Simply woven quilt issues
https://www.jellyrollfabric.net/Simp...e_ep_89-1.html
I have tried all day to complete one, just one, block, to no avail. I'm not a beginner quilter but can't get the twist and cuts right. Has anyone made this pattern. I tried 6, yes 6 times to try and get at least one block finished. Looking for tips to make this. Thought it would be a great way to use up left over jelly rolls. Does anyone have an easier pattern I could try? |
Have you seen this tutorial? I have the patten in my “ to do list”, its been there forever, but I would only do it when I am in a total Zen frame of mind.

Yes I have the tutorial but get confused with the turning and cutting.

I love that quilt and want to make it! I couldn't find a way to print the pattern, and it's one that I would want to have beside me (not on the computer screen) while making the blocks. I can see how it could be confusing. I did copy it into a Word file and can print from there, but there should be a way to print or download directly from the tutorial. Did anyone find a way to do this?

On my iPad I am able to print it out, its 16 pages long though! |
Yes, I have made it, it's absolutely my favorite jelly roll pattern to make. It is worth printing out the entire directions. There are many photos but worth it. The biggest key for me is to always turn in the same direction. Another helpful hint is I make all the strips the largest length and trim after each addition. It is not a block that I chain piece. Work on one block at a time, if you make a mistake, toss the block, there is no going back on this pattern.
|
I struggled a bit with my first blocks. I agree that remembering to always turn in the same direction helps quite a bit, as does reviewing the step by step directions each time you return to the project. One last word of caution…..watch your ruler lines, perhaps mark with tape. I made 49 blocks only to discover that 11 were incorrect. I was very lucky to have enough fabric to make replacement blocks. In the end I loved the result and gifted it to my sister who was thrilled.
Once you get into the groove you will be fine but I wouldn’t drag this project out to long…..you want to keep the process fresh in your brain! |
I meant to also note that I did chain piece and the repetition helped me. Worked in sets of 7 blocks at a time, completing each step on all seven blocks and then moving to the next step on all seven blocks etc. that was about all I wanted to do in one session.
|
I always wondered how that went together. From what I see, as Toverly said, the trick is to always turn the block in the same direction. I may have to try this one

After supper I marked up the pattern...indicated where the first strip insert is. Also marked on each pic of the pattern where the first strip is. Was SO SO careful on the rotation and DRUM ROLL PLEASE...I finished a block and is correct. I'm exhausted. Time for bed...lol. Hate to think how many more blocks I need.:(
OH and I did copy the pattern and made it a word doc, made the pics smaller so it's only 3 pages. |
Thanks for the link. I like a challenge!
|
The blocks do get easier after you've done a few, so hang in there. I agree: pattern at hand helps!

anyone make this out of left over 2.5 inch strips or scraps? Seems like that would work also without having to get a jelly roll?
|
I have made it that way sewingpup. The way the strips get broken up, change in fabric patterns and extra seams didn't bother me. I would show it but I have given the quilt away. I did it the same. I made strips the longest length and seams falling where they may.
|
I'm using left over jelly rolls. All sorts of colors and prints. Also cut apart "interesting" fat quarters that otherwise may not make it onto a quilt. Love the way the first block turned out. Slow and steady wins the rrace.

I’ve seen this pattern and downloaded it, but haven’t attempted it yet!
|
This is what I'm doing to keep myself organized with this pattern.

Here it is in pdf form. https://whatsnanamaking.com/wp-conte...oven-quilt.pdf

So I finished the top yesterday and now working on the back. Have several blocks that I cut/sewed wrong. Labeled them as "oops", sashing them and creating a scrappy back. Have to admit its a cool back...lol.

Did you hear the big Homer Simpson DUH? I viewed the pattern/tutorial yesterday and like others my head was spinning. So glad I revisited the tutorial and took your advise to make a paper copy. I saved the tutorial in WORD and played around reducing the size of the photos. Now I can comfortably add it to my to do list.
Just wondering if anyone has made this pattern with just one jelly roll? Thinking of a baby or toddler sized finish. I have jelly rolls on hand but not two that would play nicely together. |
WMUTeach, I have made it starting out with one jelly roll. I use the jelly roll for colors. So often there are neutral fabrics that would fade away so they can't be used. I use solids in the similar colors from my stash. That's my out. If I mix in as I go, I won't run out of fabrics. Doesn't really answer your question, but it does work.

So I'm DONE piecing and glue basting this quilt. I created several OOPS blocks and instead of ripping to tossing saved them for the back. Had enough OOPS to make a back. So confession time. I had problems with the top and piecing the back. I usually don't name my quilts but this one is called NAUGHTY CHILD and needs to be in time out!!!
|
Congrats on your finish! This pattern does get easier every time. OOPS blocks always happen.

Do you have any scraps that would play nice with the colors you have? When I have run short with the jelly roll on projects, I just cut some 2.5 inch strips of something that goes. I have even replaced some of the jelly roll strips with mine own if I did not care for them.

I am laughing! I made this quilt pattern - once - and had an awful time getting the blocks correctly oriented. I am a visual learner, and had to study the pictures every time, plus I am thinking (remembering) that one photo may not have been oriented correctly itself.
