I have noticed that when I am ready to cut up the last of a fabric I really like, I am reluctant to do it. It's like when I cut it, I've lost a special fabric even tho I know I am going to use it in something else I will like.
Does anyone else get so attached to a special fabric that you don't want to cut it up and use it? Or am I just the silly one? Dene |
Maybe you could start a literal scrap book of sorts, something to keep those last little bits that you can't say bye too?
(Now that may sound silly to some but I never claimed to be "normal". LOL) I do have a little ziploc with a few fabrics that I wish I could find to get more of. None of them have any selvage info, some were given to me, one piece came from a scrap bin somewhere. I take them with me to shows, when I travel to other QS and ask around. They are older so I'm sure discontinued. |
Your not the only one! I'm always afraid I can't find it again. I solved that by buying extra. That has helped.
|
Maybe you could make a scrappy quilt from small blocks of all of your fabrics so you can have a big quilt for memories of your fabrics.

I definitely have that problem but I think it is more severe! I just hate cutting into any fabric I love. I guess that is why I have way too much fabric!
|
I remember when my son wanted to quilt. I told him to go up and choose however many fabrics he needed to make what he wanted. Two of the choices were my 'special' fabric that I was savig for when THE project presented itself. I almost asked him to choose something else but did not want to discourage him - I mean, I DID buy them to use, didn't I? He did a very good job on the table runners he did.
|
Nope! Just the opposite, in fact. For fabrics I really like, it makes me happy when I find the perfect quilt projects for them. (I buy fabric I like, add it to my stash, and wait for inspiration!)
|
I have one of my totes full of fabric I love and can't bear to cute. I just visit it now and then. :-D

LOL!! You have it bad!
|
I have a few pieces of fabric, not suitable for quilting, that were in my mother's things...I haven't cut them yet because they're clothing fabrics and I want to make sure that they'll be something I can wear! I'm not quite done losing weight yet..

I have that problem to the point I may not start the quilt becuase I like the fabric so much I don't want to cut it. I my sister laughs at me but I'm serious it can be a problem.
|
I thought I was the strange one!
Last week I gave away a piece of fabric, quite unremarkable in any way other than the fact it was orange flowers and had come from my Mom's stash when she passed away. At the time it was just a normal thing to do! I gave it to a good friend to make a table runner for her M-I-L and I know it was appreciated by her and will be by the m-i-l too, BUT it has niggled at me ever since... not fretting but just a few random thoughts about Mom and the fabric. I hope she likes it! |
I too have that problem. I have some fabric I haven't cut yet because I want just the right pattern that will let the beauty of the colors and the pattern show.
|
Glad to know I'm not the only one... Yesterday I was working on a scrappy quilt and needed more fabric in the "blues" family. I found a piece slightly smaller than a FQ but it was all I had left of one I really, really liked. I almost couldn't cut strips 'cause then it would be gone.
|
I have several 14" Japanese fabrics that I cannot bear to cut.
I pin them up on my wall or design wall, alternating from time to time, thus getting to enjoy looking at them without having to sew into a quilt. |

And that is how "stashes" begin.... no one wants to cut up the pretty fabrics, we'd rather just go buy some more!! LOL

All the time!

Denek, how old is your Bichon, name, sex.... and all the happy stuff. I meant sex as in male or female... not in the biblical sense...
I have two, Junie (my rescue she's 8 and I have had her 4 years, rescued from a puppy mill) and then I have the Beast or better known as Tatter Tot. He's four, low to ground, and he can carry on a conversation with you exactly as if you were talking to a neighbor. I guess he gets it from me... poor baby. Not really spoiled in the weirdest sense. And Junie is just as shy and delicate as if she was a prima donna. She is an excellent and dear little girl. Whoops, better get back to your question. So busy with your fluff I forgot where I was. Nothing new here on that,, |

Also have to say that one of yours looks so much like my friends "special" Bichon Cinnamon who we lost to pancreatitis almost 7 years ago. She would give anything for another Cinny. She comments every time she notices your avatar photo. Love to talk about the furkids... If you want to continue the discussion, we can take it to the chat section. |
I always put some in my quilt diary to show the fabrics I used. I can go back to that if I want to fawn over the fabric! lol
~Bj~ |
Yes, I have fabric I haven't been able to sew. Pieces I got to make something specific for someone and didn't get it done before they left this world. I fondle it and put it back on the shelf. I can't let it go.
I gave it some more thought: We all need quilters anonymous! |
Silly? If so I'm beyond silly. I can hardly stand to cut the slightest sliver from any of the fabric in my stash. Obviously I just like to collect and organize it. lol
|
And to think I thought I was the only one!!
You have all made me feel so much better about the piece of tartan I bought from a quiltmaker in Scotland in 1971 and haven't ever had the courage to cut. Trouble is, it's a tad out of fashion now, so I guess I'll just have to keep it a little longer. Glad to hear I'm not alone. |
When that fabric goes into a scrappy quilt you will remember what you made with it. But I get really attached to favorites and love using a scrap some place else. Then there are fabrics I am glad to see finally used up and gone!
|
I use the scraps and make cathedral window blocks by hand as a history of all the beautiful fabircs I have used in quilts and hate to part with. I have to admit I do just get my stash out and stare and plan and then put away as well.
|
no you are not silly i feel the same way sometimes !!! it kinda like losing a friend when you do that , but then i tell myself , hey i can see it in the quilt when i am done!!!
|
I can totally relate. I had a very good friend give me some absolutely georgous fabric that was very expensive. I'm waiting for just the right project to put it in. I've pulled it out many times to look at and feel and I just can't make myself cut into it. One day just the right project will come along that just calls out for it and I will cut it in a heartbeat. I have other fabrics like that too, but not to the same intensity.
|
Denek - sounds completely normal to me. I often "feel the loss", even though logically I will be seeing the fabric more often in the finished project.
|
I have been given fabric that is so beautiful that I don't want to cut it, and I have been giving scraps that I put these tiny pieces aside for something spiecal, and these are just tiny pieces. silly I know but it is so pretty. God bless. Penny

make little labels for the bags or scrapbook that has the year and all the manufacturing info you have

I have fabric I love so much, can't cut it. Making a scappy with my favorites sounds like a good solution.
|
LOL, I have some fabric dating back 30-35 years that I haven't been able to bring myself to cut. You are not alone!
|
I also have the issue. I don't like to cut any fabric I really like either, I have seperation issues with them. I guess that is why I also have lots of uncut fabric.....another hurdle to jump when I do get time to start sewing again.
|
I'm glad to know that I'm the only one who loves certain fabrics so much that she can't bear to cut them. I may be fabric crazy, but I'm happy to know I'm not the only one with the disease. This one disease of which I don't want to be cured.
