I'm sitting here laughing my fool head off. I don't like white gravy but a brown gravy goes with anything. But how do you make a chocolate gravy??? That's got to be the bomb!!
BTW, here in south Louisiana, we make a brown gravy with roux OR with no flour at all. We just brown that meat slowly until we've got enough of the 'brown stuff' stuck to the pot and then we throw in our onions, bell pepper, or whatever else we want. We slowly add water or broth and let it "cook down" until we've got this awesome thick brown gravy. Yum.

girliegirl 09-01-2011 07:13 AM

the only chocolate gravy i know of is with chocolate steak and that is liver........... no thank you.

Drew 09-01-2011 07:24 AM

Saw this on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The waffle is like a cone and holds the fried chicken inside. And, yep, syrup on everything. Haven't tried it so can't knock it.

KVz 09-01-2011 08:25 AM

Interesting that we are all focused on the food and not the sewing. Is it dinnertime there? :-D

jcrow 09-01-2011 08:36 AM

I also live in Oregon and don't understand waffles and fried chicken. It sure isn't an Oregon thing! :)

jcrow 09-01-2011 08:40 AM

I just started a diet and after I read all about southern gravy, I'm ready to make mashed potatoes and gravy or bisquits and gravy.

lyndad 09-01-2011 10:06 AM

I've never tried chicken and waffles, but I bet it's good, because I like to dip my chicken in honey and that would be good over a waffle.

Just have them together, It doesn't seem like they go together but they do. Just had it for the first time recently and am in love with chicken and waffles

Many chicken and waffle restaurants have popped up in the LA area and some have been featured on the cooking channels. I don't get it but many swear by that combo.

The only thing I wanted when I was pregnant with child #1 was chicken and waffles served some collards with hot sauce.

I like mine with fried chicken and it has to be topped with honey. YUMMY.

I still make it about once a month and the boys think they are getting the best treat in the world. LOL

Wow - pigs in a blanket in the NE is a hot dog rolled up in a cresent roll and baked in the oven! And "ravioli" with mashed potato - that's pierogi: a Polish food. MUST be sauteed with onion in butter. mmmm

I'm STARVING right now!!! And for mashed potato, pasta, fried chicken and biscuits with gravy

IHOP has it on their menu now and have been pushing it in there advertisements. Seems wierd to me, too, but then how else are you going to continue to find new, fattening things on their menu (LOL).

Actually, I eat there about every other Saturday, but not for waffles and chicken.

Pigs in a blanket in Florida is link sausage wrapped in pancakes!

3incollege 09-01-2011 10:59 AM

Love it! I thought it was made up in my family, quess not.
been eating that combo for years. It's like chicken ala king.

djtanner 09-01-2011 11:36 AM

We have a fantastic place by us---Waffles with everything inside. Same thing...fresh made....not sweet....crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. Breakfast, burgers, chicken, goat cheese and wild mushrooms, desserts (mmm strawberry creme brule, smores) Its called Bruxie...the line is at least20 deep at all times...so worth the wait. (Can you tell I am carbohydrate deprived...I am dieting)

Pigs in the blankets are Polish, I think. They are meatballs with some rice mixed in and wrapped in cabbage, then boiled with tomato juice or sauce. Kinda like stuffed peppers.

I have a pattern to make a Christmas Stocking like your avatar. :)

Forty years ago I made a Christmas Stocking similar to your avatar for my daughter and my MIL. Rather than the black, I used cream brocade, with 2" lace at the top of the boot and shanked buttons to look like the old button shoes. My daughter still has hers.

You, that sounds good, but that's not what we call pigs in the blanket

We use canned biscuits, kinda roll them out a bit to flatten, then roll it around a weiner. (I'd cut the weiner in half). Put the end side against the baking sheet and bake until the biscuits are done. Yummy with mustard or anything to dip it in. I've even done the small biscuits with the little smokies. Delish! I used to fix trays of that for my grandkids when they were younger. Recently I fixed those for the set of twins that I was tutoring. They'd run to my house (I'm around the block from the school) to see what was for "treats."

teacherbailey 09-01-2011 01:24 PM

Had to check to see if you were in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama or Georgia and you're not....but Pennsylvania????? Didn't know this combo had made it up that far! And yes, Kathdavis, you put syrup on the waffles and maybe dip the spicy-coated fried chicken in it too.

Not this Oregonian. Waffles for dinner sometimes, but never the two together. Must be an east coast thing. :P

OOh yes. that is what pigs in a blanket are here. Hint: wrap a little bacon around those dogs too.

Well, I made chicken salad and heaped it on little round crispy waffles from the store....plain sliced chicken works too....added chopped lettuce. They make a kind of sandwich!

I grew up on a farm in CT and we had chicken and gravy with waffles, with crepes, with mashed potatoes, with toast points or cups... all yummy!

My grama was Lithuanian and made Pigs in Blankets with ground pork, onions, carrots and peppers with rice and rolled in cabbage leaves and then slow cooked in a fabulous tomato sauce.

I'm gettin' hungry here and I just had dinner!!!

jpthequilter 09-01-2011 06:51 PM

White gravy is also flavored with black pepper!

I've not done chicken and waffles either. Is this really the breakfast waffles, or something else. Chicken and waffle fries sounds good.

...speaking of odd meals....
My 4 kids are all in their 40's now
with kids of their own and one of my
grand daughters asked me if I "REALLY"
made backwards dinners. Her mom
told her we used to have waffle
ice cream sandwiches for dinner
sometimes which we did
.. usually during the hot summers.
She thought that was so great!

None of my kids new that I stuffed
that waffle batter with grated carrots
and grated zucchini and eggs!!

capucine 09-01-2011 07:15 PM

I am salivating just reading this post:) I love waffles with maple syrup and ice cream:):) humm but since i have been on the Dukan Diet for the last 3 months i haven't been game enough to eat carbs, the result has been very encouraging but this fried chicken and waffles sound damn good it may worth cheating a little
Bon Appetite Ladies :)

cheryl rearick 09-01-2011 08:14 PM

Those pigs in a blanket sound like Yugoslavian Sarma (cabbage rolls cooked in tomato sauce). Yummy!!

Katia 09-01-2011 10:39 PM

I thought Pigs in a blanket were just big family food. Mom used to make them and I still love them. I slice the hot dog and put cheese in it. The cheese drips out and yummy. I dip mine in mustard. I made some this summer for my grandson with the giant refrigerator biscuits and big giant hotdogs. It took two biscuits to cover them. He was in heaven. Poor child never gets hot dogs at home. My daughter hates them.

I have never understood the chicken and waffles thing either. And I love both. Just not at the same time. I guess it is not much different then having rolls with your meal. Or chicken gravy over mashed potatoes on the side with your fried chicken. I am just not much of a food mixer. My husband laughs at me when we go to our casino buffet. I get so grossed out with people that pile their plates to overflowing. They let you have more then one plate and go through the line more then once. Honest they do.

piepatch 09-02-2011 03:17 AM

I have heard about chicken and waffles forever, but have never had them. I have seen them served on the Food Network, and think they would be delicious! I think I would like waffles with chicken and gravy, but not with syrup!

alapetitechaise 09-02-2011 03:43 AM

We eat chicken and waffles,,,I did it as a child too. I guess I didn't realize it was unusual. We also eat spaghetti noodles with our chile. I had someone tell me that was weird a few weeks ago.

girliegirl 09-02-2011 04:50 AM

pigs in a blanket?? that is what us coalcrackers call stuffed cabbage!

coaldigger 09-02-2011 07:56 AM

i need a good pattern for a sailboat crib quilt. i have tried three and they have not worked.

katybob 09-02-2011 12:40 PM

I was just watching Rachel Ray's 30 Minute Meals on Food Network and she made chicken and waffles! And she lives in New York. Fried chicken and maple syrup over waffles.

vickyfortune 09-04-2011 09:58 AM

It sounds like no one has been to Roscoe's in southern California. Main course: fried chicken and waffles. Best restaurant EVER.
