Can anyone make a recommendation of a place where I can get a good
extension table for my machine? How do they attach? It looks like the machine has to be free arm. Don't they make one that would fit without taking the regular extension off the machine? I would appreciate any advise. Thanks. |
Have you seen this:
http://www.seweziusa.com/ It's great. Many of my guild members have one and it's the next thing on my want list. |
Check with a machine dealer. They do make them for Singer featherweights that are not free arm. I believe they are also available through catalogues like Clotilde or Nancy's Notions. I purchased one for my Bernina and then broke it in half. Lucky for me my husband is a machinist. He used the broken one as a pattern and made me a new one out of plexy glass. He was even able to use the legs from the old one. It is not quite as heavy a material but it is more flexable and I have not managed to break it yet.
What I love about it is that it is see through. I have the added surface on top along with a great place to store things underneath that are visible. The table another poster linked to is great also but rather expensive. It is also rather small. At one time Staples had a computer table with a cut out it in that worked the same way but was not on wheels. They may still be available. Two of my friends who have a custom drapery business use one of them for their Berninas. |
This isn't what I had in mind. I have a table. I want to attach an
extension to my sewing machine on top of the table. |
Most of the table extensions are designed to go around the free arm, not the sewing machine's extension table.
Here is a website that sells extensions: http://www.singersewingsandiego.com/drwolasewste1.html Here is a website that describes an adjustable extension with storage: http://tinyurl.com/2ay3pm I'm sure there are more types. I Googled sewing machine extension table to find these. |

is this what you want? hubby got mine thru clotilde.com
|
You don't mention what brand of machine you have... But what you want is a Sew Steady Table. They make them for all Makes and Models. You will need to give them this info. when you are ready to order. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought one of those like Bevangers but hate it. The quilt keeps catching on the front and corners when you try to quilt. So cannot keep my stitchs even.
Ended up buying a wood table with a lift in it and love it. Expensive but if you quilt your own quilts it is worth the cost. The sewezi is the cheapest but not big enough. |

Thanks for all the replies. I'll keep checking around. I would love to have a cabinet with a place to lower the machine, but I can't afford one right
now. I appreciated the notes about the quilt catching on the extension. I hadn't considered that. A lot to think about. |
I bought the Bertha sewing table for large machines, it cost me $550.
Surf the web for table makers like Arrow to find the best prices. Bertha has extensions on both sides and the back so no problem with size. She is over 7 feet long extended. But was a real headache to put togather. Came in 3 boxes. You need 2 people to put it togather. |
this is where i got mine -
http://dreamworld-inc.com/ but it wasn't long before i got this for everyday use - http://www.sewingtableshop.com/sewin...eriestable.cfm combine the second one with a couple of utility tables that you probably already have and it's a great setup. i just quilted a queen size on my domestic machine with this set-up. the other i now use for classes and such. i made a wood one for my workhorse. really easy to do. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e3...1/IMG_1112.jpg |
Hey fabricluvr
Thanks for the great idea. I have an uncle who does woodworking. It looks like it would be really easy to make. I'm sure he has some scraps of wood lying around. Thanks! |
I bought an old farm style table to cut a hole in the top to sit machine down into. It hasn't gotten done yet cause hubby is so rarely home.
I hope to get it done this spring. Debbie |

Fabricluvr,
That's the best idea that I have seen in a long time. Thank you so much for sharing with all of us!! :D |
(I would love to have a cabinet with a place to lower the machine, but I can't afford one)Don't know if you have a handy dandy person over there or not, but, my FIL took a hollow door and put formica on top of it (w/glue)...add legs...then I had dh measure my machine outline plus the clear acrylic extension...cut it out and I dropped it in...perfect! And, a nice area to work in too. I love my extension top! Even not in the door. Don't know the brand w/o looking but, it sure helps in fabric not dropping off too soon on me. When in the table...it absol. is great. Skeat

Both of my sisters have a Horn quilting cabinet/table and they love it. I'm hoping to get one soon. Not only does your machine drop down in a custom made well to make everything "flush" and eliminate drag, but also there are models which have a drop leaf, thereby extending the table in front of you where you need the extra space when working on a quilt. A word of caution:They are quite pricey, but Horn has been crafting sewing and quilting tables/cabinets for years and they put out a wonderful product.

Roxi.. Check out the post for Barb's quilting patterns. I brought it back with the instructions on how to make an extension table. Hope this can help you out and much cheaper then the store bought.

Barb
I'm confused. Where do I find the post for Barb's quilting patterns? |
Barb
I found it. Just took a little searching. I plan on making one. My uncle can cut it for me. Thanks for the great idea. |
Your welcome. I first made a paper tempaplate of the opening for the freearm, and my hubby went from there. I find it so helpful, as I sew on my kitchen table, so that I have more room
|
Here's the pic of the table that is a hollow door w/formica glued on it...it is the front table w/machine. The table w/the glasses is a seperate table. I did put a 2x4 under it in an upright position for the machine is very heavy and I thought it best to have an extra support...just in case:))Go to: http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/15/9044.page there you will find the pic of my table. Hey Marty Mo....I just loooove that quilt on your avatar! Can you post for us a picture in the 'picture' section of that quilt. (hope you have other pics for us addicted ones!) Can you tell us a bit about it like is it your pattern??Oh, thank you! Skeat

I ahve a Kanome quilters Companion and it had the extension table with when I purchased it .Wilma

I know what you are looking for. These tables are made from Lexon plastic and are very sturdy. I have one for all (5) my machines and love them. "Specially the see thru part that lets me store needed tools under it. It's perfect for me cause I'm left-handed.
|
I love my acrylic "sew-easy" extension, have the larger size and use it for clases and retreats. At home my machine is in a cabinet. The acrylic extension also doubles as a light box by sliding my small Ott light underneath. I love it.
|
That is really good idea for the light box ,wish i had known about it before. But I sure will remember it now .Thanks again .Wilma

OMG you need to search YOU TUBE, There is a woman on there who built up her table top to fit around her machine and then takes it apart and stores it when not needed. It is made with insulation and table top plastic covering. Showed it to my husband and he is going to make me one. I think it will work wonderful. I have an extension table for my machine and it is to bulky and mostly in the way.

My BF made a bed for my daughter. A couple years later she didn't want it anymore, now I'm using it. He converted it to a table for the sewing machine. Put a temp plastic b/c he didn't sand it and it was pulling the fabric. It works for me!

Ok, I have an idea. I'm trying it this weekend and I'll let you all know how it works and post a picture if I can figure out how. I am going to Lowes and get two laminated shelves, hopefully 10 x 24 if they make that size. I'll hook them together on the bottom with big staples ( are they called brads? ). I'm thinking I'll only have to cut a section out of one shelf depending on where they end up. Then, just put some sort of feet on it and voila it will be done and finished. No raw edges, nice and smooth for the fabric to slide over. Hope it works out. Should be cheap enough. I can't take total credit for this idea. I saw something similar on one of my searches.

Did you find a Sewing Machine extension table? If not, I purchased mine from http://www.sewingmates.com/. I LOVE IT! It is sturdy, well made, matches up perfect with my Viking and there's not a sharp edge or anything that could snag or bunch my fabric. The owners are Great people to work with too! They come in 4 sizes too. Check them out and tell them Bonita referred you. Happy sewing. :)
