I feel your pain. You've shared your experience, and given us all some very useful information about receiving/inspecting/and REFUSING a baaaaad deal. Thank you.
In the past few years, I've had both UPS and a USPS delivery arrive with truck tire treadmarks over the smashed box; and one tall full-spectrum floor lamp arrived bent into an angle.

grann of 6 07-14-2011 04:25 AM

Oh, my, I'm so sorry that happened to you. I got my long arm in April. I bought a floor model HV Mega Quilter 18/8 and they ordered a new Grace frame. When I got it all home, unpacked all the frame parts and organized & checked off all the parts which took an hour & a half, I found no screws. Had to call the Grace company. The comment I got from the girl on the phone was "Oh, I wonder how that happened." No I'm sorry. Where is quality control these days. So 3 days later the screws arrive and I got it set up. But it is so frustrating to have it sitting there in pieces and not able to assemble. Hopefully you will get it all soon and with no damage, and life will be wonderful for you.

chrisqlt 07-14-2011 05:08 AM

I hope they won't use the same shipping company again! I'm sure they will try to expedite a better experience for you as they will want you to be happy with their product.

Wishing you a Tin Lizzie on your front porch in no time!

purrfectquilts 07-14-2011 05:09 AM

I'm glad you didn't sign or accept delivery and hope this all gets worked out for you.

I am still waiting (several months) for reimbursement for a machine I ordered that came with a cracked case. (not well enough packed) There was no damage to the box so I didn't know until it had been brought in and opened. (UPS)

Just because something is guaranteed doesn't mean a thing anymore too often.

Lucy90 07-14-2011 05:32 AM

You were so smart to refuse the shipment and calling. So many people would be intimidated by the driver. Good job!

My time 07-14-2011 05:32 AM

Good for you to have the presence of mind to refuse the shipment. Keep positive. Everything will work out in the end.

My time 07-14-2011 05:33 AM

Love your avatar by the way. Did you make this quilt?

Sandra-P 07-14-2011 05:39 AM

Yikes! Hope all turns out ok when you get the next shipment.

carslo 07-14-2011 05:42 AM

Good for you! I refused shipment once on a curio cabinet that I scoured the internet for, when it arrived there was a huge tear in the box, I made the driver undo the package and I saw that a door was off and the glass was cracked. I sent it right back. I had no trouble with my refund.
Sometimes it is hard to believe that something can come so beat up.
I wish you happy sewing adventires when your machine arrives intact!

I guess I'm a very literal person because when they said, "it takes a week to be delivered," I honestly expected it to be here in one week! Well, a little over two weeks later the shipper called and said it would delivered between 4pm and 5pm today! Yeah! I rushed home and waited and the semi truck pulled up and I could hardly contain my excitement! But then the trucker opened his mouth and said the box was here. What? Just one box? No, no, no, there should be three boxes! "No," he repeated, "just one box, I don't know why it says three, they only gave me one." So...he brought the one box to the door which just happened to be the machine head and my heart stopped, I froze, I couldn't breathe...NO...the box had been dropped! One corner completely ripped off, one corner smashed in, and one side smashed in AND the strapping tape was busted! I looked at the driver as he just stood there waiting for me to thank him! I said, "Who dropped this? It's been dropped!" He said, (like I was some idiot), "Well, this is all I have, I need for you to sign for it." "No...I don't think so! What if it's damaged?" The driver said, "I guess you could open it up and see if it's okay." I had my son carry it into the house, I started to slit the top seal (the only one not busted) and then my brain finally realized what was happening! I stopped and called the store and told the owner what was going on, she was upset. She said to refuse the shipment! So, I had my son carry it back out and told the driver I was refusing the shipment because only 1 of 3 boxes were delivered and the the one box, which had the machine head had clearly been dropped and I couldn't be sure the machine wasn't damaged! It cost way too much money to take a chance! So, he asked me to sign the delivery slip and I looked at him like he was crazy. So...I wrote, "Refused deliver, only one package delivered and it was busted." Oh....to come so close yet not get my machine! I'll probably have nightmares tonight! Talk about stressful! The owner of the store where I purchased the machine was calling Tin Lizzie the second we got off the phone to tell them what happened and to order me another machine. I called the transport company manager and told him I had refused the delivery and why. He said, "Oh...I might have your other boxes here at the warehouse, do you want me to send them on out, will you accept delivery then?" No...I politely told him because the machine head had been dropped hard enough to bust the seals and tear off parts of the box! I said you might as well plan on sending the shipment back because I won't accept it damaged. I politely told him that I didn't understand why they separated the shipment when it comes from Tin Lizzie on it's own skid, with all three boxes shrunk wrapped together to protect it! He said, "Hmmm, I'm not sure but it probably just came to us like that!"

Thank you for letting me vent! I think I'll go make a glass of cold iced tea and try to calm down! Oh...so close and yet so far...I was ready to sew the night away!

Vanessa in Oklahoma

Vanessa in OK., so sorry I would be so upset also, I have wanted one of the machines for years. Hope they FedEX it next time DHL used to be the most relieable one but they aren' t in busines here anymore. good luck with the new order..

BellaBoo 07-14-2011 06:00 AM

If you ordered it through a shop, why couldn't the shop owner have it shipped to the shop and then have it moved to your house, set it up and then you pay for it.

Doreen 07-14-2011 06:01 AM

Well, you were thinking right when you stopped opening it and refused delivery!
I would also put something stronger in that ice tea!

Val in IN 07-14-2011 06:24 AM

Thank goodness you did exactly the right thing. It sounds like you have a good, reliable dealer too. I'm sure the manufacturer is going to want to make this right for you and I'll bet they'll be collecting some insurance money from the shipping co. Unfortunately, YOU are the one this impacts the most. Enjoy your tea and know that you'll soon be happily quilting away.

MissDaisyDo 07-14-2011 06:32 AM

I just got my Tin Lizzie 2 weeks ago. Lucky for me, I got it directly from the dealer. He brought it to my house. and he and my husband put the 5ft. frame together and set it up with a practice quilt and spent close to 3 hours total at my house explaining things. It takes a little time getting use to using it. They are so much different than regular machines. I hope you get your soon. Know you will love it.

BarbaraSue 07-14-2011 06:33 AM

So sorry for your trouble. How disappointing! You were good to not let the heat of the moment cloud your thoughts and voice when you spoke to the driver and the shipping company and the store owner. By the time I had repeated the story twice my anger would have been involved too much for my own good.
Hope this has a happy ending for you soon.

Jo Mama 07-14-2011 06:37 AM

My Grace frame came with the wrong rails. Then my husband ruined the correct ones they sent so they sent them again -- free... I did not pay a dime for their and my mistakes.

Happy Linda 07-14-2011 06:38 AM

I'm glad that you refused it. What a mess. So sorry.

Feel your pain and disappointment, but you made the right choice...the hard choice! Good for you and you will be rewarded!!! handing you a tissue, chocolate and a lovely, tall, cool glass of amped-up tea

rivka 07-14-2011 07:38 AM

Oh, that's such a bummer -- but you definitely a machine that will work correctly. And trust me, you'll love your Tin Lizzie once you've got it :)

trolleystation 07-14-2011 07:41 AM

I think you should go for a glass of 'hard cider'.

hang in there - it'll arrive soon and intact!

My thought exactly.

Deborah12687 07-14-2011 07:49 AM

So sorry that this happened to you. The waiting is hard enough for the package to come and then find out the item gets broken!

JoanneS 07-14-2011 09:59 AM

You handled a difficult situation perfectly. I hope your Lizzie arrives in perfect condition soon!

A similar thing happened to me with Horn cabinets a few years ago. They arrive shrink wrapped, and the driver insisted he was not supposed to un-shrink wrap them. I refused to sign the delivery papers until everything was unwrapped and inspected. DH chatted with him while I removed the shrink wrap. Sure enough - a cabinet had a broken drawer that kept the rest of the drawers from opening - and the shrink wrap was all that was holding it together.

The driver called his dispatcher to find out what he should do - and I called Horn to find out what I should do. Both said we should make a detailed note on the delivery paper about the damage, & that I could keep the cabinet OR send it back with the driver. I kept it. Horn said they would immediately send a replacement cabinet - and they did a few days later.

DH repaired the broken cabinet to an almost-good-as-new state!

joyce888 07-14-2011 10:24 AM

Wow you acted fast. I don't know if I'd have thought to call the store immediately. Glad you refused to take delivery and refused giving your signature. I know there are times when the guy delivering may not be the one who loaded the truck but I would think he would make sure items weren't damaged before they were loaded.

Steady Stiching 07-14-2011 11:23 AM

Awe...what a disapointment!
Better safe than sorry!

This interesting - I have a Tin Lizzie have called and emailed and never got an answer - I'm really disappointed that they don't respond. Makes me wonder if they really stand behind their product. Fortunately my dealer will help me - but being able to contact them would be nice.

MargeD 07-14-2011 02:44 PM

I can't believe that the truck driver actually wanted you to sign for a box that was so obviously damaged. Duh. Maybe he fell off the truck with the box. Unbelievable. Good thinking to call both Tin Lizzie and the shipping company. So sorry you have to wait even longer, but taking one box out of three would not have done you any good. Good luck with your new - entire - shipment.

scrappy happy 07-14-2011 05:24 PM

you did the right thing by writing on the shipping orders that it was damage, and returning it. Glad you stood up for yourself.

KSue 07-14-2011 07:48 PM

I hope that same delivery company doesn't deliver the new one!

winter012 07-14-2011 09:48 PM

You definitely did the right thing by refusing the shipment. No reason to accept damaged goods!!!!

bonitagaye 07-14-2011 10:35 PM

You will LOVE it when it gets there!!!!!

kaykwilts 07-15-2011 03:56 AM

oh man..I got LAMenvy.....oh how I want one!! Hang in there..and do something just for you today.

jennron66 07-15-2011 07:02 AM

:( So sorry this happend to you--It's a shame that the delivery man tried to pull a fast one, but, how VERY smart of you to refuse delivery. I hope you will enjoying your new quilting machine. Keep us posted, and let us know how you like your quilting machine. I am interested in purchasing one myself. Good Luck and Have Fun

callie 07-15-2011 10:17 AM

What a mess - hang in there. Hope it is all you dreamed it would be when you finally get it up and running.

drgranny 07-15-2011 02:31 PM

That happened to me too! Only my machine was an Innova and was supposed to be pink. Fedx delivered it and it had been dropped and damaged bad. We refused the delivery and called the factory. They sent another one immediately only it wasn't pink. But what the heck. I found out later that I probably wouldn't have wanted the pink one even after repair. So I finally got my machine and love it!

ccrow99 07-17-2011 05:24 PM

I am so impressed by you!! You kept your cool and did all the right things. I'm so sorry for your disappointment. My iced tea would be laced with Vodka for sure.

pjnesler 07-20-2011 03:36 AM

Thanks for letting us know of your misfortune, and how you handled it, if ever I am in the same situation, I will now know how to handle it.

auntiehenno 07-24-2011 03:07 PM

I be sad for you. What a let down.
