which size rotary cutter
Ive always used a 45mm rotary cutter but today at the store I saw the 60mm. What is the difference between the two? Is one better than the other or do they have different uses?
Don't know, I use the 45mm.
I use the 60 a lot as I can cut more layers accurately with it.
I have about 10 different cutters of all sizes from years of teaching and owning a shop.
I rarely use any but the 45mm one personally. Jan in VA |
The 60 is good for cutting through several layers of fleece. When you add the thickness of the ruler to the thickness of 2 or more pieces of fleece, it is difficult to cut through with the 45.
I use the 60 mm and the 45 as my go to cutters. I think its easier when cutting multiple layers to use the 60mm.
Use 45mm never used a 60. Look huge
I like my 45 the best.
Only used the 45mm
I use 28mm for cutting twisters using template as you can cut tight to the template with this. I use the 45mm for cutting blocks and for cutting strips I use my 60mm as it cuts up to 8 layers accurately its also better for cutting thicker fabric like denim. I use true cut rotary cutters as I like the handle and I have their big ruler 24 1/2in long. use what suits you best we are all different with different sizes hands and strengths.
Most of the time I use the 45mm. It works well with the June Tailor Shape Cut ruler. I also have a 60mm I use sometimes when cutting, but always when trimming my quilts after they are quilted. I have the 28mm, but hardly ever use that one.
I find the 45 mm to be the most comfortable for me to handle. I rarely cut more than 2 layers of fabric and don't normally use thick things like fleece. I also had a 28 mm but found that uncomfortable as well. Don't know that I've used a 60 but it looks huge to me! I would guess the size of one's hands would be a factor as well.
it works great on fleece and flannel... and of your cutting more than a few layers at a time... I have the 28mm/ 45mm/ and 60mm.. all have their own purposes..
I have both, but use mainly the 60!
I like the 60 but seldom use it as it is for larger stacked pieces, I think
I have 3 sizes. I sold my 60mm because those blades are much bigger, the easier for you to get cut !! I don't have the physical strength I once had so I don't cut anything more that two layers at a time. I use my 45mm for most of my cutting and occasionally I use my 28mm. I even have the really small 18mm that I used when I cut hexagons for a Grandmother's flower garden. You have to always keep safety in your mine and use what you feel comfortable with. NO ONE wants to make a trip to the ER. I consider myself lucky that quilting for over 20 years, I have never cut myself with a rotary cutter.
I have 18m, 28mm, 45mm and 60mm. I mostly use the 45mm, followed by the 18mm, which I use for appliqué shapes. I sometimes use the 60mm when cutting through Insul-Bright or that tougher needle punched poly when making bags. I can't remember the last time I used the 28mm.
I use my 60mm the most but I don't often cut more than 2 layers. I use the bigger cutter because it has a bigger circumference.... therefore a longer cutting edge. I find it doesn't wear out as quickly as my 45 so I don't have to replace it as often. ... I know.... I'm a geek..... but a practical geek.

I use my 45mm Olfa most of the time~
I use my 45mm all the time. Once I needed to cut many layers and used the 45mm with a new blade with no trouble at all. I do have a 28mm and will use it soon in a DWR class I signed up for. I've never used it, but knew I would someday need that size. The 60mm seems so big. I can't think of a single time I wished I had a bigger cutter.

I have all the sizes and use the 45 for cutting out all my pieces and use the 28 when I trim each finished block to size. Have a 60 but rarely use it.
I use either the 45 mm or 60 mm - whichever I find first- or has a sharp blade. I usually only cut one or two layers at a time. So if I make a mistake, it is only one or two layers that have been messed up.
I have 3sizes and use the 60 mm when using the shape cutter. Having a larger blade, it works in the slots best. I can cut 6 layers with it.
I have 18, 28, and 45 mm cutters. I almost always use my 45 mm one. I read somewhere that the 28mm one works best in the shape cutter so I started using that one for the cutter and actually like the cutter now! Although I see that some prefer the 45 or the 60 for the shape cutter.
I have used the 60 at a volunteer event and it worked fine. So it's just a matter of personal preference. I don't usually cut more than 2 layers at a time. Connie |
I use the 60mm almost exclusively lately. I'm not sure if it's the titanium blade or what, but it seems to cut the nicest for most things I cut. It's wonderful for the bulk of a quilt needing to be trimmed, but I use it for 2 layers of quilt cotton too.

I have to say, I WOULD use the 60 the most, ( it just seems through fabric easier) but because the blades are MUCH more expensive and Harbor Freight doesn't have inexpensive replacement blades, I use the 45 the most.
I have a 60 mm as well as a couple of 45mm and a very small ones to use with curved rulers. I mainly use the 60mm.
Don't really have a preference it just seems to be close at hands all the time. |
It's personal preference and if you have both or several different sizes, it will probably boil down to which one you can find when you are ready to cut. froggyintexas

I use a 45 and own a 28 I seldom have a need for. I have found that for me, the blade size matters less than the type of handle. I bought an ergonomic handle for my 45 mm and I have never looked back. It eliminated the pains I got from the straight handle and I love how the blade cover automatically closes when you release pressure on the handle. If you have never used one, check it out.
I'm lazy and like to cut LOTS of layers at a time, so I use my 60mm the most. It did seem big at first but now that I'm used to it the 45mm seems really small!
I use the 45 mostly. I like the 60 for when I'm cutting off the batting/ heavy layers as it makes for easier movement....
I love my 60mm rotary cutter since I bought it a number of years ago. I've just used it but recently bought the Wave I think it's called. it's the one that's easy to change the blade. I've been using it lately and I like it but still wouldn't trade my 60mm. Wondering if they might come out with a 60mm that is easy to change the blade? hummmmm
I have the 28mm, the 45mm, and the 60mm. I like the 45 best...

I have both but only use the 45 cuz I found the 65 one wobbles too much and I don't get a good cut. just my observation

I tend to use the 45 mm. rotary cutter the most, but I use the 60 mm when I am cutting thicker fabric or more layers as it does a better job, but it all depends on your preference and what is comfortable to you..
I have a 45 MM which is mostly what I use. I would like a 28 MM which I think would be better for curves. I have a smaller one, I think is 18MM that I almost never use. I bought it to use on curves but the blade is so small it won't clear the ruler, so not much good.
I use mainly the 45mm. I have used the 60 if I need to cut a lot of layers and I have used the 28 for very small cuts.
A lady in my church had a 60. She found it very difficult to find blades.
