When you donate quilts to local charities, do you sign them?
I donate a couple quilts every year to a charity auction. I don't sign them but will date them.
We have embroidered signature block with our groups name that goes on the back. I sew a small block to batting with my initials and date.
SOMETIMES I had my label to them, but usually not.
I haven't signed mine. Putting the date on it is a good idea, though.
I usually just sign my first name and my state, so the recipient knows where the love came from...
We label our Project Linus quilts and people are more than welcome to put a tag with their info on them if they choose. There is a poem that is usually tied to them with the motto and what our mission is.

The more info you include on your label the more monetary value it adds for future generations.
On my labels I include (hand written): My name, who it is for, name of quilt, the date, state and town. And for charity quilts I write who the quilt was made in honor of. These were raffle quilts. |
I usually go by the guidelines of each charity, but full name is never an option because of security issues now. If anyone wants to say "thank you" to you, they can do it through the charity. I've received phone calls and notes that way.
I belong to the Am. Sewing Guild and they provide the labels for you to put on charity projects they are organizing. If I'm doing projects for another organization, I put a label on acknowledging that organization. If I'm just randomly giving stuff to charities, I don't put a label on it.
I chose to remain anonymous when I donate my quilts.
I do label all of mine for the AAQI.
I just put two iitials of my name. otherwise don't identify them. i believe it is a security issue.
I use my initials, date & city, state.
every quilt i make has a label that contains at the bare minimum- my name, city, state, date and CARE INSTRUCTIONS/FIBER CONTENT.
i list if i used cotton or poly batting, cottons or blends, and how to wash/dry it if the quilt is for a specific person or event i may add that to the label but the minimum is always there |
I initial and date mine.
I know that the Linus Project asks you to sign the quilt.
I do the year, city and state.
I sign them: with love from your quilting fairy. :-)
when i had a professinal machine i did, hte label designs were fabulous. like a train with a smoke border or an airplane with tail flags,
now i just pu my name and date, really small |

Places like Veteran's Hospitals, any Hospice, convalescent home will not allow a signature. I had one tell me, they just cut them out. They don't want the complication of the donor being harassed, plus the fact, your signature says you would like orders or communication. Keep safe and leave them blanik.
People who receive charity quilts are in the habit of finding the quilter (and it's not as if you're putting contact details on there) and harassing them? Seriously?
(I'm in the middle of making a quilt to be raffled for charity, so I'm pondering whether or not to sign it.) |
no, I don't .. I like to be anonymous. thanks for the post.. I think there is no right or wrong.

Same here! I don't attach a label to any of my charity quilts. |

a whole lot of ideas here. the quilt fairy I'd like to use. may I? That is a favorite since my quilts are for children. Thanks !
my initials are obscene.. ha ha.. young and dumb after getting married and keeping my maiden name.. someone should have told me ! and, no I don't want anyone googling me to find if I can quilt another one. I do all my stuff at my own pace, slow like the tortoise. |
I always sign, date, city, state, etc., with a perm. marker, on the area that the binding covers up. I do this to document the quilt. On other quilts I make and attach a label--I read somewhere that a lot of the older quilts were done this way. Folks back in the "good ole days" were a lot more modest than us folks, :)
I dont!

I see no reason not to sign your name, put on a date, and maybe a Bible verse or favorite saying. I'm not worried about being "stalked" or "harassed" by a veteran or someone in a nursing home. And I'm not looking for recognition or future customers. (Just a few things another poster felt was a concern to her.) But there is nothing wrong (in my own opinion) with putting this info on a quilt even when for charity.
An artist painting a picture to donate would still put their signature on the canvas. I think of all the antique quilts we have today that have no signature and what a loss that is. I don't think those ladies thought their quilts would ever be so valued or sought after as they are today and maybe ours never will be, but should they survive into the next century, I think it would be for posterity to have this info on the quilt, if for no other reason. :-D Ultimately, it's a personal choice with no right or wrong answer. Just do what feels right and you can't go wrong. :D |
Our group puts a label on all of our quilts. We make them and they say:
Love and Comfort To You Coos Sand 'n Sea Quilters "Quilts For Giving" Oregon |
I also put a label on each quilt that I make.
Our Guild has a label that we put on each quilt we give. It has the Guilds name, City and State, that way they can send a thank you if they desire.
For every quilt I make, even the two I donated to auctions I sew in a washable label, and embrodiered initials in a corner. There isn't any thing someone can find out about you that can't be found on the internet.
I use my first name, last initial, City, State and date it.
Not usually.
I write on the face of the hanging sleeve, the charity, when, where, whatever I want to say. I use a permanent pen. There is lots of space if the quilt has many contributors to its construction.
This is in addition to a regular label. |
One of group who is very talented makes a label with the name of our group and Co,State. She puts one on every quilt we give out.
