I think the kids are gone most of the time anyway.

The floor plan calls it a bedroom, but there is no bed in it, and there are no clothes in the walk-in closet. I just call it my room.

I have a two bedroom apartment, so one bedroom is where my sewing machine, ironing board is left up all the time then there is a tv, oak desk for copier/computer/chair are there along with my meditation chair and lamp/table. I also put up my little quilting frame when needed 27" x 39". A double bookcase for quilting and other books and one side is also is used for small fabric projects and quilting tools. In other words, I live in this room most of the time. I would like more room but make do with what I have.

Sewing space vs Sewing studio---state of mind :)..... I have the master bedroom and closet, this is my 'room', but I guess in reality it is my 'studio'. Everything but the kitchen is in there.... (of course the kitchen is just around the corner) LOL!

I started with a sewing space, my kitchen table.
Finally took down my home office and turned into a sewing room. Gathered all supplies in one place.
It is so nice. I now can find what I need when I need it.
To me a studio is separate from the house with lots of storage space.

My sewing room is also my computer room (it used to be the "study"). I replaced my desktop computer with a laptop, so my sewing paraphernalia could have maximum space. I won't think of it as a "studio", though, until I get a "real" sewing table to replace the computer desk. BTW, if you put your printer next to your sewing surface, it makes a great quilt support!

My "sewing room" is in a spare bedroom. I have a hanging cabinet, four tables, 2 chests, and a large dresser, 2 rolling drawers. Everything is full! I did take about two weeks to arrange my fabric on boards that fit in the drawers of the dresser. I love it! I can open a drawer and see at a glance what fabric I have. Before it was all stacked, I use the term loosely, in the drawers and tubs. Still have a lot of cleaning out to do but had to stop to sew a baby quilt for a new great grandbaby-to-be.

I think you can call your 'space' what ever you want....its your air !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
to me a sewing room is where your mother went to sew your school clothes and mend your brothers pants....A marvelous "Sewing Studio" is were we sewers/piecers/quilts go to CREATE marvelous objects......

My mother sewed on the breakfast-nook table in a little 6 foot square area where all seven of us kids ate most meals, unless she was sewing. The room had a bench on each side with an upholstered lid, her fabrics stored inside the benches, and a table between. It was wall to wall benches and table. Her machine was rarely put away...a 1940's Singer. She sewed wedding trousseau's, took in alterations, made all our clothing, reupholstered when needed, AND she quilted! The "rag man" came by with his huge truck once a week and he gave her the "pick of the crop" at no charge because they were good family friends. (My dad was the head maintenance man at Chas Pfizer Co in their Groton, CT plant.)

All of our homes, up to now, were big enough that I always had my own sewing / craft room. I now use a corner of our master bedroom. It puts me "at risk" of DH visits, which seem to be constant some days. I'm ok with the space, would love to have much more of it, but we've downsized since retiring so I'll deal with it. I try not to identify with "my space", other than it's where I go to do what I like to do. I don't think sewing has anything to do with space available (unless you're making money at it) so much as what to do with DH! =D

I have a large spare bedroom just for sewing (OK, I do share it with the cat, but she's very understanding.) I always called it the sewing room, but my DH began calling it my studio, so I guess it is. I doubt there is any rigid definition. I think even a nook where you manage to set up your machine occasionally can be called a studio cause that's where you let your creativity flourish.

I guess mine is a studio because it is separate from the house and dedicated to quilting. It has has two sewing machines, an embroidery machine and a LA. It's 14' X 24'. DH insisted on a recliner so he could come visit me! I call it my Quilting Shed. There's a cutting table set up in the middle. Fabric along one wall and a 6' ironing board sitting on a dresser along the other. I sure enjoy being out there. We built a deck between the shed and the house, so it's easy to get back and forth!

I have a small 1,000 sq ft home with 3 bedrooms according to the 1954 builder. I say it has 1 bedroom now that everyone but me is out of the house. I have a bedroom with bookcases. I have a room with sewing machines, sergers, ironing board, furniture with drawers - you know the rest. The 3rd room has the computer, fold-away cutting table, couch, rolling carts for anything (toys) that needs to be rolled to the computer, paper and other craft supplies. I tell people I have a 1 bedroom house with "Creativity Zones". People who don't sew, do crafts, or have hobbies ask me how my "Creativity Zones" are doing. For some reason, those who don't get the concept of sewing, quilting, crafts, or hobbies understand "creativity".

A sewing room is part of the house that has all your stuff in it.
A sewing space is the kitchen table, some place where you need to put away the machine.

A studio is what you call it. If you want a studio instead of a space, just rename it!

Remember when everyone had a living room, then it was a den-then it was a great room and now it's back to a living room again. I have a sanctuary. I go there for my solace, calm and peace. Whatever it's called, I need it and all of my stuff in it. I can find anything, but it would take anyone else a month to find something. Thank heavens for doors that can remain closed when needed. LOL

I call my space "my sanctuary". It is one of the upstairs bedroom. It has a full bath and I use the shower door as a design wall (put flannel on it)> I have a tv, refrigerator, phone, lots of light, a table for cutting and another for the machine I'm using at the time. There is a large spool rack (made by DH) on one wall close to the machine. The walk-in closet contains shelves with fabrics, batting, etc. I have a barrister bookcase for books and lots of storage tubs for whatever. My long arm is downstairs in the foyer until I get things arranged enough for it to fit upstairs. I also have two dog beds for my fur babies.

oh, I'm excited after reading this !! I have a sewing studio !!! I have a dedicated spare bedroom for my sewing machines which are kept up 24/7. On one of the walls is my design wall which usually has at least 1 project on it.

In the other spare room I call my cutting room (that's how DH knows which room I'm in when he hollers for me). In that room is my shelving with my fabric on it, cutting table and ironing board that's kept up all the time. The only time those are taken down and moved out is when my son comes home for a visit. He doesn't mind sharing space with my fabric LOL

I too have a quilting/sewing studio. Which was my former dining room. I have two sewing machines set up in there along with my 6 needle embroidery machine, and shelves with fabric that used to hold knick knacks. Also a wall that has the thread racks with all kinds of thread. Just a step away is my two car garage that I have also converted into my quilting/sewing studio. My cutting table is set up out there, with another table & a sewing machine, with shelves and plastic bins of all kinds of fabric and supplies. On the other wall I have those white cabinets you can buy at Target and they are full of "stuff" too, with a wall that holds my rulers and rotary cutters. I also teach classes to ladies at my church that want to learn how to quilt. That's why so many tables with machines. I still work a full time job, but getting closer to retirement so I can do this full time :).

I tend to think those who have studios as being the creative, focused, I quilt or I die sort like Van Gogh was to his painting. The size doesn't matter only the intense desire to create. It is a place that is to be respected and allows the quilt artist to pursue the art.

The rest of us have sewing rooms.

I have my "work room" or "sewing room" or "katey;s room"...lol....Katey moved out of her room 3 yrs ago when her older brother moved out of the basement rooms. THe basement rooms started 20 years ago with a wall to stop the kids from playing with my sewing machine.....the room turned into a bedroom with an attached 3 pc bath and a "family room". Well the kids are slowly leaving, which left me with the 8x8 spare bedroom...BUT....I leave my kenmore ready to speed through a quilt top, 2 ironing boards, a closet with LOTS of fabric, book shelves with my little TV and books and mags and piles of fabric for my next quilt. My cutting mat is on the floor with a shoebox filled with rulers and slicers, as I usually sit on the floor to cut my fabric. My extra dining room chair sits at my sewing table...and 3 dogs (lab, pitbull and wheaton terrier) sit at the door wondering when "mom" is coming out....lol. The visiting springer (Piper) likes to lay under my table....critters are so funny!

Am trying to figure out if I want to leave my little work room for the big basement rooms when Katey leaves the nest next month....no probably not....I think I like my little work room

Mine is called a sewing room. It is about a 5x7 room, very tiny, but there is enough space for my sewing machine on a small cabinet, serger that sits on a kids computer desk and 2 other small tables that house some drawers and sterilite containers for storage. My husband built shelves in the closet that hold lots of storage containers for organization. One wall holds a small design wall, big enough for a throw or crib quilt, maybe twin quilt, haven't gotten that big yet, and the other has lots of those temporary wall hangers that I use to hang various rulers/squares, etc. On the 3rd wall is a pinboard that I use to tack up pattern pieces etc. It all sounds organized, but never feels that way.

I went from having a sewing machine in the bedroom when the kids were little to having a small sewing room when my son moved out after college, and then a little larger sewing room when my daughter went to college. About 3 years ago we built a 12' X 23 1/2' "sewing studio" onto the back of the house. I guess it qualifies as a studio because it has room to keep several of my machines set up; 2 sewing machines and an embroidery machine and a Sashiko machine as well as a big board ironing station, lots of storage cabinets and shelves, cutting table and design wall.

It has windows all around so there is plenty of natural light. It only took me 45 years to get my dream studio. I love it.

I have two rooms: The Cutting Room, aka Guest Room; and The Horror Room, where sewing and ironing happens. The Design Wall was born just last month, and still resides in a hallway, the only place with an empty wall. I'm working on getting rid of the accumulated storage and clutter and converting Horror Room to The Studio, but time and energy so rarely coincide it's a very slow process!

I have a dedicated small room that I call my sewing room - but it could be studio - its a room right off my bedroom - I called it a sunroom - I have my Viking, a large cutting table , stacks of fabric and small ironing area - my longarm does not fit in that room so its in my bedroom. Eventually we are going to knock out a wall and increase my "sewing room" into a "sewing studio" so I can put my long arm and my treadle in there too. The beauty of my room is large windows so I can see my beautiful front yard and its a long way from my telephone - every messge on my answering machine says " I know you are in your sewing room and can't hear the phone...." BTW, my husband and I are both Ham Radio operators - we have always had a radio room (or shack) - that is another whole fun hobby too. What a great thread.

In our old house, I had a sewing room...a bedroom. When Hubby and I built a new house, the architect drew out the plans and had the room over the 4 car garage listed as " sewing/craft studio" adding extra outlets and rough in for extra lighting ( which 10 years later is now being utilized since my "needs" have changed).
For the first 9 years of it's life, the studio was not used to it's full potential. I just "retired" (fewer days and hours) and now have decided to re-design the area. I have been trolling the Internet for ideas...look out home depot and lowes (and other fun shopping spots) ....a crazed quilting/sewing demon is on the loose.

My husband is an amateur radio operator also. I am impressed that you can share a room for quilting and radioing. I know if we shared, I would get tired of the "radio noise, Morse Code, etc." and he would get tired of threads being everywhere!!

My studio used to be the family room. I leave my machine out all the time.

I call my space my Quilt Studio. I have 2 machines set up and do not take them down. All my cotton fabric is in the studio. As well as in the walkin closet! I have a cutting table, my large laptop, my TV and DVD player. I have all the tools I need and 2 file cabinets for supplies. I am also storing my scraps in this room. I enjoy being in there and creating. I do slip and call it a sewing room, but for me it is my space to create. I love having my own space. I did do crafts many years ago. My area was 6 feet along a wall in the living room. I was with my kids and they loved having me close by. When they left for college or moved out I took one of the bedrooms. That is my studio now. It will be one until I move out! Sometimes you have to speak up and take what you need. Where ever you create is your studio. Make it yours! Be happy creating! Luann
