The class will be good for you. My dealer charges $110 to maintain my Featherweight. They have a tendency to freeze up. Will you ask the teacher "Why" they do that if you take the class? My featherweight sewed wonderfully and then for no 'visual' reason, froze. I can't afford to take it in to the repair shop, everytime this happens. (I would take a class if my dealer offered it).Thanks. Eiltcoq.

I have several featherweights and have taken the class. Since featherweights are not computerized there is little that can go wrong with them but what you learn at the class will keep them running forever. I really enjoyed the class and have been able to service my own sewing machines or should say the featherweights.

How often should they be oiled? Any particular type of oil? Where do you oil them?
How do you clean them? Where do you clean? Bobbin area, and..?? |

I have signed up at my LQS for "The Cleaning and Care of Your Singer Featherweight Class." It is a 4 hour class that is hands on. The FW will be disassembled, cleaned, oiled lubricated. Emphasis will be on the bobbin area showing where threads collect and the importance of cleaning the needle plate area on a regular basis. They will also teach how to give my FW a protective finish and clean up a case that has an odor. It is $55. What do you think? I bought it about 6 weeks ago and have not had it "tuned up."

Singer 221's are quality, easily maintained machines. get out
the book that came with your machine. It is full of all the things you need to know. oil the bobbin area the most frequently. depends on much you sew. before a class,a couple of times at a retreat. lube twice a year. oil everywhere that metal runs against metal--the book shows it all. clean under the needle area. remember to check the "finger" position when you put plate back on !many a $$ has been made by repair people for this simple thing. they should just fix it & say "happy sewing" no charge ! we repair & sell 221's, if you have any questions PM I would be glad to answer. --owner of a 1934 & tan 221,201,301,15-91-- Love those Black Beauties.
