I am shopping for a new iron. :) I was wondering if any one on the quilting board has any suggestions of irons that they could NOT LIVE WITHOUT :!: Any help would be appreciated. Please and Thank You. :thumbup:

My only needs in an iron are auto off and steam. The one I have now is a Rowenta but I would not spend that much on one of them again. I really liked the Black & Decker I had before (19.99 probably!) a lot better. One that uses tap water is nice too so you don't have to buy water for the steam.

I just bought the Oliso iron. I bought it at a sewing expo I decided that I really need an iron that will do the job. I had a rowenta but because of the open water resovoir a bug got into it and my other one a Black and Decor just quit so for me it just happened to be the right time. I love the fact I don't have to set it up and the quick heat up. It does have a time out feature that is 30 mins which is better then the rowent which was 8 minutes.

I've had a Rowenta and while I loved it, I killed it just as quick as any other one. My only requirements are steam, auto shut off and not very heavy. Just bought a Sunbeam that has 3 different setting for the amount of steam and was around $30.

I like my Shark Professional. Great steam and auto shut off. About 40 dollars at Walmart I think. I had the Shark lightweight and liked it also but knocked it off the ironing board and broke it. The Shark Professional is the best iron I have had since I quit buying the Rowenta. They didn't last any longer than the cheap irons and got tired of paying the big dollars for them. I did like their steam though but the Shark is just as good. Patricia

I prefer to use my cheap black and decker then my Rowenta

I bought a Sunbeam at Walmart a couple of years ago and I love it. It was about $25.00, has auto turn off, holds a lot of water, has lots of steam, and is guaranteed not to drip. Also comes with a cute little container that holds the right amount to fill it.

I have been using it for about 4 years and it is used daily as I sew almost every day. I make alot of quilt blocks and the tip of the iron is important and this one has a pointy end verses rounded. About $25.00 at Walmart

P2 Rowenta anti-drip.......couldn't live without it.

For me NO AUTO OFF. When I want to press a seam, I want to press it now, not when the iron is cold!!!!! I keep it and a light plugged in the same outlet and so when I leave my sewing room and the light is on, I know that the iron needs unplugged.

I went to Goodwill and bought one and it doesnt have steam and gets hot and works fine. -- J

I have a Bosch-got it on Amazon. I went through 5 Rowentas- they are a waste of money. I love my Bosch, best iron I've ever had.

I have had so many dif. Irons, from Black &Decker, to you name it...to Rowenta many Hi $$$$ and they all poop out on me or leek like a sieve cause i use the heck out of them... I just got an Oliso from Nancys Notions that was a special something like 60.00 it is wonderful....hot and heats up fast when thw auto off is workn.... so I am a fann of Oliso!!!! :-P :thumbup:

Yeppers!!! I have bought many from Good will or Salvation army.... like around 3.00 or so. and they poop out just like the $$$$$ so nt too much of a loss.... but I broke down and invested in the Oliso... I love it!! :thumbup:

I have an Oliso and love it because I always had a tendency to let it set down and I would scorch my ironing board cover.

Here's my take on irons. I look for one that has the heat control knob on "top." I do not like having to adjust it trying to get my fingers under the handle. That narrows down the field a lot. I would prefer the auto-off not be there, but that is regulated by law, not an option. I also consider the weight of the iron. I prefer lighter weight. I don't think brand is an issue, go for the features. My favorite iron is the one that is strictly dry. The ironing plate is solid, no holes or grooves to get caught in seam allowances. If you are not looking to buy a "forever" iron, get an inexpensive one, when it dies, try a different one. You haven't invested a lot and you can find out what you really like.

I just bought a very small iron from Amazon.com SteamFast Home & Away Iron. It was on sale for $18.00. And I am soooooo glad I got this. I sprained my hand on Feb 13 of this year, and it took both hands to lift my Shark Iron. This just fits in my hand, is so light weight, and stays hot! I had been looking at it for a while now, and am sooooooooooooo soooooooooo glad I got it.

My hubby bought me a panasonic cordless iron for my birthday a few years ago and I absolutely love it. I remember when I used to iron fabric how the cord would always catch on the fabric that I had already ironed and wrinkle it. I absolutely love not dealing with the cord all the time! I have to have an iron that steams and I like the fact that the water "tank" on this one is removable so you don't have to take the whole iron to the sink to fill it. Its just the best! Plus no dial, just touch buttons for the settings and a light that stops blinking when it's hot.

I got a Shark Professional-and after a couple weeks, took it back!! It leaked like a sieve, and I was tired to fighting with it. I was going to get an Oliso, but ended up getting a Rowenta Master at CostCo, and it is German made, not Chinese. I understand the German made ones are better-and so far, 4 months later, it is fantastic-no problems. Even though I hate the auto-shut-off, it heats up quickly, so by the time I have my block situated just right, it is hot again. Fingers Crossed!!!

I have a shark professional series iron. I have a hate hate relationship with this iron! The steam is phenomenal however it runs out of water quickly. Then whenever I want to press something the auto shut off already shut it off. I hate automatic shut off irons! Now the iron is leaking like a sieve. But it steams great. I will be following this posting with interest! I had 3 expensive Rowentas before this one and they all quit.

I have had 6 of the O iron. Now the 7th all replaced.
Have had other "just had to have" irons. All top brand and price. I most use the $10 one from the big box or from Goodwill. So don't sweat getting "the best" there is no such thing in my opinion. The brand one quilt likes and loves, another will hate. If you had to toss the %10 iron every year you would still be $$ ahead money wize from buying the high priced ones. Go to the big box and buy the least expensive that will do what you want it to do.

You and me both on the auto shut off. I HATE THEM!!!

I never could find an iron that completely satisfied all my quilting needs, I didn't want steam or one that automatically shuts off or anything fancy at all. Then in a class I was taking, the teacher told us to "buy a Black & Decker, the cheapest model. It gets hotter than any other iron." I thought ... yeah, right. But I bought one anyhow. She was right! Since I don't use steam, I just need a very hot iron. Now I stock up on the older Black & Deckers (only the older models are steamless) at the thrift stores. People seem to give them away right and left. When one gets broken which is not often, I have another in the wings waiting for me. I've never gotten one that doesn't work just the way I want it to. Oh and the big bonus is that I pay from one dollar to two-fifty for them depending on which store it is. 8-)

I love my rowenta, got it from target 5 years ago, still going strong, can't live without it, even with autoshut off, still heats up very fast so soon as you touch it it gets hot real quick, love it.

I have had my Oliso going on 5 years and I love it, Rowenta can't compare. I have had two and they leaked, one when it was 5 weeks old.

I prefer any iron I can get for under $30.00. I have had two Rowenta irons and they leaked water and did not do any better than a cheaper iron.

You must have a different model than mine. Takes at least 3-5 minutes to heat up. I want heat faster than that!!! :thumbdown:

Don't buy a Rowenta, or a euro-steam! My next iron will be a Black & Decker!! Patty

I hate auto-turnoff! So what iron do you have? I am thinking I may need a new one and have been looking and cannot find anything without an auto turnoff.

My favorite iron is a older Black and Decker travel iron that I got at a thrift store. It stays hot, it is small enough to take to classes or retreats and it DOES NOT have auto shut off. I think you can still find them on ebay. By the way. Thanks for the quilt shops you recommended to me when I went to Ca. I got to visit a few of them and absolutly loved the one in a big warehouse type place. Thanks.

I have been trying to decide if Oliso is worth the $$. How long have you had it do you love it $170 worth ( or show price was $150) I'm going to the Lancaster,PA show next week should I get it if they are there??? Help

This is the one I am using right now too. I have a large Black & Decker also, but it has auto shut off. I use it when I am doing a lot of ironing, and it won't have time to shut off.

I also do as someone else mentioned here. When my Ott light on my sewing cabinet is on, I know that the iron could be on too (I try to remember to turn it off as I leave the room). I just turn them both off on a power cord button when I'm done for the day.

I needed my replacement iron in a hurry, so bought a B&D at Walmart for $24. The auto off is a bit too quick, but they all had one. I like a little weight, and after hefting all the irons for half an hour and getting lots of strange looks I just grabbed one and took it home. So far it is working just fine! DH's shirts look good, and it stays on long enough to press seams. I miss my Norelco easy steam! It was the best ever!

i like my black and decker iron i bought a rowenta iron and it leaks found out if it was made in china they all leak i think

my rowenta leaked too and I paid way too much for it. I want something that stays on for longer than 8 mins, and gets really hot.

I can't stand the auto shut off, either! I want my iron ready when I'm ready.
