This is such a wonderful place to pour your heart out that I know I can just talk. In the last 24 hours I have gone through my 88 yr old father going into the hospital - should be ok - but couldn't walk and couldn't keep any food down. After 4 bags of transfused blood and lots of fluid they are thinking a medication change will take care of this. Along with that my husband is being moved by his school district but with the budget cuts and all - after 24 years he does not know what he is teaching, where he is teaching or when he might know.
With all of this I was drawn to the sewing machine and cut out and sewed new potholders. Nothing big, nothing special but it felt so very comforting and I so enjoyed the time listening to the machine and feeling the material in my hands. I did not believe how comforting this was to me. I may sit in there all night!!! Thank you for listening and I know there are others out there who use sewing for therapy! Jana |
Yep - two types of therapy in my life - horse therapy & quilting therapy! Nothing else beats them for making me feel good inside & out!
|
um hum!
|
|
I so agree - everything is right in the world while the machine is humming.
|
To keep the mind and hands busy is great therapy. I understand your current worries and how you decided to act. I found in my own life termoils, keeping busy kept me sain and able keep perspective on the world. Keep it up GF.
peace :) |
Prayers for your father and DH. It is really tough when you like a job, location etc. and then are uprouted somewhere else. Several years back when I had a bad day at work, I would come home, saddle up my horse and just take off. It melted the stress away. Sewing also helps. Wishing the best of luck to your husband and father.

I always tel people that sewing is what keeps me sane. Prayers for your family.
|
Yes, sewing has always been my therapy for mental health, spiritual health, and just plain ole fun health.
Praying for your family...for things to get worked out. |
Amen sister!
Prayers for some tranquility for you and your family. In the meantime, let your sewing machine purr! |
My 'medicine' is playing the piano and quilting. I think I just focus on it and forget about life. At least for a while. Great therapy! :D

Oh me too! Glad you know what is good for you :)
Prayers to your Dad and good luck with your hubby. I've been busy lately preparing for a garage sale and I told my sis today that I am cranky b/c I haven't sewn in a few days. Although she doesn't sew she totally knows me :) Can't wait to get this sale over with!! |
Prayers to you and your family...I too resolve all the world problems and especially my own...sewing...it keeps me sane
|
Agreed. Quilting is great therapy.
|
I was sewing last night and listening to that wonderful machine sound and thought--I even like the way sewing machines smell. I get happy just thinking about it! Glad we know we aren't alone with our therapy.
|
Thank you very much to everyone who has commented. Just nice to be able to share this with a group who understands.
Thank you again! Jana |
There's no medicine like sew medicine.
Good one huh?? |
Yes! Great Therapy, I go into a world all of my own.

When I'm dealing with big issues over which I have little control, I find quilting to be a wonderful escape. I AM THE MASTER of whatever project I'm working on!
In the bad old days, this approach only increased my suffering if the quilt I was working on didn't quite measure up to some amorphous standard I had in my head. In current, happier times, I've come to realize that: 1) There are no quilt police; 2) My quilts don't have to be as amazing as those featured in books and magazines because ... 3) Recipients are always blown away by something as simple (to me) as a DNP. |
Isn't it the best! Just letting your hands guide the material under the foot listening to the hum of the machine. Oh how comforting.
|
I agree. Sewing and cross stitch are mine. Just having a needle and thread in my hands is immediate comfort. They are my best friends.
|
I've always thought of my quilting as my sanity saver and on many occassions, it has been just that. With that in mind, I always have a shoe box or two of pre-cut easy to sew quilts ready to stitch should the need arise. Then I can just grab the box and stitch the frustrations away. These easy sew quilts often end up as Community Quilts because although we are experiencing turnmoil in our own lives, there are often those out there with even bigger problems who might really appreciate a quilt. It has always worked for me. As for your poor teacher husband, as a recently retired teacher, I can empathsize. Teaching never got easier even with lots of experience. They just always seemed to expect more and often you were to make do with less. The lack of communication and last minute decisions about teaching assignments and locations was another huge stresser. Hope all this gets settled reasonably and soon.

I have been caring for my 92 year old mother and working full time, sewing keeps me sane!! I escape and only think about the pattern, material etc. I told someone, that I sew good karma into my quilts.
sending good thoughts to your father and both you and your husband. |
If it weren't for sewing there would be brutalized barking chihuahuas, GKs, cats, and maybe the neighborhood. Thanks to sewing, I'm keeping my image as granny sweet and understanding.
|
Sewing is total therapy. Prayers to your father and DH.

Isn't it wonderful to be able to forget your worries for a little while and pour all of your energy into doing something creative. I feel sure all will turn out just fine. Change is not necessarily a bad thing - so embrace it and look forward to a new phase in your life. Good luck!
|
I understand exactly! When my husband was in the hospital for 10 weeks, I took my sewing machine to the hotel room. Each nite after a long day at the hospital, I worked on a quilt top for my sister. It kept me busy mentally so I had less time to worry and fuss, and I also had something to show for my time besides just sitting there for hours on end. Now, when I am the most upset, I sew. It heals the mind more than anything I've found.
|
Glad you are a part of the "board family". Yes, sewing is such good therapy. I guess when I am at the sewing maching my mind has to focus on what I am doing, therefore, can not get too bogged down with worry. Helps me to relax and am doing something constructive at the same time. Prayers for you and your family.

Great therapy. Fewer calories than emotional eating and cheaper than shopping!
Prayers for you and your family ... |
Even when my machines are being tempermental, I love sewing! All kinds of sewing!! Problems with my machines are usually soemthing I can fix...not so much with other things going on in my life...
|
Praying that things will be better for you. I have used the sewing machine for therapy for many years now. Lately I have not even been wanting to do it at all.
|
It's sewing and knitting for me. And if I can lose myself in a good book that helps too. Take care.
|
this is what keeps me sane sometimes, you can just escape and get a little peace and comfort
|
I will put you and your family on my daily prayer list. I run a busy psychiatric unit; chaos is usually the rule of the day. It helps so much to come home to my machine, Phoebe, and all my fabric. I put all the frustrations and disappointments into piecing and stitching, turning out gifts for friends and family. Keep stitching!
|
Prayers for your family. I ask God to wrap you all in His heavenly QUILT of LOVE and protect you. Hang in there God never gives more than we can with stand without His help.
|
Sewing is my creative outlet and how I stay sane somedays. I can go to the sewing room, close the door and just keep to myself. Some days, I may just sit and look at my stash or maybe take some out and handle it for awhile and imagine what I might do with it. At night when hubby is transfixed by the tube, I can sit and do hand work and not even hear the TV. I think most of us who quilt or have other interests have many reasons for doing so...all of them important.
