i was in my local quilt store the other day and they had cutting boards that said they sharpen your rotary blade when you cut with them I don't remember the brand - but has anyone used these and do they work?

wolfkitty 10-08-2010 08:31 PM

I don't know, but I would like to know, also!

amma 10-08-2010 08:33 PM

I have seen rulers that sharpen your blade when you cut with them, but not cutting boards...

Quiltforme 10-08-2010 08:36 PM

Just read about them in my McCalls Quiting magazine. It is supposed to have diamond dust or carbon something or other stuff on the side of the ruler. I have no idea if this would really work.

oops - meant ruler - not cutting board - meant to also comment on the cutting board you can cut and iron on it. wondered about that also. if these are good things I will put them on my xmas list - my kids are always bugging me on what I want for xmas. will just web shop and send them the links! better than getting a new toaster! lol

amma 10-08-2010 08:37 PM

I have been trying to remember who makes that ruler and cutter, but my brain isn't working LOL

That cutting board/pressing board combo sounds interesting :D:D:D

Sadiemae 10-08-2010 08:44 PM

Sounds interesting, but I don't understand how they would work.

luvTooQuilt 10-08-2010 08:44 PM

I was looking thru my Keepsake quilting book and saw 'The Cutting edge Rulers' - these are rulers with a diamond powder encrusted edge that maintains sharpness of your rotary blade..

QUILT4JOY 10-08-2010 09:49 PM

The edge has something like sandpaper that as you cut your blade is rolling along that edge getting a sharpening.

patricej 10-08-2010 11:43 PM

i once had the combination cutting/pressing board. it warped badly after a very short time, so was of little use on the cutting side. it did make a nice little portable lap desk though. i used it for years before it finally gave up the ghost.

tooMuchFabric 10-09-2010 05:27 AM

The combination cutting/pressing board is a flip-over thing.
It has a padded ironing surface on one side, and you fllip it over to cut on the other plastic side.
I found it inconvenient most of the time.
It is wonderful if you want to travel light and have limited space.

I have the one with a cutting mat on one side and ironing surface on the other (WalMart). I also have one from Olfa that folds like a bookand has a carrying strap. They are wonderful for classes and retreats as well as next to your sewing machine. I wouldn't be without one !! Excellent Christmas gift. The Olfa was more expensive but they both do the job.

Holice 10-09-2010 05:48 AM

I just bought the ruler with sharpening edge. Have not had a chance to use it but will next week at a retreat. I bought it more for the fact it is 37" long and not the sharpening feature. A bit pricy but those extra inches may be worth it.

featherweight 10-09-2010 06:07 AM

I would sure hate to have to replace my rulers with these. They a a little pricey.

cjomomma 10-09-2010 07:43 AM

I have the June Taylor press and cut mat and I love it. I keep it next to my machine and use it all the time, I haven't had a problem with the mat warping from the heat of the iron.

Baysidegal 10-09-2010 09:06 AM

If you to Pat Sloan's website..she has the rulers

Scraps 10-09-2010 09:30 AM

I bought the cutting/ironing fold up 'board' at JoAnne's with the 50% off coupon. I love it to travel with. I cut fabric and sometimes sew while 93 yr old Mom naps :-)

quiltingaz 10-09-2010 09:31 AM

I have the June Taylor mat/iron combination and it warped from heat of iron. Maybe should not use steam function.

ktmo815 10-10-2010 03:08 AM

Let us know how you like it.

lbelkin 10-10-2010 04:30 AM

You can go to nancysnotions.com It is called True Cut Rotary Blade Sharpener and it sells for $29.99 I'm pretty sure this is what your looking for.

jgriinke 10-10-2010 05:13 AM

Yes, I just got one of these and it does work. I had a blade in my 45mm cutter that needed a little help. It would cut OK, but I always had that one or two threads that it skipped. By the time I was done doing some cutting, it is good as new. I got the 6 1/2 x 12 and the price was around $17.00 or $18.00 dollars.
Can't remember what the cost of regular rulers are, but I do think they are worth it.

Delilah 10-10-2010 08:23 AM

I bought them, tried them, and sent them back. Maybe I don't know how to use them properly but they felt "scratchy", and it just seemed like the cutter didn't glide smoothly. As far as I'm concerned they are not worth the money.

Helen20906 10-10-2010 09:54 AM

I've come across info on this forum that you spray your fabrics. Is it after you wash, dry, and before pressing new fabrics brought into your sewing room? Or is it before making your quilt sandwich. When do you use spray starch?

dunster 10-10-2010 09:56 AM

I have this mat too, but the lines on mine do not measure correctly, or even square. I can't use them to line up a block at all, a big disappointment since that's what I bought it for. AND - it took me a while before I realized that the lines were not where they should be. Do you have the same problem with your mat?

Jo Belmont 10-10-2010 10:06 AM

I have read concerning the diamond-dust sharpening edge that they begin leaving a "grit" after a short while. I envisioned that it would sharpen your blade from the side, but if you ran over one of those pieces of "grit," you'd now have a nick in the blade to deal with.

The short of it: I decided to pass.

Annz 10-10-2010 10:30 AM

I like my cutting ironing board.. I also have cutting board that swivels/totates so you don't have to move while cutting. You just rotate the cutting top.

If I know what you are talking about it is not the cutting boards, it the rulers. Anyway that is what I saw at our fabric store.

judykay 10-10-2010 05:05 PM

If you remember who makes the cutting board that you can also iron on please pass the information on. I have always wondered with all the technology we have these days why someone has not come up with one. I have been thinking of making my own small pressing mat that I can sit on or next to my cutting board as I have a small space and need all the room I can get.

I just bought a 6"one. Sullivan's ...The Cutting Edge #38204. I hope to try it out this coming week and I'll let you know what I think about it.

Barbara Ann Fields 10-10-2010 05:32 PM

Thanks. I keep the ironing board up all the time and it takes up too much of my little space. I will check them out. Again, thanks

bonniebusybee 10-10-2010 05:54 PM

I bought a Dritz Blade Sharpener several years ago, and haven't bought a rotary blade since. Knowing my budget at the time, I'll bet it wasn't over $5 at that time.

Dee 10-10-2010 08:10 PM

Saw this ruler in Keepsake quilting.

The cutting board is on one side and the ironing board is on the other. I have one and it works great for measuring seams and then pressing them open.

I bought mine at Walmart. Like I said they work great.

Up4BigChal 10-11-2010 05:54 AM

I agree it's the Rulers that have the rotary blade sharpeners on them, seems weird that the cutting mat I just saw them in Keepsake quilting's catlog,

I have the same mat and I love mine too. I have one of those plastic 3 drawers storage unit on wheels that the mat fits perfectly on the top. I store fabric in the drawers and it rolls under my cutting table out of the way when not in use. When I am sewing I roll it out beside my chair where I am sewing and can turn and press or cut with out having to get up. So convenient. Also I have done alot of pressing on mine and it has not warped either. Now I have heard if you leave them in a car when it is hot out they can warp. The mat fits the top of that storage unit like it was made for it. I love my little set up. When piecing a quilt with hst or flying geese or something like that where you are doing alot of pressing and sewing this works great. I was going crazy getting up and down...up and down before I set this up. A cutting board that sharpens would be nice. My rotary cutter is about wore out.

BellaBoo 10-11-2010 08:29 AM

DH knows about the grit/honing stuff and he said don't worry about the grit flaking off until the blade was honed down to nothing. That's how long this diamond carbide stuff holds up. I ordered the 6-1/2in x 18-1/2 and the 4-1/2in x 8-1/2. I think it is great to have one product perform two different useful tasks. That will save me money over time.

They are great if you are only using them for a class. They will warp with continued use.
