Would it suit your needs???

Olivia's Grammy 04-09-2010 08:30 AM

I got all my cabinets except one from yard sales for very little money. I like my machines to sit in the cabinet. As my machines grew my DS or DH cut the hole bigger. Good luck with your search.

Lindy - I've been thinking of moving mine around so I could use more than just the floor space under the extension (I do have a storage cart on one side. I love your use of space!!!

Thanks. I don't use the cutting table because I have a taller one that allows me to stand straight. I just could not stand to have all that wasted space. I found the cubes at Craft Warehouse.

Gelswood 04-09-2010 09:28 AM

I have built ins but my friends husband bought her one similar to yours and she hates it. She said there is too much wasted space underneath and she doesn't like the machine on top.

majormom 04-09-2010 10:17 AM

I have a Koala, and for the price I paid for it, you'd think they could have provided more than two measly drawers in the thing. It has a flip up back for support when you are quilting a large quilt, but where they placed the lifter for the machine is all wrong, and less than half of the flip up back can be used to hold the quilt if you keep the machine on the lifter! If I had it to do again, I would do as 'All Thumbs' suggested and buy two sturdy church like long tables, put them back to back and then buy a small cabinet to go under for all the things you need when you sew, like needles, pins, scissors etc, etc, etc. When you're not quilting, you can place your machine, and your serger on the table side by side and really go to town!
Koala is only make of that fiber board stuff anyway. Not worth it.

cjc 04-09-2010 11:13 AM

I have that cabinet from Walmart and really like it.

Janette 04-09-2010 11:59 AM

If the cabinet is made so that your machine drops down and is level with the cabinet surface, do check to see if your machine will fit. Many years ago I bought a Bernina and matching cabinet. When I replaced the Bernina with another Bernina I naturally thought it would fit in the Bernina cabinet. Uh, uh. I ended up having to have part of the removable part of the table top sawn to fit the new machine.

dsb38327 04-09-2010 12:08 PM

I don't mind using my machine on a desktop rather than dropped into a cabinet. I had Mother and Daddy's kitchen table for years but left it behind when we downsized. I still miss it because it was the most perfect workspace I have had. Now I use my extra computer desk (no hutch). I had a glass top cut to fit it so I won't scratch the desk. It has worked perfectly and I am happy I am no longer 'wasting' it.

I was going on what money I had available and was/am willing to work around having the machine on top. My husband and his friend are crafty and can figure that problem out, if need be. I'm just happy to have a table specifically for my sewing.

What do you think? Should I do it?

I use an adjustable height table with a drawer unit on wheels for underneath. I feel I have more storage under the table. I purchased mine from IKEA! But if I had a choice between Joanns and Walmart - I would choose the Walmart - Sauder has a good reputation and I have purchased from Sauder in the past.

CRH 04-09-2010 12:41 PM

Thanks for the "heads up"!! I've been waiting for this table to go on sale. I like the idea of the flip up table for more space. The walmart one also looks good. I have an expensive cabinet similar to this with the hydraulic lift, but will purchase one of these for my second machine.

For the price of either of these two, I'm thinking it would be very serviceable!! (Especially delivered!!)

Thats how I feel too, having come from one of those fold up craft tables with the fold up legs that shook horribly if I used any speed at all. Now I actually have some "space" and if need be I can easily move it to the dining room to take advantage of that great big table.

vandeaner 04-09-2010 12:58 PM

I found a cabinet for less than $200. on overstock.com it has a hydraulic lift for 3 positions. I think this is important when you want to quilt. I had to pay another 25-35 dollars to have an acrylic insert made by, I believe it was called dream world. So far it has served me very well and been an excellent investment.

craftybear 04-09-2010 01:49 PM

Also I bought an antique piano stool and put a cushion on it.

would you want a cabinet on wheels?

I bought the same one. Absolutely love it. Mine also came with a rolling stool. It has a cushioned seat that opens for storage.

Couldn't beat the price....I think that I paid about $99. Worth that and more !!!!!!

I have a student desk from the 50s with the chair to match. Cost me $15 and it's the perfect height. I really need a cutting table- want to make my own from a luan door and drawers but no time. :(

Let us know what you buy.

yourstrulyquilts 04-09-2010 03:57 PM

No. You need one that the sewing machine can sit into so that you have the surface of the table level with the sewing machine. It makes it a lot easier to quilt. JMO

miholmes 04-09-2010 04:43 PM

Yeah someone said someone message me with a bit of advice, I you have to ask others, it's not the right one for you...

SO...I think I will just keep saving and looking. I have an old dining room table I put together with a card table to make an "L" shape at the moment....so until I find something I REALLY want perhaps I should just keep the money in the bank. :)

mcw1947 04-09-2010 04:54 PM

I have the Saunders sewing "desk " like furniture: opens up for one longer side....1 door maybe 12 wide opens ot 3 shelves for storage: the other wide opening swings out....that is where you put your legs under
It has worked for me ! I pd. for Saunders to put it together:had I not, there may have been a tad of swearing on the home front !

carrieg 04-09-2010 05:50 PM

My DH, who is NOT a carpenter, modified a kitchen table we bought for $90. He cut the hole to fit the machine and then I bought an acrylic insert.

Linda Van Hine 04-09-2010 06:20 PM

My girls bought this one for me a few years ago.. I love it.

Albujudy 04-09-2010 06:30 PM

It looks like the machine sets on top of the cabinet and does not set down in the cabinet. That would be the only negative issue.

littlehud 04-09-2010 06:52 PM

I have the Wal Mart Sauder sewing table and I love it. Paid $75.00 on clearance at my local Wally World. I love it.

I have the same one. I love it, espexially because it is in my living room and I can always close it up and it looks like a little hutch. ( not that it ever is closed )

Janice4 - I'm sorry you've chosen to take offense where none was intended. I realize that super-sensitivity to an issue is a common outcome of a traumatic experience, but most of us just don't react the same way you do, and find it hard to see the phrasing as anything other than a casual passing reference to oh maybe target practice???

zz-pd 04-09-2010 08:50 PM

you might try wale mart, they have sewing decks that open up to give you a longer sewing table and they close up like a cabnet, I got mine from wall mart a few years ago. Penny

I use a dining room table. Has plenty of room, you can even put storage containers or a small cabinet under it. At one time I had 2 machines sitting on it.

ForestHobbit 04-09-2010 09:13 PM

Most of my furniture in my sewing room are things picked up at Estate Sales. A lovely red eye treadle, a pair of glass fronted book shelves for fabric, a large vintage wood table for cutting and my Mom's sewing cabinet. You may consider sitting at the cabinet and seeing how it works for you before putting money down on it. Same for the Wal-Mart cabinet. What looks great doesn't always fit how you plan to use it. Have fun shopping.

Lorraine babuick 04-09-2010 09:15 PM

I would prefer one where the sewing machine drops down into the cabinet because it is so muc easier on your shoulders to have it at the table level.

Janice please don't leave the group, I am senative to certain things to, and maybe a simple I am sorry would of done it. but things are said often in life that hurt us. just like when someone said they don't do swaps because they use better fabric. I am poor for the first time in my life. and it hurts me greatly to have to ask for fabric to learn to quilt when just a year ago I could have bought half the store out. there are things out of our control, and that site you showed was very degrading to you and to me, but people view things diffrently. look at me I cant even spell. Hello...I agree with some of the others, have a look at Trading Post, freecycle and estate sales. There are many beautiful, solid pieces of furniture which can be modified very easily to suit your particular needs. Can't help it, but I am just not a lover of laminate, light-weight or flat-pack furniture, considering the construction and materials, they appear quite costly. Must admit though, they do offer many people just the modern set up they are looking for and many of the people who have posted find they work beautifully. Let us know how you get on.

Janice, first off I would like to extend my sympathies for your loss and pain. Please don't leave; its obvious from the number of your posts over the past few month that you have a lot to contribute to the rest of us. I don't know you nor do I know Michael so I'm not trying to defend anyone. A simply apology for what you found offensive would have been sufficient. Don't let someone else's choice of words dictate your involvement in what you so obviously enjoy. This has become a "fubar". Try to chalk it up to insensitivity or political incorrectness; those who haven't experienced such tragedy couldn't possibly have a clue. And Penny, hang in there. We've been there, done that. Keep the Faith - It does get better, eventually.

stitchinwitch 04-10-2010 01:41 AM

Yep! 'bought mine at WalMart too - it is "wood grain" and reverse of the layout from JoAnns. I like it alot - save some money and get THAT one!

patsyo56721 04-10-2010 04:20 AM

I also bought one from Walmart. I liked it so much that I bought my daughter one and 2 of my quilting friends have also bought it.

patsyo56721 04-10-2010 04:27 AM

Go to the Walmart web site & search sewing table and the one for $99.00 is the one I have .

Woodster 04-10-2010 06:16 AM

Take a bit more time and happy hunting! I, too, would try Craig'slist - even put an ad on the "Wanted" site. Look at Ebay, also - ya never know. I think you can do better than the WalMart cabinet if you have some time.

majormom 04-10-2010 07:19 AM

Amen

BKrenning 04-10-2010 07:25 AM

I have the Wal-Mart one. I got it at Christmas time for $75 plus free site to store shipping. Hubby cut a hole in it and put a shelf at the perfect height for my sewing machine. It does have wheels on it but it only rolls when it's all folded up. It is very sturdy & was exactly what I was looking for at a much better price than anything else I saw. Sure, I'd love to have a Horn, Koala or Roberts but I can't pay more for a cabinet than I did for all my sewing machines combined!

Beverly, I am very interested in how your DH cut the hole for your machine. I use a very sturdy banquet/conference table that my machine sets on. I have a dreamworld acrylic extension table for it. If my machine *set down* in the table, it would be the perfect height. Could your husband explain how exactly he modified your table? I would love to do this to mine if it is not to complicated for my poor ole brain to comprehend!
Thanks!
