My best luck is with sandpaper dots that can be purchased at most quilt shops. One in each corner and in the middle, if a square or rectange. zigzagged on a ruler.

You can also spray a shot of 'basting adhesvie' to the back of the ruler. Not too much. Let it dry for a second. It will be tacky but not sticky and it won't harm your fabric.

I have used the sandpaper dots, not a true fan. NOW I use the sticky back foam from the craft section. It came in about 3 x 6 inch piece and I use my cutter to cut about 1/4 to 1/2 inch pieces, peel and stick to my ruler. Works great!

I use nescare surgical tape, you can purchase it at walmart or drug store. I cut a piece to fit the back of ruler making sure when I place it I leave the 1/4" marking so it is visible when I need it. Then when you cut you hold down along the tape and it doesn't move

According to Harriet Hargrave, you place thumb and first two fingers on the ruler and balance the fourth finger and little finger on your fabric. Also she suggests using smaller rather than larger rulers - The two she recommends are 2 1/2 x 12 and a 4 1/2 by 12 - I think I got that right.

And to think I bought that same stuff on a roll in a box. It is especially for this purpose. I found it in the sewing section at JA and paid more lol...but it is clear and you cut it the size of the ruler and just spread it one..it works great...

OK Folks, I tried the Invisigrip some time ago. It still slips. This product is so slick I don't understand how it's supposed to work. It's gotta be me. Iam going to try using the Zotz I use in scrapbooking.

Another tool that REALLY helped me was the June Taylor "Shape Cut Plus" tool. I can do multiple cuts and it has slots every 1/2 inch. I also use the Quilt In A Day strips on my regular rulers plus a Sure Grip Suction handle. I am new also and I didn't realize how time consuming it is to cut correctly. What a difference June Taylor has made for me. :)

Okay go ahead and laugh, however: glue some fine sand paper to the bottom of that ruler. It will not move then. I was doing this 30 years ago and just happened to remember it.
