Would you buy this machine? And if so, would you pay 50.00 for it? I will appreciate any help I can get. A friend has this for sale, and I am undecided.
I'm not sure what brand it is. but the cabinet looks like it is in excellent condition.
In a minute. It's not a 301, but I bet it has a lot of similar characteristics. Can you find out what it is? The number is on the little plate on the pillar.
I would look over the wiring and make sure it has a foot pedal, but I think I would pay $50.00 for it. Like Hattie Frances says, the cabinet looks beautiful.
Yes I will be able to do that in a little while when I go to look at it in person. She says it works great and has been told that they are woth 300.00, but she is only asking 50 for it. It is not a very good picture she sent but the cabinet alone would be worth it for me.
Oh my goodness, I hope it has all of the thinhs with it. Maybe I should ask her to hook it up for me and take some thread and a singer bobbin along. JUST IN CASE.
I think that's a 319 in which case it uses non-standard needles, 206 x 13. It's low shank and uses discs for more deco stitches. Make sure the bobbin case isn't damaged from people using the wrong size of needle. HTH.
There are lots of good points to those old singers. I think it is a good deal.
you bet Barb
cabinet alone is worth it...I'd take it

Price wise...and sturdy, well cared for machine is worth that! |
I say YES YES YES!!
I bought a good condtion Singer 401A in a beautiful cabinet for $100 and was happy too. |
Test it for sewing and then jump on it!
It looks like a 328K.
No, I take that back. It isn't a 328K.
Look it over real good. Are the wires in good shape - any cracks? Does the plug fit the hole right? Anything loose? Is the tension bent? Does the tension spring go back in place when you push on it? Does it make a stitch? Does it have the disks? Does it have attachments? Spend some time looking it over and hemming and hawing - $50 probably is a decent price - Look up the disks on line and find out what you have to spend for needles and bobbins before you go. Hopefully the shuttle will be in working order. Feel around that hook for burrs. Open up the top and look in there. Any rust? Dried on oil? How about under it? Is there gooey looking oil? Rust? $50 is too much if it is a project.
It's a Singer model 306K and yes it takes the same specialty needles as the 319. $50 is a good price for it if it's in working, good condition. You'll have to decide if you're up to ordering needles on the internet, because you won't be able to run to WallyWorld or Joannes for them. To me, it's worth it as they're great machines.
IF it sews, GRAB IT!
Yes, you should buy it! It is a 306, as someone already told you. This and the 319 are special machines that Singer made, and even though they use special needles, they are much sought after by collectors. If you don't get it, you'll regret it for a long time...
I bought a similar-looking machine in a garage sale (a 306) in a nice cabinet tho' maybe not quite as nice as this one, and paid $20. Make an offer of what you can afford. Buyers like us are thin on the ground, despite the impression you may get from reading the board!
In a New York heartbeat...if it works.
And I agree with Candace, it's a 306. Definitely not a 319...I dream of 319's, want a nice shiny black one. |
In a heartbeat.
I personally probably wouldn't pay $50 for it. But that is just me. Nothing against the machine but I have my favorite vintage machines and this isn't one doesn't fit the category. I don't like to have to find special needles and things like that.
In a heartbeat!
This is exactly right. They do not go for even $125 around here, central NY. This series (206) was Singer's first foray into ZZ machines, and they soon realized their mistake with the special needles. (At least that's my take on why they were not made for too many years.) Some folks really do love them in spite of needling special needles, which cannot be bought in local Walmart/Joann/quilt shops. They are not available in nearly as many types as Organ or Schmetz either.
I'm sure a few have sold on ebay for hundreds from sellers who tell lies about it's capability. I had one once in mint condition except for the damaged bobbin case. I gave it away. "I think that's a 319 in which case it uses non-standard needles, 206 x 13. It's low shank and uses discs for more deco stitches. Thank you Ladies for all of the help. You are a GREAT bunch of sewing friends with loads of sewing info. I havent gotten it yet but I will let you know when I do.And I will go over it with a fine tooth comb LOL. I am going to ask her to hook it up. I dont know what I will do though if she doesnt have any bobbins or needles for it.

I would have it at home already. I have been wanting one for several years and the cheapest I have found on in Ontario is 300.00
I'd pay $50 for a Singer without the cabinet in a heartbeat especially the older ones They are great machines
Looks like the machine is in really good condition.
THE CABINET IS WORTH $50.00 BUCKS
Will be interesting when we find out just what the model number is! Lots of different ideas and some are going to be wrong.
buy it the cabinet is worth it
Looks like a 306.
I would.
I didn't mean that the 319 is not a good sewing machine. It's a very good strong machine. I just meant that some ebay sellers tout it as being "Industrial strength" and ask hundreds for them.
They were made as home machines, and will do some heavy sewing, but they are not made for a steady diet of heavy work. I learned this on some old sewing machine groups, not because I have experience with them. Some sellers say the same thing about modern machines with plastic gears, too. It's dishonest, and then folks who don't know any better parrot the same things. |
Looks a lot like my 301 that I paid $5 for years ago without a cabinet. I would love a cabinet...that alone is worth the price...and you get a machine to boot.
I am amazed that cabinets are so sought after. I just gave two nice Singer cabinets away because I know I could not sell them on CL. Have you folks who live where they are scarce and expensive checked CL?
My feet would not hit the ground while I was getting there with my money. froggyintexas
I'd pay $50.00 for the cabinet alone.
