Slab

Can anyone tell me what "slab" refers to in quilting? I saw an article that referred to "Slab Quilts". Is it a size of fabric cut like a fat quarter? Excuse my ignorance!

mighty 07-11-2013 06:50 AM

I'll be watching this one, I have no idea!

Gramie bj 07-11-2013 06:58 AM

Kitsie 07-11-2013 06:58 AM

Google "slab quilts". Lots of info!

mighty 07-11-2013 07:02 AM

Awesome info thank you!

DebraK 07-11-2013 07:25 AM

Interesting- had never heard that term before! Learned something new today.

tessagin 07-11-2013 07:42 AM

Looks like a 15.5" square made out of rectangles. Love the one shown at the site. Different material, same hues of color.

What she said.

Is a slab a big crumb block? This is what it looks like to me

slicksister 07-11-2013 08:01 PM

Just a bunch of pieces of fabric sewn together to make another larger piece of fabric. Usually done in the one color.

DOTTYMO 07-11-2013 10:01 PM

I'm going to stick to a slab of clay or concrete slab, these fabric slabs are far to random for me.

Don't feel bad. I've been quilting, teaching, shop owning, designing patterns for over 30 years and I didn't have a clue what "slab" referred to either!

The only "slab" I know is the one my Texas house was built on. Had to follow Kitsie's google idea and opened a whole new world!!:)

Debra, you're a woman ahead of your time.

Here in Australia, a slab is what we build a house on but it can also be a box of beer.

awww ..i know what you mean!...my dear brother told me that after 50 our heads are so full of knowledge that we have to 'forget' something everytime we learn something new.
now i will google 'slab quilting' i love doing crumb blocks so maybe i just didn't have a name for them.

sparkys_mom 07-13-2013 04:46 AM

I posted this on July 5th

I had never made a slab before but I sent the 4 pictured in my post off to Canada for flood victims. It isn't too late if you would like to do one or two and send yours off. The information is in my post.

You made me laugh, Jan. Yes, my Texas house is built on a "slab" of concrete.....and sometimes these slabs shift and you end up with fine cracks in your walls. That's Texas soil for you.

I had never heard the term "slab" when referring to a quilt, either. We're adding to our descriptive language today.

Quiltlady330 07-13-2013 06:53 AM

New term to me also. Little research on this one. :)

Bibliogirl 07-13-2013 08:32 AM

Thanks to all of you who told us what a "slab" is. Now I know!! New term for me.

Emma S 07-13-2013 08:41 AM

Sparky's Mom missed your thread. This was the first time I heard the term. Considering the hours I spend on quilting sites, kind of amazing.

captlynhall 07-13-2013 08:33 PM

A box of beer? Is that anything like boxed wine?

My time 07-14-2013 04:08 PM

When you google "Slab Quilt", and go to images....they don't make sense. I mean there is no rhyme or reason to them. Never heard of this term in reference to quilting before.

DebraK 07-16-2013 06:48 AM

ha! yes, i know the house reference, but not the beer one. I'll have to use that in conversation soon ;-)

shadoh 07-17-2013 11:08 PM

now that i know what a 'slab' quilt is; how does it differ from a 'crumb' quilt, if i make the crumb blocks all one colour?

Geri B 07-18-2013 06:14 AM

I personally think the term slab quilt(ing) is this person's way of pretending she has something original and can "sell" the idea.........so much of that seems to be happening between tutes and blogs and Pinterest, etc........just re-hash an old idea and give it a new name.

kaelynangelfoot 07-18-2013 11:17 AM

It looks like "slab" quilts are just more organized crumb blocks, everything seems to be in rectangles and monochromatic. I really like the look, personally. I'm always looking for a new creative way to use my scraps.

Exactly what I think also. It is someone's idea of a "new way" of marketing an idea that is really not new...just the term/title is new.
