Sewing Room Floor

What kind of floor is in your sewing room? My son is moving out soon and I will take over his bedroom as my new sewing room. His room has carpet and my current sewing room has hardwood floors. I plan on ripping out his carpet since it is ?? years old and don't know if it is better to replace it or go with the wood floor. I won't know the condition of the floor until the carpet comes out since it is the carpet that was in there when I bought the house. I could have it refinished or go with new carpet. What are the advantages or disadvantages to both choices?

Patti25314 10-22-2012 01:18 PM

I have carpet that hides everything -- the needles and pins I drop, but not the thread of bits of fabric. And it holds onto these tightly! If I could, I think I would go with wood.

GrandmaNewt 10-22-2012 01:20 PM

I have carpet in my sewing room...hate it. Can't wait for the day I get to remodel and put tile or something in there instead.

The things I dont like about carpeting in sewing room....My chair doesn't roll easily, thread bits stick all over the carpet and are hard to get up even with the vacuum, dropping pins is a nightmare..more than one has landed pointed straight up for my foot to find.

sew_Tracy 10-22-2012 01:21 PM

Wood floor, carpet is a nightmare. I vote remove it. Pins and thread get lost in carpet, thread tangles in your vacuum, and dust settles deep. LOL fact is, we have NO carpeting in our house, allergens reduced. The plus side of having carpets is that you don't see the animal hair as much or the dust bunnies. Still, I vote no carpet.

We bought our house two years ago. approx 6 months after moving in, I pulled out the carpet in my sewing room and put in laminate flooring. My sewing room is on the second floor. I chose the laminate because we knew we would one day sell the house (which we are trying to do now) then need to replace the laminate back with carpet. We realized that carpet "sells" better since the room is really a bedroom. I love my laminate. I did it myself, it took me approx 1 day and was relativly inexpensive. However, If you pull up the carpet and find hard woods, i would strongly recommend refinishing those if they are in goodshape. I like my "hard surface flooring" because not only do pins not get stuck in the carpet, but it is relativly easy to clean. I just swirl a dust mop over it and then use a vacuum to get up the bits left behind. If you are worried about noise or warmth, a couple of small area rugs or mats work wonders, and are easy to clean/shake out. Also we have pets (dogs) and I hate how carpet holds onto fur. Even with vacuuming every day I can usually get a canister of fur...its unreal how much dirt and stuff carpet holds onto.

I have carpet in my sewing room and I hate it! Like Patti25313 stated, it hides all the pins and needles and all the threads and fabric get intertwined with the fibers of the carpet. Also, my hot iron has been knocked off my ironing board more than once (either by me or my Lily Pie who loves to lay on the board). I now have several places on the carpet that have the exact imprint of my iron's sole plate. I don't know what the right flooring is but I will be watching this thread!

I have carpet and I wish I had wood. But, I never will, so I walk around with fuzzy, stringy, strippy feet.Ha

Joset 10-22-2012 01:38 PM

i have laminated flooring and i love it.

franc36 10-22-2012 01:42 PM

I had carpet in the sewing room prior to the one I have now. My present sewing room has a hard wood floor. I much prefer the wood floor. It is much easier to keep clean and I don't have to worry about stepping on a dropped pin or needle.

sewmary 10-22-2012 01:42 PM

Have wood and can't imagine the nightmare carpet would be.

snipforfun 10-22-2012 02:09 PM

Be happy you don't have what I have - dark purple carpet! It was here when we bought the house and I cant justify replacing this high quality carpet. The previous owner was a crazy Minnesota Vikings fan. It is a bugger to keep tidy!

Deborahlees 10-22-2012 02:19 PM

have wood, love it, just run the swifter around, and chair rolls easily....

delma_paulk 10-22-2012 02:20 PM

I have laminate flooring and love it!!!!! We live in Florida and the sand down here just grinds away at a carpet and with my lung problem the flooring we replaced it with is wonderful. Easy to keep and I can go barefoot in my sewing room w/out worrying about pins and needles. Use a swiffer dry mop and vinegar water for mopping.

I have carpet too, and don't like it. My chair is hard to roll and pins and needles get lost in it. My DH is usually the on who finds lost pins by stepping on them. Serves him right since he doesn't wear his slippers. He thinks I drop them on purpose. I would love tile, but I'm afraid it would be too cold. Hard wood is my second choice. Probably won't have either, since the carpet is only 5 years old.

Had carpeting and hated it. I have replaced it with laminate, which looks like wood. I just LOVE it! So much easier!

wolph33 10-22-2012 02:58 PM

wood-no hesitation.I have carpet and hate it for all the reasons others have already stated.

QandE2010 10-22-2012 03:03 PM

When we had our home built in 2005, we couldn't afford wood flooring. So we went with carpeting throughout except in the baths & kitchen. First I replaced the carpet in my sewing studio with laminate wood flooring. Then we put the same kind & Colorado in the living room and 3 bedrooms. Then we put tile in the Florida room. I love the wood. It is easy to clean and I can see the threads, pins & whatever else I drop. We also have 2 poodles & the laminate wooddoes not scratch like real wood. So I vote for wood.

QuiltnNan 10-22-2012 03:12 PM

i have laminate floors - clean up like a dream

Buckeye Rose 10-22-2012 03:14 PM

I completely redid my sewing room and ripped out the 70's shag carpet then refinished the hardwood floor underneath....best idea I ever had!.....I can run the broom over the floor in 30 seconds and am done......no more pins hiding in the carpet for me to step on!

MimiBug123 10-22-2012 03:20 PM

Out with the carpet and unless hardwood is discovered under it, I'd say in with the laminate! So much easier to maintain!

barri1 10-22-2012 03:43 PM

When I moved in, I pulled up all the carpet, and have no regrets. I wasn't quilting then. I just really hate carpet. The dog I had when I moved in would leave hair in every corner. The guy I have now doesn't shed. I have a couple of area rugs, as the place looks funny without something..

QuiltnLady1 10-22-2012 03:58 PM

I have always had carpet -- never thought a thing about it because we have never been in a position to replace it. Hmmmm -- might be something to think about except it is a pretty cold room. I could probably swing wood look vinyl.

tatavw01 10-22-2012 04:00 PM

am doing the same to my room am going cork, you can find them at home depot and lowes.

MaryLane 10-22-2012 04:29 PM

I have carpet & have no problem with pins but it is always covered with threads. I don't care for laminate and plan to use cork when I switch rooms. My sewing room is upstairs & hardwood would be too loud.

kitsykeel 10-22-2012 04:33 PM

Wood, laminate or tile definitely. Carpet, bah humbug!

luana 10-23-2012 03:50 AM

My sewing room is in the lower level of our condo. We have cold winters and the floor gets cold. I have a thicker pile carpet now (that's what came with the condo) but I'm looking at those flat carpet tiles. Has anyone used them. I thought it might be warmer than laminate and have still have some of the advantages.

This is exactly my feeling. I used to have hard floors upstairs and the sound of feet down was awful. Now it is my sewing room and I like the warmth of the carpet as well as the quiet. I have no problem with pins and I vacuum often.

When we built the addition that became my sewing room, there was no question. Laminate flooring. The only thing I would do different, would have put a thicker vapor barrier down to help make the floor a little warmer in winter. Two pairs of ragg socks works tho:)

Barbshobbies 10-23-2012 07:25 AM

My daughter put laminated wood in her kitchen. Being a good Mom, I didn`t say any thing. Then the day came for me to help her out for a while, and was that floor ever easy to clean. If I wouldn`t live in the North country, I would have it in every room. Don`t get me wrong, I love my location & my over 150 yr home, but it gets cold on your feet in the house in winter.

Wintersewer 10-23-2012 07:45 AM

I love my carpeted sewing room floor! Just shows how different we all are!! LOL!

GagaSmith 10-23-2012 12:07 PM

I sew in a bedroom with a low loft berber carpeting. I use one of the heavy plastic mats from an office supply store where my chair is. I can roll around from the sewing machine to the ironing board to the cutting board. Works great.

Vanuatu Jill 10-23-2012 12:12 PM

I love my hardwood floor where I sew. Makes cleaning/sweeping so easy and my chair rolls easily around. Plus, if I drop a pin or something, I can hear it.My Moms house where I grew up was new when they bought it, promptly laid carpet everywhere, then when we grew up and moved out, decided to replace it. When the carpet guy ripped it out, commented to my mom she was crazy for laying carpet again over such beautiful hard wood floors, so she had him re-finish the floor and bought a lovely area rug. She never regretted it. It was so nice!

I'd take almost anything over carpet. Laminate, ceramic tile, hardwood, even vinyl.

sew1 10-23-2012 12:46 PM

I have had both. Prefer the laminate. So much easier to clean up my itty, bitty scraps off of. Less time cleaning means more time to create.

DawnMarie 10-23-2012 12:53 PM

I have tile in my sewing room. I really like it. Wood would be nice too. My husband installed some cork flooring for some people, and I would consider that in a new sewing room as well. It's pricey, but very comfortable and easy on the back, especially if you need to stand for a while either cutting or pressing. Easy to clean as well. :)

sewgarden 10-23-2012 12:56 PM

I have vinyl planks that look like timber and my daughter has tiles. She told me she likes my floor better than hers as it's totally level and doesn't mark as easily as her tiles can. I think I would go with the timber if it's in good enough condition to be used.

BMP 10-23-2012 01:02 PM

Laminate that looks darn close to ceramic tile ...love it.

pinecone 10-23-2012 02:09 PM

I have an 1850's house so carpet is warmer.

I read somewhere to get a new toilet bowl brush and use it to swipe the threads before vacuuming. Works for me and I have a magnetic wand from an automotive store to pick up stray pins.

When a part of the basement was converted to a qulting studio, I wanted laminate. However, the concrete was somewhat uneven and it would have been costly to get it level. We ended up with a good quality carpet with a tight nap installed over special padding with a moisture barrier. Love it because I stand while quilting at my longarm machine. My knees and legs do not hurt at all. I use a lightweight vacuum cleaner after each major project, switching to the heavy duty vacuum cleaner...a happy medium.

sparkys_mom 10-24-2012 03:40 AM

I have laminate and would never go to carpet - it hides too many pins - things that go "ouch" in your foot. :)
