Oh, Granniebj, I wish I had your problem! If we lived closer together, I'd let you shop my stash anytime! When I started quilting, I thought fat quarters were cute, so I collected them - from everywhere. We travel a lot, so my fq collection grew and grew. I finally sorted & bundled them & sold at a quilt guild garage sale. I still have a lot of fabric - some yardage, some scraps, some fqs. Oh, I'm never going to use my stash - I work in a LQS!

I'm having the same problem. Going forward, I resolve to only buy fabric that I need for the quilt I'm currently working on.

UNLESS: I find something really great and cheap like at a garage sale or rummage sale. But no new quilt shop buys unless I absolutely need it to complete a quilt.

PS: please remember this is a goal I'm striving for, not a promise!

To me, it's the funnest part and definitely takes a little time to get the hang of, matching colors and prints, values, scale. I usually buy pieces that will go together, get home and find pieces in my stash that go better. So then I have to shop and hunt for other pieces that will go with my newly orphaned pieces, and well, it's just a 'vicious' cycle that will never be broken!.....................(Thankfully!) :lol:

What I have been trying to do is pick at least one fabric from my stash each time I start a quilt. Of course this means the leftovers from the new quilt add smaller pieces to my stash. Now I need to design more scrappy clothes

And here I thought I was the only indecisive one. Thank you all for the truth about how hard it is. I am new at this and just keep buying more fabric...loving my fabrics and not being able to choose what to do. This has gone on for wks. I have fabric all over my spare bed and stacked neatly..first by colors, then by combos and still nothing. I look at magazines, patterns and just keep finding more I would like to do and I do nothing.

Oh Mona, I am right there with you. I can pick a pattern then I'm at a total loss as to picking the fabric.

Bright side is Revenge to my children if/when I die with all this mess! :twisted: :twisted:

oh my what a dilema !!! you could pick out a main fabric you love and take it to the fabric store and buy some more material that matches it with the help of a friend or someone that works there, that way you are using some stash and shopping both!! if all else fails i will take the part of the stash that is really bothering you !!!

I got to the point where my stash was so big, yet I didn't always have enough fabrics that would match up to make a quilt. A few years ago, before a quilting vacation (where we were hitting several quilt shops) I matched up lots of fabric into bundles and for those bundles that needed more matching fabrics, I cut snips off and taped them in a small notebook that I took to the quilt shops with me. I figured I was going to buy fabric anyway, why not look for fabric that would go perfectly with fabrics I already had. It was so much fun shopping for "the perfect match" for my fabrics and when I got home, I filled out all those bundles. Now I am at the point where my stash is SOOOOO big that I've resolved not to buy any new fabric unless I absolutely had to have something to finish a project I am working on. And since January, I've solely been working on my UFOs, or at least I was until I was commissioned to make a quilt!!

I love shopping for fabric and already have 3 large boxes full (just in 1 year).I tried this idea. I bought a 4x6 inch photo holder with about 20 pages. I cut 2" squares of fabric and slid them into the photo holder. I try to remember to take it with me when I go to a quilt shop so I'll remember what and what color I already have at home. This has prevented me from buying the same fabric or design over and over as I seem to drawn to bright colors rather than medium and light colors.
