place the blocks, walk away for a day, come back and rearrange, walk away, come back and rearrange. I just finally said, STOP, and sewed them together. Every arrangement was nice, but my DH was getting tired of it hanging there. LOL

That fabric is so pretty that it won't matter where you put the hexes. I can't wait to see it finished!
|
Looking good. Beautiful fabric.
|
WOW, that is gorgeous!!!!!
|
Looks very good....I have no useful input, I think feline fanatic's ideas are well worth pursuing..

The first one was the hardest for me. I agonized over the placement of every single hex for weeks. I arranged and rearranged. After that it was much easier, and I really didn't agonize. I would recommend that you take a photo and print it out. You will be amazed how things jump out that you didn't notice in real life. It makes it easy to see a block that really doesn't mesh with any around it. Good luck!!

beautiful..obw on my to do list oneday..

And this part is exactly why I love making these - the chance to input your own design process rather than just following a pattern. The guidelines in the book can help you get started but then it's over to you! Gai's idea of taking a pic is a good one and your eye will develop over time - good luck!

Mix the darks in...too many grouped together in one spot...
|
Your fabric is beautiful, and the hexes look great. Just experiment moving them around, and when you're tired of looking at it stop and come back a few hours later. You'll know when it's done, and remember there's no "right answer".

Thanks for the tips and hints ... yes, I did pics as per my posted pic!! :)
And said this was Round One ... I knew better than to start playing with it endlessly. So am leaving it for atleast a day. I think my mind-block on this has come because most of the ones that have been posted are more dark/jeweled and little light. Whereas mine is reverse with more lighter hexes and less of the heavyness that comes from the darks. Right now it's not flowing and needs a little more balance ... it'll come, I know!! I really do appreciate the different ideas as to how to get it looking more put together. And please ... do keep the feedback coming! :) |

forget color and arrange by value. stand back and squint or take your glasses off and look for those that stand out by value.
