Sign of the times.
Have been noticing there seems to be more scrappy quilts being done..........
I feel it's because people are trying to save money and still want to work at their passion of quilting. I love scrappy quilts and enjoy seeing all the beauties everyone comes up with. I make mostly scrappy quilts because I love them and have done many other types too. They seem to be my first love and I am so happy when someone gives me a bag of scraps.......... I know there must be something wrong with me.... right????? What's your take on this????????? |
I too love scrappies. Am busy working on several that are paper pieced. Check out the link for scrappy quilt show here on the board. Lots of great quilts.
Yes there are lots of great scrappy quilts shown here................
Scrappies are great!
I love scrappies too! Even the ugliest fabric looks good if it's cut small enough. LOL!
I am a scrappy..love them and I hate to waste anything.
I also love scrappy quilts. and i have been know to cut up material to make scraps.
Being the oldest of 11 I can't waste even a little bit of fabric. I have lots of scraps and friends are starting to give me theirs. Right now I probably have enough scraps for at least 20 scrappy quilts. It is fun to come up with ideas for designs using scraps.
I love scrappy; wish I made more of them. Still pay the same price for all those scraps.
a scrappy is among my favorite-I have always been drawn to them.they are eye candy
Scrappy quilts are my favorites. I save pictures into a quilts folder in my pictures for future reference. That way I always have new ideas on how to use up my scraps.
Scrappy is a great way to go.
I love scrappy too. It's a great way to use up leftovers from "organized" projects or showcase many fabrics. I'm doing a project for my 90yr old MIL, using her stash to make each grandchild(29) a quilt from her. My difficulty is choosing patterns and actually cutting her fabrics. It sound silly but I remember helping her make the kids many things. I decided to just close my eyes and jump in though. So I'm going to make my first one with this group: http://www.quiltingboard.com/blocks-...209515-12.html :D

I am hooked on scrappies! I get scraps from a woman who makes cotton sheets, and love trying to make quilts with the small pieces. I am also working on my first string quilt made from scraps from a LQS--it is addicting! The LQS gives away strips to whoever makes charity quilts. My quilts go to Children's Hospital through my local guild. Best use of scraps ever!
Nothing wrong with liking to make scrappy quilts. I like them because there is so much different fabric that you never get bored looking at your quilt. You always can see something different. I agree people are trying to save money and scraps are a great way to go.

Scrappys are my favorite just love putting the colors together
I can't even remember the last time i made a quilt that wasn't a scrappy!
Scrappy quilts have always been a favorite of mine! They are beautiful!
I have to confess that I did not keep scraps. But now that I see some beautiful scrap quilts I have started to keep scraps. I hope I use them.
I love scrappy quilts! Took awhile to build up the stash to use them and so glad of it! Still learning to not be so controlling in choosing colors ;)
You mean there is something other than scrappies?really? Scrappies have been and will always be my favorite! I do wonder if the cost of quilting, has created more scrappy quilters.
I love scrappies! With a tighter budget, I still enjoy fabric shopping but do it in a different way now. Instead of buying a yard or two or three :-), I get 1/3 or 1/4 yard cuts to add to my strip bins. Gives me lots of variety and shopping satisfaction!

You may very well be correct about the reason, but, personally, scrap quilts don't appeal to me at all and I've cancelled two quilting magazine subscriptions because all they have in them are patterns and articles related to scraps. I tried making one once to see what all the fuss was about and hated it so much I gave it to the dog to use.:o Good thing there are all different tastes in the world of quilting!

I do hold onto my scraps though. Every now and again I'll see a post of someone looking for scraps so I'll fill an envelope and mail it off. I like big block quilts myself but I have made some quilts with 1 inch finished squares. I don't have the inclination to mess with little futzul's (my word) of left over fabric. |
Being on disability, I can't afford to just run out and buy at whim. I was going thru a very tough time, money wise, but determined to quilt anyway, I pieced a scrappy..It became my favorite...Now when I buy fabric for an "organized" quilt, I look at the remnants and try to picture it in a scrappy!~!
I do think that scrappies are quite popular.. just look at the quilt magazines , lots of scrap quilts. I think it was the perfect storm ... high cost of fabric, small pre-cuts with lots of colors and patterns, and the need for more color in tough times.
I have always liked the randomness of color in scrap quilts. Truth be known I have traded yardage for "premium" scraps. |
Scrappies are my favourite. It never ceases to amaze me how many different variations can be made using up leftovers.
Scrap quilts are my favorites too...I have a lot of fabric to use and am trying not to go shopping unless I need borders, sashing or backing. I have had to be more thrifty since my husband passed away 8 years ago...but have always loved scrap quilts.

Beauties are right! Scrappies are the best!
Wow - didn't think there would be this much response to my post........... so happy to see so many scrap happy people.
Wouldn't it be great if we could all meet with our BIG bins of scraps and trade........ I am always willing to take scraps of the hands of people who don't want them. Thanks for all your responses. |
i only have scraps because i made other things.
i started quilting because of log cabins. i made one this year, and it is a testimony to the life of needle and thread and i have lived so far. i don't shop for shopping's sake for anything - fabric included. i don't really understand just having a whole lot of fabric in a cupboard or a bin or whatever. i shop because i need something or i am staring a new project. i don't really want for anything, so i always have something better to do than shop you know? i buy fabric for projects. the leftovers go in the bin. it took me 20 years to have enough fabric to make that log cabin. i suspect it might be another 20 before i have enough fabric to do another one. but i sure do like scrappy quilts :) aileen |
luv scrappies.....maybe because of all the colors.....
for all the reasons above I love scrappies, plus I am a da__ Yankee. have to use it up, and wear it out. Hate to waste even a scrap too small to sew - those go in dog beds for the shelter.
If you join the moratorium on buying quilting fabric for 2013 it encouraged you to use every little scrap...a good thing in my sewing room!
Corny I know, but scrappy makes me happy! :-)
I think you are right. The other day I saw a post about the confetti quilt and started cutting up my scraps for confetti. Being on SS I save where I can. Besides I love scrappies.
There are a couple of board members who host fabric swaps in various sizes: FQ's, 10.5", 6.5", 5", 2.5", 1.5" squares and a 2.5"strip I think. Check the swap/trade threads. Great way to get lots of variety if you need that. :D
Personally, I love scrappy quilts - but the fabric isn't coming from scrap bags. When I shop, I buy half-yard cuts (maybe a yard if I love it) and and put them in my stash. Those are cut up for my "scrap" quilts.
I love scrap quilts. That's all my mother made. She used scraps from sewing clothes. I love to study her quilts and remember dresses I made for myself, my daughter, and the ones mom made and scraps from home dec like curtains, table cloths, etc. Brings back memories.
I do scrappiest but do not enjoy as much as a balanced quilt with the same patterns on both sides. Art quilts are also an area I don't like . I can admire the skill and art but not the finished project at times makes me very uncomfortable. .
