Same here. Saves a lot of time for me.

I wish that someone would invent a gadget that would unwind the bobbin & wind the thread back onto a spool.

Gelswood 02-23-2011 11:16 PM

My bobbin winder on my machine broke and when I took it to the repair shop to get fixed he recommended a bobbin winder. Although I didn't like it at first, I have come to like it. I don't think it winds the bobbins as even as my sewing machine did.

I haven't read every post so don't know if someone mentioned this tip earlier.

I got a Sidewinder for Christmas but I have a Viking Sapphire 830. It didn't work on my bobbins, but that's because the thread unwinds the wrong way after being filled. I found if I put the bobbin in upside down, it winds the bobbin correctly and I can use the Sidewinder if I want to for my Viking.

I have one I seldom use, but when I do I fill lots of bobbins and put in my bobbin holder, usually the cream colored thread I use on my midarm quilter.

My biggest problem is I don't have a pernament place to put it so its in and out of the cabinet.

I don't have to unthread my machine to wind a bobbin so my machine does just fine. Don't need a sidewinder.
I have a singer 2010 workhorse and she's a great machine, not fancy but reliable.

Marilynsue 02-24-2011 07:32 AM

I love my sidewinder. I use 2 machines regularly and can wind several bobbins at a time. Also, I go to several retreats throughout the year and it is handy to prepare a few extra bobbins "to go".

Hah ! It must have gotten jealous of the SW and decided to straighten its act up :)

I am glad to know about using the sidewinder with the Sapphire Viking machine to put bobbin in upside down!
If I ever decide to get a SW I hope I remember that tip!

If your Viking is winding the bobbin poorly have it looked at because sometimes there is a minor adjustment to make the bobbing wind evenly (I have had that problem in the past)

Mind you that I have 2 older sewing machines - a Viking from the 70's and a Bernina from the 80's - Bobbins can be filled on my sewing machines

Is it something that is needed in a sewing room. Isn't just as easy to use you sewing machine to fill your bobbins - Does everyone have one of them?

I have a sidewinder that I use all the time because I have two old machines that do not do bobbins and it is much faster for me to make bobbins using my sidewinder.

gmloves2quilt 02-24-2011 09:08 AM

I have a sidewinder also and love it .I just fill 5 or 6 bobbins with what ever thread i'm useing when i'm quilting, and i don't have to untread my machine ever time. I'm going to fill my bobbins with all my other colors i use the most and that way they will be done when i need them just not as many. I love mine.

I like it because I don't have to un-thread my machine. I received it as a "gift" from a wonderful woman that is here on the forum. I really like it!!!

jheinen 02-24-2011 02:57 PM

I have a Sidewinder and I fill bobbins for my Bernina 170 without problems. I like the Sidewinder because it fills the bobbins much fuller than the Bernina bobbin winder and I don't have to remove the top thread when I am sewing. I really like it.

I agree, about having to buy an extra spool of thread or having to unthread the machine to wind... why bother? When I start a project I usually wind two bobbins right at the start and then I can sew for quite awhile before running out. I can think of other things to spend $30.00 on and it doesn't take that much of my time up.

I know some people who fill like 30-40 bobbins at a time and they use one of these. Usually when they are getting ready to go to our quilt retreat. Me I wind as I need them. lol.

I could not get the thread to wind on the bobbin correctly or very tight like my machine does................took it back to Joann's.............the lady there said this is the fourth one returned today, what's going on. Not worth the money IMO.

I think if you give it a try you will like it.

Ditto
Mine is Pink the profit went to Breast Cancer Research paid $22 AU

I have one and love it. I don't have to unthread the machine to wind a bobbin.

I've seen them on sale for less than $20 or use a coupon from JoAnn's, Hancocks, etc.

broomstix 02-25-2011 09:39 AM

If i am sewing a project . running out of bobbin, i just reach into bobbin box pull another out , pop it into the machine. Off i go again.

I have 60 extra bobbins. use mostly white to sew. i take the time to just fill bobbins. then when these run out. Store them until i have to rewind again.

LOVE MY SIDE WINDER FOR ALL THE REASONS LISTED ABOVE!

beckya81 02-25-2011 12:20 PM

I have a pfaff and it winds mine. I love it.

sewlilly 02-25-2011 08:11 PM

I have a sidewinder and I can't get it to work right - I have tried numerous times and just get frustrated and go back to the machine.

I have one also and I use it for this same reason and I love it. I got mine at JoAnns with a 50% off coupon. Some times I take it to sewing classes and let others use it.

nanzs01 02-26-2011 06:48 AM

I bought a Sidewinder when my 40 year old Necchi decided it was too tired to wind bobins. I don't like how the bobins turn out. They are just so-so. Thankfully I got a new sewing machine. Now, I just wind 2 or 3 bobins in the color I'm using (depending on the size of the project) so they are ready and waiting. Works for me.

Jbarrow 02-27-2011 07:47 PM

My sister-in-law has one...We tried it but she said that it didn't wind the thread in a way that the maching liked....kept having issues when sewing with the bobbins that were wound with this...so no...don't need this esp when machine does this for you!!!
