Should I?

Our local fabricland has a sale on right now buy 1 meter get 2 free on a lot of their fabrics. Normally they are super overpriced but this is a good sale. However I promised my oh that I wouldn't buy more fabric until I've finished the quilts I'm working on, but I really want more fabric! Should I go ahead and get some??? What would you do??

Tartan 02-12-2013 11:53 AM

I would look through my stash and see if I needed any backs for my quilt UFOs. Backs don't count on fabric moratoriums, right? Buy 1 get 2 free is too good to pass up for me!

tdeller 02-12-2013 11:56 AM

I'd have to buy. . .just sayin'! I agree that backs don't count.

CarolinePaj 02-12-2013 11:57 AM

Buy buy buy!!!!!

hugs

caroline

huntannette 02-12-2013 11:59 AM

I did!!! ;) think i have enough fabric for quite a while....but who can resist a good sale!!!

Thanks for the tip, MeldMac ... if you "need" it, it's a great deal. If you don't and it's "inventory" then, perhaps stick with your moratorium.

I'm starting to think of my backing for my PC quilt, so this could be a good deal ....... IF I can find something I like.

How long is the sale on for?
And ... is this at Southern Ontario Fabriclands?

quiltstringz 02-12-2013 12:37 PM

Agree - look to see wht you need backs for and see if they have anything that will work!!!

lynnie 02-12-2013 12:40 PM

They're giving it away for free, tske it.

auntpiggylpn 02-12-2013 12:56 PM

I've been on a fabric feeze since July 2012. I would break my non buying fabric streak in a heartbeat if I had this opportunity!

quilter1 02-12-2013 01:01 PM

I have bought a lot of fabric on these sales at Fabricland. If you need or want it- go ahead- just be choosy about which fabrics you pick. Not all of them are good quality there, but you can find gems too.

this was my first thought, too :) :)

Marycumi 02-12-2013 01:53 PM

Buy 1 get 2 free? Quilt Backs!!!

ArtsyOne 02-12-2013 02:31 PM

You need to ask? Even if I had to borrow the money until payday, this is a good deal if they're selling the first yard at their regular price and then adding an additional two yards for nothing. I'm no math whiz, but isn't that like getting a 66% discount?

I am in Winnipeg but if you are a member do they send you emails for sales? Not sure if all of them have the sale going, it is on until Fen 14 here.

Thanks MeldMac ... I called the two closest FLands to me ... both have a few of buy 1 get 2 free, but it doesn't sound like many. Wonder if they had it here earlier? and what is there now, might be what is leftover from the sale?

I'm currently not a member, so not haven't been getting the emails. Wasn't in the store the first month or two of the new year .... and I resent paying for a full year, later on. I don't understand why they don't pro-rate after a few months.

isewman 02-12-2013 03:34 PM

I agree with Carolinepaj. BUY-BUY-BUY. Me and my wife, are going on my quilt guild bus trip, in April. And I told the wife, I'm not on planing on buying fabric. Just tool & notion. I know what will happen. I'll buy fabric. And I really dont need more fabric. Don-isewman

Lori S 02-12-2013 04:34 PM

I would take par tin the sale ... but I would make a list of colors, themes, or otherwise area of the stash that need some addtions to work into quilt. Make the list ... if you can't come up with a list... than thats a good sign not to participate.

dunster 02-12-2013 04:43 PM

Not sure what you mean by you promised your oh, but to me a promise is a promise. I would talk to the person I made the promise to and see if we could come to some agreement, but if not then get busy finishing that quilt you're working on.

susie-susie-susie 02-12-2013 04:59 PM

I would buy some fabric. As much as I could afford. After all, free is free. That is great for backings since they usually take so much fabric. Go for it.

rebeljane 02-13-2013 06:03 AM

To good a deal to pass up - go for it!

TinkerQuilts 02-13-2013 06:56 AM

Do they have this sale often? If not, I would go quickly and at least see if they have something you must have? I love to shop - doesn't necessarily mean you have to buy.

mighty 02-13-2013 08:15 AM

I think you should at least look and see if there is any you can not live without!

kathbug 02-14-2013 03:37 AM

I think as much as you have made an agreement with your husband I would stick by or talk with him about the fab sale and work it out together.

Aurora 02-14-2013 03:50 AM

That is why my car has a trunk; otherwise, known as a temporary storage unit. It use to hold that pair of shoes I couldn't live without, now it has graduated to a TFSU (temporary fabric storage unit).

quilt queen 02-14-2013 04:41 AM

Oh Boy! wish I could find a sale like that...I too, have stopped buying fabric...trying to use from my stash..but for this kind of sale I would load up !!!If Canada wasn't so far, I make a road trip!

Steady Stiching 02-14-2013 05:45 AM

I'd buy all the blenders I could get my hands on and stay away from the focal fabrics...learned from experiance.

jbj137 02-14-2013 07:15 AM

If you have a $$ stash, go for it.

I never heard of "oh" -"old husband"? Whatever, whoever. I agree with dunster, but next time there will have to be some discussion about how much of a say you should have over oh's personal expenditures. Compromise, unless you're talking about your money vs a joint resource. Financial advice from experts always seems to stress that in a relationship each person should have a bit of the budget for unquestioned personal use. Neither party gets to control all the money - no matter who gets the paycheck or the bigger paycheck. If you are living with this person and carrying your share of the load in whatever manner, whether mopping, cooking, grocery shopping, dusting, listening to his most annoying complaints and most boring rants, etc. - it all counts. If he doesn't agree, you have bigger problems than whether or not to buy fabric when you feel like it.

ktbb 02-14-2013 09:12 AM

I'd consider what my partner would say and decide how important that relationship is compared to my/your relationship with quilting...

bunbytes 02-14-2013 10:19 AM

Oh come on, it's to good to pass up.

MargeD 02-14-2013 10:54 AM

With the price of fabric, buy it, especially backing and background fabric, which goes quickly. When I find a good sale on fabric, I try to stock up on white and beige tone on tone fabrics for backgrounds, as well as backings for a quilt. The exception would be like a backing fabric deciding that it wants center stage to become the focal fabric in a new quilt. You have to listen to the fabric, right???

newbiequilter 02-14-2013 10:57 AM

I have been on a self-imposed fabric buying moratorium since Jan 1, 2013.....but....but....but....I ran across a deal I could not pass up. LQS quality fabric (actually from a closed fabric store) in nice big chunks at a really good price. 21 yds for $83. I had to stop there but I am seriously thinking about going back for some more....a lot of neutrals.....calling to me....

solstice3 02-14-2013 11:41 AM

If it is a rare sale and you really need some stuff...get it. Don't buy for the sake of buying... I think that is a fair compromise

DOTTYMO 02-14-2013 11:44 AM

Be prepared . Buy for your next projects just in case you are locked at home.

ArchaicArcane 02-14-2013 03:50 PM

Hi Ladies! I'm peeking my head out of the vintage machines area for this...

One thing that's worth mentioning about Fabricland is that these sales happen several times a year. Why? Their prices are so jacked up that "everyone" knows that you never buy from Fabricland unless it's on sale. A really good couple of examples:

I was in a LQS today, they were having an outlet sale, I looked at their regular prices and the sale prices. (Note, I'm a new enough quilter I'm not a moratorium for fabric)

Batiks: $16 on sale for $8 if you bought more than 2m (FL price $18 - $22 and rarely on sale, and not for this sale.)
Quilt Cotton: $15 - 18 on sale for $7 or $5 for more than 2m. (FL price $18 -25)
Klutz glove: $26.99 regular price. (FL price $42)
Fons and Porter Quilting Gloves: $5.75 (FL - $8.99)
Olfa 24x36 cutting mat: $70 (FL $129.99)
Schmetz Quilting needles: $4.75 (FL price over $8.)

Sort makes it easy to see how they can have these "sales" eh? Since I became a dealer for a major supplier in Canada, I've been even more disgusted with FL now that I've seen "wholesale" prices. I still have a membership, because I can't order fabric from my supplier, but that may soon come from over the border, or the LQS, since the prices are way better.

Tabatha 02-14-2013 04:20 PM

I know what the selection is like at Fabricland, not great and often not worth it. If you can find DESIGNER quilting cottons at that price then go for it. DO NOT buy Fabricland brand fabrics!! They are often off grain and can not be straightened, they are the cheapest of the cheap!!

And the last "blenders" I bought at FL didn't blend because they had an uneven dye to them. Ugh. Beige was green in some spots and red was orange, and not where I would have seen it unless I'd inspected both sides before they cut it.

I've already broken my to promise to myself not to buy any fabric this year. A cute LQS is closing so the owner can return to college to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. How could you not buy her fabrics? Have to help her, right?! I'll try to be better - maybe - next time!! :) :)

Jannie 02-14-2013 07:22 PM

Never seen a sale that good. Probably a good thing because I wouldn't be able to pass up such a good deal.

meldmac 02-14-2013 09:18 PM

Well I caved and bought 6 meters of fabric to make a lap quilt. Will be my next project after the quilt for my son.
