So who has had a sewing injury? I spent most of last night in the ER, i sliced part of my finger off with a rotary cutter :( Thats one lesson I don't think I will soon forget! LOL!

Quilting Di 10-11-2010 09:31 AM

Did same thing in Aug '09. Sliced 2 fingers, index nearly off from 1st knuckle, middle just across corner. Still not back to anywhere normal. :x

pojo 10-11-2010 09:31 AM

I've done that before but I wouldn't go to the Er I just kept butterflying it shut. I'm stubborn. I needed stitches but I wouldn't go.

quiltingfan 10-11-2010 09:32 AM

 Hope you feel better soon....

running1 10-11-2010 09:36 AM

Oh yes... just recently... still don't quite know how I did this, but was happily snipping a thread and "snipped" the pad of my thumb... 6 stitches!! sigh... It has healed, but I'm scarred for life, I'm afraid. ha ha

Sadiemae 10-11-2010 09:37 AM

Ouch! When I first began using a new machine, I hit the wrong button when I leaned around my machine. Instead of hitting the bobbin wind button, I hit the cut thread button. Oh boy, was that painful. The needle went all the way through my index finger and broke into two pieces when it hit the bone. I came in and gave my husband the needle nose pliers to pull the needle out. He was able to to pull the part that came out of the fingernail, but when he tried to pull the other end he kept pinching me with the end of the pliers. Finally, I took the pliers and pulled it out myself. I was lucky that I had just put in a new needle and so it was clean. It healed fine, but it was sore for more than a few days.

np3 10-11-2010 09:38 AM

I think many of us have done that. I've also put my fingers too close to the sewing machine needle. Split the nail and nicked the finger. You don't forget that either!

RkayD 10-11-2010 09:42 AM

I am scared to death of that! Bless your bones. I hope you heal quickly and easily and are back to sewing soon.

amma 10-11-2010 09:53 AM

OUCH! I think we get too comfortable with our machines, cutters, scissors, etc... and then we set ourselves up for a catastrophy... myself included!

ptquilts 10-11-2010 10:00 AM

Sadiemae, I am cringing reading your story!! EEYYOOOOWWWW!

When I do hand quilting, don't know how, but I regularly drive the needle under the nail of my right thumb.

Yikes!

Navy Wife 10-11-2010 10:17 AM

Never doubt the power of a treadle machine. At age 11, I sewed right through my finger. It missed the bone, so the needle didn't break. It happened so fast it didn't even hurt! I must have really been pedaling that machine!

melslove 10-11-2010 10:18 AM

Wow! I guess I am glad I am not alone :) You guys really make me feel better! They really got a big kick out of me in the ER when i told them how i did it. They were laughing all night :/

katied772 10-11-2010 10:25 AM

Mine have mostly involved needles in the fingers. Who knew sewing could be so dangerous?

cindle 10-11-2010 10:28 AM

Who needs scary movies when you can just read this post. OUCH! I remember my grandma telling me how she got the needle of her sewing machine (the kind you have to pump your feet to get it going) right threw her finger. Shivers yucky  I had an accident this weekend too but not quilt related. I burned my hand making strawberry rhubarb tarts for thanksgiving but I must say they turned out yummy.

SherriB 10-11-2010 10:39 AM

Yikes!!!! I have cut my fingers with scissors and almost sewed my finger with the needle. I haven't cut my finger with the rotary cutter yet. (Knocking on wood as I type!!!) I did slice the tip of my pinky finger off with a mandolin slicer from Pampered Chef. Does that count? LOL!

paloma 10-11-2010 10:44 AM

my long arm got me big time some how i got finger where the take lever is being it go so fast it beat my finger to death ,two spots of stiches and can not close finger real tight but did no bleed on quilt

prairiequeen 10-11-2010 10:45 AM

Sewed right through my index finger trying to push a jeans I was patching through. Needless to say now we just by new jeans.

nellie 10-11-2010 11:39 AM

healings your way i know the feeling went to a all nighter hospital myself only it was the coffee glass pot that crack on my finger 6 stitches healed very nicly good as new just rest don,t do any housework for a few days and you,ll be good and really to sew again

Numa 10-11-2010 12:19 PM

I have a sewing knee. I use to turn my foot so that the top of my foot was on the floor whenever I got really involved in a project. Stretched the ligaments and tendons in that knee. Note the USE to. Apparently I was more agile then than I am now! LOL

raptureready 10-11-2010 12:56 PM

Hope you feel better soon. Yes, I've even sewn right through a fingernail---the part that still has the finger underneath it. OUCH!! Mostly now I just aggravate my arthritis.

dreamboat 10-11-2010 01:01 PM

a stiletto was laying by my sewing machine without the protector cover and I accidently knocked off and the tip hit the top of my foot and blood sperted all over the wall next to it. It swelled up and I put an ice pack on it. It was allright after about 12 hours.

merrylouw 10-11-2010 01:03 PM

Yikes! Thanks for sharing. That should be a lesson to all of us. I got my finger way too close to the needle while FMQ, and you guessed it, a needle in the finger! Not bad, though, just a little oweee.

QuiltDraggon 10-11-2010 01:07 PM

I dropped my 15 inch square ruler on the top of my foot and the corner busted it open and it was swollen and bruised for weeks. I barely cut my finger with the rotary cutter once and have been very careful ever since. Haven't sewn my finger yet, but I'll watch for that after reading how many of you have.

Norene B 10-11-2010 01:08 PM

I got a blister cutting with my rotary cutter last night. Does that count. The blister broke and is about 3/8" wide. Guess I need gloves. LOL

mcdaniel023 10-11-2010 01:26 PM

Ouch!!! I was cutting yesterday. Laid the rotary cutter down and for real picked it up thinking those qb ladies told you not to do that. Now I will be extra careful. You warned us of the dangers lurking.

BarbaraA 10-11-2010 01:34 PM

I also sliced a corner tip of my finger off earlier this year. I am finally getting all the feeling back. I am real careful now. Hope your finger gets back to normal soon, those bandages from the ER get in the way of sewing :)

LeeAnn 10-11-2010 01:42 PM

I was home alone late one winter night. DH was away at deer camp. I was making the most of my sewing time when I cut my finger with the rotary cutter. I drove myself to the ER and had to have 7 stitches. I was not a happy camper. It healed nicely and I now have a great deal of respect for Mr. R Cutter.

Cyn 10-11-2010 01:50 PM

Oh my! Thanks for the warning. I need it everyone in a while :(

wvdek 10-11-2010 02:08 PM

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyewwwwwwww!
Another good reason for me to get a gripper - to keep the cutter from slicing me to pieces.

When I read your reply, I had to look who sent it. My sister did the same thing at about age 10 or 11 on the treadle we learned to sew on. That was more than 45 years ago. Just a few weeks ago I was reminded of this when I was careless and got my finger under the needle and got quite a poke. It bent the needle and I had to change it. This was on my more modern machine though.

Baysidegal 10-11-2010 03:56 PM

Years ago I asked to use my MILs sewing machine for a project. As she hovered over me, I was so nervous that I started sewing and somehow brought the needle straight thru my thumbnail...It broke of course and I pulled it out....AND I never asked to use her machine again I was so embarrased.

I think my DH would have "tossed his cookies" immediately after performing 'surgery'!

I was recycling some buttons the other week and stabbed myself with the seam ripper. Does that count? I was putting them on a baby sweater that I made for my niece's twins. No blood on the yarn and it's all healed now.

litacats 10-11-2010 05:31 PM

I sewed my finger with a treadle machine when I was about 14 and broke a neadle in my finger once had to pull it out, but my husband takes the cake.
he cut of the sides of 2 fingers with a stanley knife and it took months to heal properly, another time he sliced the side of his index finger and it healed with a lump, a few months later he did it again and took the lump of now it has healed without a lump, but when i rang emergency and told them i was bringing in my husband as he had sliced the side of his finger of she said don't come in till after 5PM as the doctor won't be here before that to stitch i told her there was nothing left to stitch, so i took him in to get it dressed and she said your right there's nothing left, that took ages to heal. he has been in er so many times they all greet him by name

tuesy 10-11-2010 06:06 PM

OUCH!! I pray for a speedy recovery!

SueKitten1 10-11-2010 06:33 PM

That must have really hurt. Gives me butterflies just thinking about it. Hope it feels better soon.

theoldgraymare 10-11-2010 06:38 PM

Reading all your posts has made me twitchy!

jayelee 10-11-2010 06:42 PM
