A number of years ago I had an older machine (70s model I think) that the light was burned out so I just used a gooseneck study lamp that we had. It fit nicely on the back corner of the machine cabinet behind the cord connection and I could position it however I needed to for best visibility. At the time it was difficult to find a replacement bulb for the machine. Now they are easily available.

I have the Bendy Bright Light attached to the side of my machine and love it. I also bought the 6 LED light strip which I attached under the harp. It was great for piecing, but got knocked off while I was fighting the bulk of the quilt while quilting. I tried SuperGlue, but it still was knocked off while quilting. I'm disappointed it didn't work because the light is bright.

I guess it depends on where you need your light. I had a machine that lost the needle light, so a Mighty Bright worked fantastic. If you are looking to light the harp area, then the light strips look like a good option. You should update us with pictures when you get it up and running.

I also have the Inspired LED strip light. It is fantastic and you can easily custom fit it to your machine. The light is in the harp of your machine where you most need it to be. Highly recommend this light.

I purchased a freestanding one from a local quilt shop for $15.99 -- it has a very long bendable neck and can be adjusted to aim right at the needle area -- it is awesome when threading the needle as well. I keep one in my travel sewing items and have one for my sewing room.

Cathyvv, that video made the process look simple. I've never "done" electrical, but I do watch This Old House and I think that I could do this!

I made an LED light as per the video. I bought led strips and a tiny switch from eBay--cheaply. After installation I found it lit up the harp space well, which was good for general lighting, but added no additional illumination to the needle area which is where I needed it most. The Bendable Bright Light offered the solution I needed. This little light is so bright it's all that is needed to see well for sewing(besides ambient room illumination land whatever the machine comes with). I highly recommend it. Amazon sells it for $28.73 right now.
