I was wondering if anyone has the Singer Quantum? If so, do you like it or don't you like it, why....? Enquiry mind wants to know.

I just ordered it from HSN yesterday because it was on sale. Apparently it is a conglomeration between the Janome 6600 and the Babylock Quest Plus. The reviews are split. People seem to love it or hate it but nobody feels ho-humm about it.

I figured that I would give it a run through all the features and see if we are more compatible than me and Pfaffy. If it doesn't meet my expectations, I can return it.

Now I have to be patient - - - tapping finger on table top already. Those will be long 10 days. lol

sewcrazygirl 04-22-2010 04:00 PM

umm. i ordered it months ago when it was a todays special value. I got it home, plugged it in and sent in back in 2 days. I didnt like the way it sewed, was really loud and not a smooth machine.

You may love it, who knows.

sewcrafty 04-22-2010 04:00 PM

Googled the machine and it came up on HSN. They're having an event price. Has reviews and such on it.

Thanks for the reply. I suppose I have to test it out myself to see if we get along. It appears that some people got lemons.

I figured with the return policy I couldn't go wrong. AND if I don't like it, I get to figure out which features I absolutely need. IF I need to get a different machine, it will help me decide on a Janome versus a Babylock because neither of the machines I looked at have ALL the features I think I want.

It's made for HSN and I thought the sale price was definitely in the ballpark of what I was looking for.

sewcrafty 04-22-2010 04:22 PM

For the $200 difference I'd get the Janome 6600. I know I've praised this machine since I got it, but it deserves it. Its made with ball bearings which are not going to wear out like the bush and castings. Took hubby to ask questions on mechanical stuff and this is the machine that he liked. I paid $1049 for my 6600. Think about it.

Since I already ordered it, I have to give it a chance. Honestly, if it turns out to be dud, I'll send it back. There are some things I am not crazy about on the 6600. If anything, I'd check out the new one (the 7700). Believe it or not, but I prefer the front load bobbins and the built-in walking foot.

sewcrazygirl 04-22-2010 08:15 PM

why not check out Viking? the Sapphire 870 is pretty awesome for quilters, the 835 is more affordable. I didnt like the 6600 either, and the janome 7700 looks too meaty for me, i looked at viking and glad I did.

drivingsusan 04-22-2010 08:16 PM

I have been very pleased with my Quantum L500!
I LOVE the built-in walking foot. Have yet to install the foot pedal....just push the 'go' button and off it goes...at any consistant speed!! Needle up/down is great!
It will get loud IF the bobbin is not in 'right'...or... if there is a build up of 'fuzz' in the (where the top thread runs from the spool to the needle)...old age is making the correct word escape me!
I sew much better with this machine than I ever have---straight lines, even 1/4 in.....
And the distance from the needle to throat is awesome! Lots of room!
I really love it and I got it when it first came out!
If you have any ?????? you may just ask me or Singer has a dedicated # just for HSN customers!!!

sharon b 04-22-2010 10:18 PM

Is it there yet  LOL Hope you have fun with it

Janome has a built in walking foot. Lever is in back and you just snap on the foot. I didn't think I would like the top bobbin, but I actually do. I can see my bobbin thread dwindling down and have only run out of thread once.

littlehud 04-23-2010 07:24 AM

I'm excited for you and can't wait to see what you think of it. Hope yours is a dream machine. Keep us posted.

greencat 04-23-2010 09:58 AM

I also got this one the first time it was on HSN. I needed a new 2nd machine. I thought the thread cutter was a little loud until I watched Sewing with Nancy and heard her machine in the background (also Fons&Porter). I haven't had any trouble with mine, sews just fine. I still have to try FMQ with it. The bobbin holder is just like my old White machine.
Only thing I don't like is the bobbin low function. It pretty much stops sewing at that point, which is disappointing if I only have a short way to go to finish a seam. I just take the bobbin out and use the rest for hand sewing binding.
As with any machine it has to be threaded properly per the directions for the smoothest ride.

The Pfaff, Babylock, and Singer have the kind of walking foot where you engage the mechanism by pushing the lever under the foot. No tools required.

Isn't it funny how we are all different in what floats our boats? lol

Thanks for that thumbs up reply. I have had the walking foot on my Pfaffs for years and love it too. I have also broken a few needles until I got the bobbin shuttle seated correctly. My current Pfaff has been forcing me to do more cleaning because of lint build-up in the feed dogs.

I donwloaded the manual last night to get a head start and now I am even more impatient.

I did - the answer: no built-in walking foot and that is a deal breaker for me.

I laughed out loud because that is one of the reasons I am replacing my Pfaff. Well, if it just stops and you HAVE to change the bobbin then that's that. Heavy sigh.....but still excited. Glad you love your machine.

MadQuilter 04-23-2010 11:59 AM

Sharon and littlehud: I have to wait at least 9 more days unless I can hypnotize the UPS guy to run like the wind. lol

akrogirl 04-23-2010 01:14 PM

I also bought the L-500 when it was the Today's Special and I really like mine. Yes, it does have a problem with the thread cutter that I should probably get fixed, but that isn't a big issue for me. My machine is actually pretty quiet and sews nicely. I have some other TOL machines and I feel that this machine holds its own quite well and is good value for the money.

There is definitely a learning curve, however, as the threading, bobbin etc. operate quite a bit differently from most of my previous machines.

When the low bobbin warning shuts you down...just wait a few seconds...you will be able to sew again...and again!!! It always seems to happen on the last 3 inches!! But the warning always sounds at least 5 inches ahead of time!!

MadQuilter 04-23-2010 06:19 PM

Good thing I already downloaded the manual and started reading, akrogirl.

I read that the sound can be deactivated on this machine. Hm, might not be a good idea or I'll get whiplash when the bobbin stops. lol

Got notified today that it is in the good hands of UPS. I will probably be on that tracking number like the kids who watch the Santa GPS at Christms.

How about now?

MadQuilter 04-23-2010 08:51 PM

waaaaaaaahhhaaaaa 7-10 days.

Marnie 04-24-2010 06:36 AM

MadQuilter: would you mind sharing what things you're " not crazy about" on the Janome 6600 ?

greencat 04-24-2010 06:48 AM

Thanks drivingsusan - I know I need to put some more time into learning all about this machine. I have been able to kind of walk it along 2-3 stitches at a time (seems like forever to go the last few inches!!). Otherwise I'm really pleased with this machine!

the stupid thing refuses to do windows! or bring me breakfast in bed. or warn me when i've chosen fabrics that won't look good together once assembled. :-(

other than that ... i love mine. :-)

It has a drop-in bobbin and the walking foot requires a shank modification (not sure if that is the correct terminology). It also doesn't have a free arm. There were a few other minor things that I can't remember exactly.

When I started looking at the different machines, the 6600 didn't get me that excited. The Babylock got me more excited. The Singer got me downrigh giddy because it marries the awesome features I like from both Babylock AND Janome.

Please don't get me wrong: I think the Janome is a fabulous machine (bummer about it not doing windows Patrice - lol)

IF it turns out that the Singer is NOT what I expect, I will have a chance to review the individual features and decide on Janome OR Babylock. Of course, the price had a big impact ($899 + tax)

We'll see.

MadQuilter 04-28-2010 12:56 PM

Well - she's heeeeeeere! UPS man dropped her off. DH was working on the house when he drove up and of course Pat was wearing his ripped shirt. UPS guy looked at Pat - looked at the machine - and then he asked me if I was planning to make this guy some new shirts? I might quilt him a vest - lol.

Candace 04-28-2010 01:18 PM

Whoopee! Get going and start loving your new baby!

sharon b 04-28-2010 08:10 PM

WOO HOO... so what have you made ? Besides a repair on Pats shirt

MadQuilter 04-28-2010 08:39 PM

J made a straight stitch. The third one didn't even have a rat's nest (I had to rethread the machine a few times to get the hang of "proper needle position"). Now I am pushing all the buttons - there sure is a lot of beeping and non-action going on. lol

Tomorrow I need to take new pics. The flash won't go off and the pics on my PDA are a bit dark.

Pat's a country boy - he better be used to ripped shirts. teehehe

sharon b 04-28-2010 08:51 PM

Sounds like fun ... soon you will be whipping out all kinds of neat things

Candace 04-29-2010 06:57 AM

I'm waiting for those pictures. <fingers tapping on desk>

BellaBoo 04-29-2010 08:38 AM

I ordered a Singer Quantum years ago from HSN. It has never given me any problems. It was one of the first Quantums made. The stitches are perfect. I use this machine for all my machine applique, it sews perfect satin stitches. I can use any type of thread with no trouble. I don't know how the new Quantums are but mine is worth every penny I paid for it.

If the foot pedal is the air tube, buy clear tubing from a hardware store and slit it open lengthwise to slip over the foot control tube. I dropped a rotary cutter and it cut the tube. I had to buy a new foot control.

Thanks BellaBoo for the additional positive review. Since I have no idea what you mean by "air tube" I don't think I have that. I really like the foot pedal - it is metally, industrial looking and very smooth.

OK - lesson #2: When changing the foot, make sure the stitch you select actually works with that foot OOOOOOR you break the needle - lol

I played all evening and had a good time. She is a little louder than my other machines and some of that may be new machine syndrome. With a few hours under her belt, she may run smoother.

She sure has a nice selection of feet and the 1/4" foot is scant. (tried that last night). So far, there is more to like than dislike. I told Pat that I need to do a "real" project - not just sew like mad on scraps. He said he dreamt that I sewed slip covers for EVERYTHING in the house - even the bed. It had pockets for the pillows. ROFL.

Here's a pic:

sewcrazygirl 04-29-2010 11:34 AM

im glad you like your machine, It was too loud for me, I like to sew when my family sleeps sometimes.

sharon b 04-29-2010 11:39 AM

So what is todays project ???? Glad you are having fun learning all the neat new stuff

Tell Pat his chairs slip cover will have two pockets for all his manly things LOL (ie, remote controls ! LOL)

Candace 04-30-2010 07:18 AM

So....still loving it today? Be careful with that wrong foot for the stitch thing. I've had needles break off and fly towards my eyes doing that:<

How's the quilted shirt for hubby coming;>

BellaBoo 04-30-2010 08:00 AM

I guess some of the first computer machines has air to operate the foot control. I have no idea how that works or where the air comes from but it does. The cord from the foot control to the machine is a black tube. No electric connection at all. I thought about this foot petal way too much to be normal and still haven't figured out how this works.
