Right now I'm using half of a Singer school table for cutting. I can put whatever machine I'm using into the table or put the insert back in it and just put the machine on half of the table and use the other half for cutting, or if I need to iron yardage I put a piece of quilted fabric over the whole thing and use it as a pressing station. It's pretty versatile.

This is my sewing room. I have a large 1" thick plywood top (approx. 50" x 70"). It sits on top of two dressers that we bought at Farm and Fleet for almost nothing. They face out and each has 6 drawers. Between them (covered with a fabric curtain) is storage space.

I have a banquet table on bed risers that I use. That way I'm not bending as much.

I use the breakfast room table from our other house. That house had a large breakfast room and small dining room. This table was too large for our breakfast room here and I didn't like it in the dining room. So I bought some bed risers and made it into my cutting table. With the leaves in, it's pretty big.

I'm gradually emptying the boxes underneath. I'll replace the remaining cardboard boxes with plastic ones so I can see what's in them. I've already had a couple "Oh, I forgot about that" moments with the cardboard boxes.

My sewing area is tiny, so I needed my table to do everything. I got the Bekant adjustable height desk from Ikea: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S09022516/ I can easily raise it to cut, or lower to sew. It has poor ratings on the website, but I'm very happy with it.

The power brick on mine died (like many others, which is why it has poor ratings). I filled out the help form on the website, and they had a new one to me in a couple days at no charge, even though I didn't have my receipt. It works better than ever now.

I use a drafting board that my husband's employer got ride of because they got a new one. I can raise or lower it to what height I want. He also built my quilt frame from a pattern we bought off the internet. It has 3 rollers, one for each layer. It also can be raised or lowered to what height you want. He also puts the quilt, batting and backing on for me because he is faster.

coffeecozy 04-19-2018 01:38 AM

mine is the back-to-back expedit shelves (don't see those on the website anymore) with a butcher block counter (also ikea) and rollers under it. it is great to be able to move it when i want but it never moves without a good push. i got the idea from someone here and the ikea hacks website.

I bought 2 cabinet bases from Habitat for Humanity, painted them and put a door I had around the house on top of it. It's the perfect height for me.

I was thinking of heading to Ikea today. I need a couple of cabinets to put an ironing table on top of. My cutting table is 4 feet by 4 feet. I love it. It is the perfect height to stand at and cut. Lots of storage underneath. Look on Pinterest for Ikea sewing room ideas.

coopah 04-19-2018 05:02 AM

I bought a table top from IKEA about 7 years ago. Then bought legs that were adjustable by hand. Now IKEA has a table that can be adjusted electrically. It's similar to the one Martelli has, but not totally as adjustable as Martelli's. I bought legs that flanged out instead of were straight...big mistake. (Sometimes husband's are wrong!!) I can't store as much under it because of that. I don't have the name of the IKEA adjustable table, but it sure looked good. My IKEA table has held up very well.

Where did you find this mirror table folding stand? It would be perfect for my space restrictions!
thanks

JoAnns, about 20 years ago. Still perfect. I wonder how many yards of fabric I've cut on this table. (and recut and recut smaller and smaller (: )

I'm using the bottoms of custom built bookcases. These are enclosed with doors to hide my magazines and quilt books. I added a 4 x 8 x 5.8" piece of plywood to the top and then a small trim piece around the edge to hide the edge of the plywood. Added brackets about halfway down between the 2 bookcases to add another piece of plywood to house my smaller totes of scraps, fat quarters and pre-cuts. I purchased a self-healing cutting mat, one side is green and the other side is black, both with markings for the top. The top photo shows the newest cutting mat. The other photos were before I changed out mats. You can also see the changes I made in my fabric shelves as well as the big board on my ironing board. Bottom 2 photos were when I had just moved in and was still figuring out how to arrange things. The top photo is how it is now.

My table is like Kalama Quilts. I bought it in Arizona 20 some years ago and wouldn't trade it for the world. Perfect height and mostly big enough except when I load it up with too much stuff! Good luck at Ikea.

No pics with me right now, I am at DD's helping with new grandson. I hope you don't mind, I'm linking my Pinterest board showing my sewing furniture. My cutting/craft/storage table is in our family room (I do not have a dedicated sewing room) and takes up a lot of space. I have a lot of storage in it. If I were doing it again, I would use one less Expedit unit (each unit is 4 cubes). Currently, there are 4 of the Expedits; 1 turned to open on left end, 1 across back, 2 stacked on right end. I would probably go with turning both end units to open to side. The problem with tht is that I wouldn't have storage for long, deep things like stiff interfacing that I don't want to fold.
Right now, I can just roll it and it fits. www.pinterest.com/piecefuljoy/quilting-areas

If you need more info than what is given in the pictures, I will try to help you!

peaceandjoy 04-19-2018 08:02 AM

I should also mention, there is are Ikea hacker's pages where folks post Ikea products altered or used other than as originally intended by Ikea. I love Ikea, but we do not have one near our home. I only get to visit occasionally when I visit DD.

Mine is a custom made one by my husband. My sewing room looks a lot different these days. My sewing machine has relocated and I expanded into what was the guest room.

It is 4' x 5', a plywood base and a Formica top. He also made the shelf above my table as well as the cabinet, the wicker drawer cabinet it sits on was bought at a local store.

JanelleTrebuna 04-19-2018 08:16 AM

That is brilliant!!! Custom made?

Yes, he builds it and I love it. He did the same thing for my Bailey Pro 15, made a table for it to sit in. My sewing machine in in the closet, we took off the doors and he built a desk into it to give me more room to walk around.

This is what our local quilt shop does when there are special sale days and they need more cutting space. The height seems just about perfect.

Mine is from IKEA Kallax. 4.5x6’. Used 1” melamine that we found at Home Depot for $20. Added two cup holders for my drinks, and a trash can.DH put it on casters so it’s easily moved, and the whole thing is put together so it can easily be taken apart in the event we ever move

I have 3 folding banquet tables. 2 are lengthwise next to each other and one sits at the end of the two as a T. I have bed risers under them also. I have plastic tubs with fabric under them.

I bought 3 of these shelves from Target. 2 are back to back horizontally for my cutting table. We were going to put casters under them, but I like this height for my body. The third set of shelves do have the casters. I have made it into a large pressing area.

Haha I have this.

It’s great, has an ironing board too! :D I used to have my bigger cutting matt taped to a folding table but now I have one of my machines on there so I just put it on the floor

I have enjoyed using the Norden Gateleg Table from Ikea. (see link above for photo and info). It is made of birchwood. I added caster wheels to raise it up and make it mobile. It is perfect for small spaces because the 2 leafs fold down when not in use. The 6 drawers in the middle go across the width of the table and give plenty of storage space for quilting notions.

meanmom 04-20-2018 03:31 AM

I would suggest something like Cindi has. Ikea has all kinds of things like that. Not what you asked for but I just bought some of the Ikea spice shelves to mount on my wall to keep my rulers in. I currently have a peg board which is ok but it seems the ruler I always need it the one on the back of the peg. Also some of my rulers don't have holes in them for hanging. I want to paint them white before I put them up. I saw it on pinterest. So many interesting ideas out there. Ikea is about 5 miles from me, so I can go often. I have physical therapy about 1/2 mile from Ikea, so I might go today.

SusieQOH 04-20-2018 04:41 AM

Mine is piled so high with stuff you wouldn't even be able to see it. I've been on a rampage lately and my sewing room shows it!

Sheep Farmer 04-20-2018 06:00 AM

Funny.... I had a pic of your cutting table saved on my Pinterest board for when I get around to making a cutting table. LOL

Meanmom, your ruler holder reminds me of another fun ruler holder, drawer from a defunct treadle cabinet. So pretty.

Mary Rita T 04-20-2018 08:32 AM

I use part of my kitchen counter which has good lighting and is an excellent height. Although this makes my house look messy, my body benefits from the need to move around frequently.

petthefabric 04-20-2018 02:36 PM

The base of my cutting table is 3 standard drawer units designed for the garage from Lowes. They're kitchen counter height. Self assembly. Sitting on top is 8' x 2' melamine covered plywood cut to 72". The mat is OLFA 2 piece that is 70" long. I can walk around it and don't need to lean over it to reach into the center. It has LOTS of storage.

JanBech 04-21-2018 05:32 AM

I put mine together from Ikea furniture and love it! Sorry I don't have a picture, but I will describe it..... I bought 2 "dressers" and put them back to back in the center of my room. Each long side has 8 drawers: 4 small across the top and then 4 larger ones. So that gives me 16 drawers. Each dresser measures 19.5" wide so the width of the 2 together is 39". They are 63" long and 37.5" high. Could not be more perfect! My 3'x5' cutting mat fits on top. The dressers come in several colors: black, white, country blue, country red. After my daughter saw what I had, she bought the same. So sturdy that when I work on a large quilt (like doing the binding), I put my machine on top and stand to sew. I love it! Cost is about $300 per dresser. Hope you consider this...you will love it.

This cabinet is actually for paper crafts (it's from the Martha Stewart line). DH put the extended top on it. I bought it because the drawers were shallow and wide. All my rulers fit in the drawers, including the 25" square one. Also, holds my mats except the biggest. It came with dividers for the drawers that you can arrange anyway you want.

My DH built my cutting table which can be seen on this thread:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/mission...n-t276255.html
I customized it for my needs so its just perfect for the space. Good luck, there are a lot of great ideas posted already. Some a bit pricey and others repurposing, so a little bit for everyone budget, taste and space.
