Gsoh - I'm really surprised that none of you here mentioned the rulers that have a slight lip on the bottom side ---- if you "butt" that edge to the edge of your cutting mat it pretty much automatically gives you a straight angle and then makes it easier to steady your ruler on the way as you cut.

what works for me is to have at least one finger or two fingers off the ruler and on the fabric or cutting table depending how big the fabric is. In other wards you would have at least 2 fingers and the thumb on the ruler, and the pinky and maybe the ring finger off the ruler to steady it. Works for me anyway. Good luck. I have Invisigrip on all my rulers, sandpaper dots, clear dots... they STILL slip!I have a puchased cutting table which may be too high for me to get the right angles on the rulers/ cutters? I am 5'3". That's average, isn't it? Anyway, I've been using them for years & have cut myself many times because I'm holding the ruler too close to the edge to keep it from slipping! BUT, I still prefer them to scissors! lol! Good Luck!

Hello Ida, I have the suction ruler handles or holders but sometimes I still have that trouble. This is what works for me--when I do it: I hold my ruler and cut so far up, like 6-8 inches. I don't go too far past my hand that is holding the ruler. Then I move that hand up the ruler and cut some more. When I move my hand off the ruler I leave the cutter in place and carefully move my other hand up the ruler. I hope this makes sense and helps. Emmy

I use the small sandpaper dots on the bottom of all my rulers and that has worked great for me. They are bigger than a pencil eraser, but not by much.

Dixie Gripper. They are great and gives you the ability to apply pressure. Also the Sandpaper grips work well. Good luck and practice!

I have lost the strength in my hands to hold the ruler the "correct" way anymore. My husband brought home some handled suction cups from the hardware store for me. They are used to move or hold glass panels. Work perfect and are much cheaper than the ones sold in quilt stores.

Well I'm 5' 1-1/2" and I seem to be able to do alright. LOL

I have found a magic tape that is a static cling. You can peel it off and move it elsewhere. I use it on all my rulers, and spools, and on and on. Try it, its great. I am a short person, so leverage was a problem that kept me from cutting well,
