I know everyone who says one should NOT sew over pins is right. Just because I've gottena away with it so far doesn't mean I will always be lucky. Since I first posed the question, I have been more aware and truly am trying to train self to pull those pins out as I get to them.

I have a Janome6500 and I won't sew over pins... first of all I rarely pin but when I do I don't want to take the chance of having a broken needle tip fall down into the machine and create chaos or go flying into my face. So if I do pin, I slow down and pull it out before the needle gets to it.

I never really thought of the different scenarios of what could happen if you do sew over pins. I was always concerned with the pin, not necessarily the needle. Now that someone pointed out that the tip of the needle could break off and go down into the machine I think I will try not to sew over pins anymore. I sure can't afford a repair like this. Oh, and by the way, after long consideration I determined the only time I took my machine in for repair is because the timing was off. Probably the result of hitting a pin. I'm breaking this bad habit. Thanks for the awakening!!!

One of my earlier machines (Singer) was a slant needle design and it would be knocked out of timing when it hit a pin. I had totally forgotten about that machine til now. (I must be getting spoiled with my current toys.)

I sew over them only when absolutely necessary. I have a Pfaff 2134

That happened to me too, only the piece went in my eye. No damage, but sure was scary! :shock:

Something very similar happened to me. I was sewing along and the needle hit a pin. It bent the pin, but broke the needle, which came flying at me and hit me in the head. I'm lucky it didn't hit me in the eye. Needless to say, I don't sew over pins anymore!

I have just begun machine applique, using the correct tiny applique pins and can feel how thick and strong they are, certainly would not want to run over one of those with my Brother 4000D:roll:

my 2 cents worth NEVER WITH ANY MACHINE EVER SEW OVER PINS!!! ALWAYS REMOVE THE PINS AS YOU GET CLOSE!
