I haven't sewn in 3 weeks! I have 3 projects and 2 swaps I need to take care of. I look at my machine and sewing table and have no interest in doing anything.
I thought getting my FQ and stamp squishy would fire me up, but it did for just a short time. I don't know what is wrong with me :( Does anyone have any suggestions? |
We all are there at some time...I guess I could make a trip to MA and kick your butt if that would help...LOL
|
David you need sunshine!! The nasty weather is a real bummer...try moving the machine to where you can see out a window..hope this helps..if not then... well...I might just have to come over to your house and give you a good swift kick in the @&& *LOL* to get ya movin' Linda B.
|
I'll be watching for suggestions. I've got the slump. The most I get accomplished is reading the QB and wishing, I could do what they are doing.
|
It happens to all of us - I was in a major slump around the New Year - just keep on going - it will come back - I noticed that I get like that when its darker outside - the sunshine really perks me up. Maybe looking at new projects will inspire you - but don't worry - it will come back....
Sorry to tell you but you are normal....:) |
OH you are in BIG trouble now..Lisa & I were posting at the same time and we both have the same idea as to how to get you motivated *L* :-) Linda B.
|
I'm with you. I tried to finish a top yesterday and it's still sitting on my table. I guess I will try again today. I guess we all need a kick in the behind.....to get us going.
|
I find that when I am under stress, it is hard to get going on projects.
Take a break to do something else and come back to it later. Look at some magazines for new inspiration. Get outside and go for a walk. Wash the sheets and pillow cases on your bed for a nice fresh good nights sleep (not indicating that your bed is not clean..LOL) |
David, you aren't alone by any means.
I am heading to my sewing room today to clean up what looks like a bomb hit. I went to Hawaii for my son's wedding and came back to gloom. I know I shouldn't complain but I am anyway :) I've been wanting clean my messy room for over a week and can't get motivated. But here I go............... Take care, friend! Sue |
Cruising the net always reignites the creative fire for me. Just going to google and typing in "handmade quilts" and then clicking "images" opens up a whole new world of ideas. Quilting blogs and websites also add fuel to the fire for me. And don't forget about the old fashioned tried and true paper magazines (gasp!!). So overall, any visuals I can get send my brain on new adventures.

fresh air and seeing the grass turning green and the blue sky and feeling the warm sun shining on my face all gives me a little lift...
and i bring my pretty fabrics outside too because they may just sit beside me or i may actually feel like picking them up... but sounds like you got the "blues"...so maybe blue sky and blue fabric wont help lol |
i'm in the same place David, altho, i know the reason begind mine. ( recent death of father, a cyst removed from right hand, and a broken left arm )*insert pitiful whine here* not to mention a terrible shortage of fabric/supplies.
I think it would cheer me up and get me kick started, if i just came and gathered up ur stamps/ squishies, fabric, macines and just cleaned up all that for u.....yep that would cheer me up!!!! *hmmm need to think on this plan ome more..... cleaning my sewing room is how i broke my left arm ( sewing arm)* .......thinking....... thinking.......yea, getting all that cool new stuff and fabric to my hearts content would be worth a body cast!!!!! |
Sometimes we all need a break. When I get in a slump I try to do just one little quilting related task each day. It might be straightening up my sewing area, cleaning my sewing machine, sewing one or two seams, re-arranging my fabric. Stuff like that. And try not to feel guilty. It'll come back.
|
Sometimes I just need to play in a different medium for a bit. Doing something else can often lead to an idea, color scheme, or just a burst to get over a hump. My alternate project it often knitting or in the stamping/mixed media area. I do so much quilting by hand that a little bit of instant gratification is a breath of fresh air.
|
Maybe getting in and do the swaps...They are kinda hanging over your head. Then promise yourself when they are done you can jump in to a project just for the pure joy of working on it. April Connecting Threads sale paper came today.....I have spent my morning looking at it and seeing what I can't live without!:)
|
Set a timer for 15-20 minutes and just go do something in your sewing room, sew, organize, cut, whatever, when the timer goes off, go do something else and hopefully by the end of the week you'll be back to your creative self.
|
Slump??? maybe it's just a short battery recharging break.
If you don't get to sewing soon, then you'll HAVE TO clean the refrig...yep, under it too, on top of the cabinets, even delve into the old oven with the rubber gloves and stinky spray. Worse come to worse, you'll have to clean each leaf on the silk plants....oh, did I forget to mention all of this stuff will happen at MY house???? Jump back on that horse and get to ridin' high. |
When I get the sewing blahs I make myself sew something. It works for me. The fun comes back very fast when I'm actually sewing something. Once I make myself sit down and start sewing a block I'm cured.
|
I'm with ya on the slump. Just keep cruising this site wishing I could do half of what some of you do. I think I need spring!
|
Yes, I hit my slump about October. I know exactly what caused it. I spent a long weekend finishing up a couple QOV tops, pieced the backs, bound 5 quilts from the LA.
Hubby pops in to see what I'm doing since he hasn't seen much of me over the weekend. I show him what I've accomplished..which I'm quite proud of myself. And he grunts and nods. I'm like hey don't you like them? (silly me, not the question to ask this man-I know this, why do I set myself up? He thinks quilting is not a very efficient use of time.) He says, "It's all production sewing, nothing orginal, nothing that improves yourself" So I told him, "It's quilting, what do you expect? These are very popular patterns." He liked my science quilt but that's about it. I finished a periodic table quilt also, and he almost like it but had to critique it-you should have used grey here and did something chemistry in the backgroud... I'm not a fabric designer! I do what I can with what's available and I know he'd have a fit if I went to spoonflower and designed something and paid $18 a yard for it. "Ok, you can go back upstairs again because I have more production sewing to finish. You just annoyed me. Go! now! up!" And sadly, I haven't really gotten back into the swing. I start to do something then lose interest. So I'll be reading all these posts to get my quilting mo-jo back too. |

Guess I could use a good swift kick. |
My hubby will notice if I haven't done anything for a few days and then remind me how much money I've spent on maxhines and fabric. Lol. He knows I hate wasting things and ut always works. So GIT-R-DUN! Lol
|
It is probably SAD,(seasonal affective disorder) caused by lack of sunshine. It is especially prevalent in Northern climates where sunshine is limited during the winter months. Try to get outside for at least 20 minutes/day. If it persists talk to your physician.
|
When I get in a slump actually getting up and starting to sew something works for me. Someone mentioned this already, but it really does work. Then I wonder why I had hadn't been doing this all along, but I guess we all need breaks even from things we really enjoy.
|
My problem is this stinkin computer lol.
|
Felt the same until a month ago. Always very depressed in the winter. Then went around the garden and noticed that the daffodils finally breaking out . A seed catalogue arrived - sunshine certainly shows up all the dust - suddenly I wanted to get out of bed - sew - see friends - sew some more    Remember, this too shall pass - even when you think that it won't!

See David this is normal most of us have been there ourselves :-P I don’t think there is anything wrong with stepping back from a project if you aren’t fired up. When this happens to me I find that telling myself I’m not going to work on my project (instead tidy up sewing room, housework, spend time doing something different) and that I’m just going to go ‘look’ at my project, admire the blocks, handle them and then I can leave the room. Most times this is just enough to peak my interest again and before I know it I’m sewing away again. I wouldn’t worry about it because this is a passion for you, for all of us – we won’t stop making quilts. Sometimes other things need our attention too and that’s OK :-P
|
Yeah brain block, stress, just being tired of working on the same piece every can get you down. Thats why i try and do on a top and the afternoon i hand quilt. but this works for me.
|
hi david,
I too have been where you are and I also asked for help here on the QB, everyone was so positive and uplifting, I finally four months later am back in my sewing room sewing like I have never before, but it took me awhile to get out of my slump, I was stressed out trying to make everyone around me happy when I myself was not but kept on bearing my smile so no one would know...you do need sunshine and warm weather, I live in mass too and we have had a long hard winter here this year and I am ready for color, tired of brown and white...you will get back into it, it may take you a couple of days or even a couple of months but you will make it back in if you truly love sewing...and if not that is o.k. too....I send you a great big bear (((HUG))) and a smile too 8-) and know you are not alone we are all here for you when you are in need of inspiration, a hug or a smile...take care...and I will ask Mother nature for some nice sunny weather for us... Kelley ☺ |
I am sending you your mojo back to you....my other half also made me feel like I was doing nothing but collecting fabric, they just do not understand...
this was for charity crafter |

I'm in one of those myself right now. Just can't seem to get my lazy butt into the basement and finish something. However, I have had the cross stitching bug and finished quite a few things this past month.
I need 3 charm totes done in 3 weeks so I better get my head out of my you know where soon. We all need a break now and again, plus my basement is really cold right now. |
David, I do not want to work on the quilt at the dinning room table but I do want to start a new project.
I make myself do 3 things everyday. Today - the dentist. Lowes - shutters and now the kittens are napping so I am going to nap. That's three . Quilter68 who will soon be 70 |
I know how you feel. The longer days of sunlight are more than welcome!
